  Bushveld Bliss Trail

  • Description: This trail starts at the guesthouse, traverses Marabeng, circles around Kirklington, and returns to the guesthouse.

  The Bushman Trail:

  • Distance: 20km
  • Description: This trail takes you from the guesthouse across the plains to Goewerneurskop, where you can admire ancient Bushman paintings. The trail ends at a refreshing swimming pool, and a vehicle is provided for the return trip.

  The Ts'ehlanyane National Park offers a diverse range of hiking trails for adventurers of all levels. From short, leisurely walks to challenging day hikes and multi-day treks, there's something for everyone.

• Hike Directions:

  The Litsumi Cave Trail in Tsehlanyane National Park offers a challenging 8.4km round trip hike, ascending from 1930m to 2520m above sea level. This trail starts at the park entrance, where you'll find parking near the ranger offices. Be sure to inform the rangers of your hiking plans before setting off.

  As you begin your journey, you'll pass the picnic site and enter a paddock where Basuto ponies graze. Follow the well-marked path that winds along the western side of the valley. This is the main trail to Bokong, but you'll turn off at the 3000m marker.

  Cross the river and follow a less defined path along the southern side of the valley. The trail climbs steadily for the first 600m, then crosses a stream and ascends a rocky patch. As the path fades, keep the rock waterfall in sight.

  Once you reach the waterfall, traverse the streambed for 60m. The Litsumi Cave, often home to porcupines, will be on your right, hidden behind dense vegetation. Enter with caution.

  This cave holds cultural significance for the local community, who have used it for centuries as a base for hunting activities.

  • Summit Crossroads: Reaching the summit, you'll find yourself at a crossroads. While the main path leads to remote villages, the circular route descends into a steep valley.
  • Ventilation Shaft: The trail takes you through a unique geological formation, the ventilation shaft, offering a glimpse into the mountain's interior.

  • Start at the junction: The Lower trail starts from the junction about 140m north of the lodge veranda, accessed off the gravel road leading to the nursery.  
  • Follow the marked path: The trail is a clearly marked path with markers showing the distance covered in meters.
  • Descend gently: The start of the trail at the lodge is at 2030 meters above sea level. From here it descends gently to 1993m where you meet a t-junction.  
  • Turn left at the T-junction: Turn left and follow the river in a northeasterly direction.
  • Enjoy the riverine forest: This path passes through the riverine forest, allowing for a shady walk with numerous birds twittering away.
  • Reach Black Pool: The path leads to the "Lets'a-Lets'o," or Black Lake, which is at 2080 meters above sea level. This is a good place to enjoy a snack and liquid refreshment.

• Hike Directions:

  Day 1: Arrival and Desert Introduction

  • Arrive at the Tok Tokkie Trails base by 2:00 PM and be greeted by our friendly team with refreshing drinks.
  • Replenish your water bottle and pack a small daypack for essentials you'll carry on the initial hike. Your luggage will be transported to the overnight camp by vehicle.
  • Visit the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) to learn about responsible desert conservation (www.nadeet.org).
  • Take a scenic drive to the starting point of the Tok Tokkie Trail.
  • Embark on your first hike, exploring a slope dotted with mysterious "fairy circles" and rolling sand dunes. These dunes offer unique beauty compared to the towering ones at Sossusvlei.
  • Arrive at the first overnight camp, a beautiful spot to relax and soak in the desert scenery. Enjoy a sundowner (drinks at sunset) before a delicious dinner.
  • As night falls, experience the magic of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, one of the world's International Dark Sky Reserves, with a clear and moonless sky offering incredible stargazing.
  • Tonight's unique sleep awaits: Enjoy the desert air on comfortable stretcher beds under the vast starry sky. (Walking time: 1-2 hours)

  Day 2: Unveiling the Desert's Secrets

  • Start your day with a pre-sunrise cup of tea or coffee followed by a light breakfast to fuel your morning exploration.
  • Set off in the cool morning air, perfect for hiking. Witness breathtaking views of dunes and plains as your guide helps you discover the wonders of the Namib Desert – smell, feel, taste, and see the wonders of this ancient landscape.
  • Learn to "read" the desert's "morning news" written in the sand. With your guide's expertise, you might spot fascinating desert creatures like the golden mole, dancing white lady spider, barking gecko, dune lark, and even a flightless wasp.
  • Hike over a mountain saddle before gently descending to a dry riverbed. Throughout the day, your guide will unveil the desert's secrets – how plants survive, how insects and reptiles adapt, and how amazing mammals thrive without readily available water.
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our chefs at a shady spot, perfect for relaxation and reflection on what you've seen.
  • As the afternoon heat subsides, embark on another hike, climbing over dunes towards your second overnight camp. The vista offers a breathtaking panorama of endless dunes, fairy circles, and majestic mountains – a photographer's paradise!
  • Witness the ever-changing play of colors on the dunes as shadows lengthen before sunset.
  • Wind down with a sundowner and a well-deserved dinner after a long but rewarding day. Listen to the nocturnal desert sounds – perhaps barking geckos, owls, or maybe just the peaceful silence. (Walking time: Morning: 4-4.5 hours / Afternoon: 2-2.5 hours.
  • Tonight's sleep: comfortable stretcher beds under the stars.)

  Day 3: Farewell to the Desert

  • Wake up again to the soft light of dawn and enjoy breakfast before setting off on your final desert adventure.
  • Hike through a field of rolling dunes dotted with camel thorn trees, offering welcome shade along the way.
  • Today's route is on the easier side, and you'll arrive back at Tok Tokkie farmhouse by approximately 11:30 AM. (Walking time: Morning: 3-3.5 hours)

  Your Etendeka adventure begins at Palmwag Lodge, where you'll meet your experienced guide and fellow hikers.   Day 2: Ascending to Hill Camp

  Sossusvlei

  • A Salt Pan: Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by towering sand dunes. It's the endpoint of the Tsauchab River, which rarely flows, bringing water to the pan only after heavy rains.
  • Towering Dunes: The area is famous for its massive sand dunes, some of the highest in the world. Big Daddy, at 325 meters, is one of the most prominent.
  • Otherworldly Beauty: The stark, red sand dunes contrasting with the white salt pan create a surreal and breathtaking landscape.

  Deadvlei

  • A Dried-Up Lake: Deadvlei is a clay pan located near Sossusvlei. It was once a wetland, but as the climate changed, sand dunes blocked the river, leaving the pan dry.
  • Dead Trees: The pan is dotted with the skeletal remains of ancient camel thorn trees. These trees died centuries ago but haven't decomposed due to the extremely dry climate.

  Start at the Deadvlei Parking Area and follow the ridge that leads up to the top of the dune. There is no marked trail, but the path is generally easy to follow.
