About The Lower Trail to Black Pool, Maliba Lodge

The Maliba Lower Trail to Black Pool is a serene 3.1km (1.9-mile) walk that takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete. This gentle route follows the Hlotse River, making it accessible for hikers of all ages and fitness levels.

As you embark on your journey, the trail descends gradually to 1993 meters, where you'll encounter a T-junction. Turning left, you'll follow the river's course in a northeasterly direction. This path meanders through a lush riverine forest, offering a shady and tranquil walk. Keep an eye out for a variety of bird species and the tracks of bushbuck and duiker.

The highlight of this trail is the picturesque Black Pool, located at an elevation of 2080 meters above sea level. This serene spot is perfect for a leisurely picnic or simply to soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Hike Directions

The Lower Trail to Black Pool at Maliba Lodge is a gentle 3.1km walk that takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to complete. This route follows the Hlotse River and is almost the same distance as the Upper route but has fewer climbs, making it enjoyable for all age groups.

Here are the hiking directions:

Start at the junction: The Lower trail starts from the junction about 140m north of the lodge veranda, accessed off the gravel road leading to the nursery.
Follow the marked path: The trail is a clearly marked path with markers showing the distance covered in meters.
Descend gently: The start of the trail at the lodge is at 2030 meters above sea level. From here it descends gently to 1993m where you meet a t-junction.
Turn left at the T-junction: Turn left and follow the river in a northeasterly direction.
Enjoy the riverine forest: This path passes through the riverine forest, allowing for a shady walk with numerous birds twittering away.
Reach Black Pool: The path leads to the "Lets'a-Lets'o," or Black Lake, which is at 2080 meters above sea level. This is a good place to enjoy a snack and liquid refreshment.
