  • Hike Address:

Trail operator: Manukuza Safaris Trail area: Balule Nature Reserve, Greater Kruger, Limpopo Meeting and access: Confirm the current meeting point, access procedure, dates and trail location directly with the operator before travel.

  • About the area:

Balule Nature Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger conservation landscape. The trail explores wild bushveld rather than a prescribed scenic path, giving attention to tracks, plants, smaller animals and the wider ecological signs that are easy to miss from a vehicle.

  • Hike Directions:

After the meeting and safety briefing, the group is transported to the trailhead and walks to the first night's temporary camp. The middle days begin early, include a longer morning walking period, a heat-of-day rest, and a further afternoon walk to the next overnight site.

On the final morning the group breaks camp and walks back towards the vehicles. Exact departure times, routes, distances and campsites are deliberately flexible. The guides adapt the journey to wildlife movements, safe conditions and the terrain.

    What to expect

Hikers sleep outdoors or in basic temporary shelter, prepare their own food on compact stoves and take part in the practical routines of a primitive camp. There are no permanent ablutions, power points or dependable mobile signal on the trail.

Bring already-broken-in hiking footwear, neutral clothing, sun and rain protection, warm layers for cool evenings, a robust backpack with hip support, sufficient water capacity, headlamp, sleeping bag and mattress. Confirm the current mandatory gear list and water arrangements directly with the operator before departure.

This is suited to walkers who are comfortable carrying a loaded pack over rough, uneven bush terrain for long days. It is not appropriate to walk independently: stay with the guides, follow all safety instruction immediately and respect the rules for a big-game environment.

  • Hike Address:

Trail area: Bermanzi / Mount Komati escarpment, near Machadodorp, Mpumalanga

Bookings, current access and safe-crossing confirmation: Contact the trail operator before travelling.

  • About the area:

The Bermanzi–Mount Komati landscape lies in the Mpumalanga highlands near Machadodorp. It combines valleys and watercourses with indigenous forest, cliff edges and distinctive sandstone formations, offering a compact but rugged escarpment experience.

  • Hike Directions:

Confirm the current booking, start point, trail map and official route markings with the operator before travelling. The source route describes two directions:

    • Bermanzi to Aloe Kaya: Descend from the Bermanzi side through forest towards the Bank Spruit, then climb through the sandstone landscape to Aloe Kaya. The published distance is about 10.5 km.
    • Aloe Kaya to Bermanzi: Start near Aloe Kaya, follow the escarpment with views over the Skoonspruit and Komati valleys, pass the waterfall area and continue via the river and forest back to Bermanzi. The published distance is about 10 km.

The page refers to numbered poles, painted footmarks and Oom Paul direction signs. These are useful only as on-the-ground markers; hikers should use the current operator-issued navigation information rather than relying on historic pole numbers or an old online track.

    Important access and safety note

The published description reports a damaged bridge near the Bank Spruit and a potentially hazardous river crossing, especially when the spruit is in flood. Do not use a damaged bridge or attempt a flooded crossing. Confirm the current safe crossing arrangement and whether the route is open with the operator before departure. If the crossing cannot be made safely, turn back or follow the operator's alternative instruction.

    What to expect

Expect steep ground, rocky sections, forest shade, river scenery, sandstone formations and changing mountain weather. Wear proper hiking footwear and carry water, food, weather protection, a headlamp and a basic first-aid kit. Keep to the marked trail, avoid disturbing the natural and heritage landscape, and travel with a group whose fitness suits the route.

Trail area: Queens River area, between Badplaas and Barberton, Mpumalanga

Bookings, access pin and current road information: Confirm directly with the trail operator before travel.

  • About the area:

The Queens River landscape lies in the Mpumalanga escarpment country between Badplaas and Barberton. Watercourses, forest and steep slopes provide a more secluded hiking setting, with lookout points across the surrounding reserve and valley.

  • Hike Directions:

Confirm the current access pin, route map, trail status and road conditions with the operator before travelling. The source notes that the entry road changes with conditions and can become slippery in wet weather.

    • Farm Trail: 3.6 km return, with a modest 22 m rise; a useful approach or easy walk to Matumi Bush Camp.
    • Cupid Trail: 8.6 km, moderate, with steady climbing and approximately 218 m of ascent.
    • Matumi Trail: 10 km, challenging, following the Queens River landscape towards Cupid Falls; approximately 241 m of ascent.
    • OuKraal Trail: 9.6 km, with a steep 433 m climb and panoramic views over the Queens Nature Reserve and Cupid Falls.

The three longer routes make a natural multi-day visit, but each should be selected according to the group's fitness and current conditions.

    What to expect

Expect forest and river scenery, waterfall viewpoints, dirt-road sections and steep ascents on the longer hikes. Carry water, sun protection, a rain layer, a basic first-aid kit and footwear suited to uneven ground. Cell signal is limited, so do not rely on a phone as the only form of navigation or emergency plan.

The trails cross a plantation setting where fire restrictions apply. Follow the current land-management rules and never light fires outside designated areas.

Trail area: Approximately 20 km north-east of Carolina, Mpumalanga

Bookings and current route information: Confirm directly with the trail operator before travel.

  • About the area:

The reserve lies about 20 km north-east of Carolina in the Mpumalanga highlands. Its watercourses, weathered sandstone and grassland ridges create a compact landscape with a remarkable concentration of natural features and cultural history.

  • Hike Directions:

Both overnight camps can be reached by vehicle, and the two main 10 km sections can be walked in either direction. Confirm the current map, camp sequence, trail conditions and booking arrangements with the operator before travel.

    1. Rooikrans to Oom Japie — about 10 km: The route moves through large rock formations to the Grootkloof cliff line and Mooifontein Waterfall, then crosses grassland before descending through waterfall-filled kloofs and climbing via Suikerbosrand towards Oom Japie.
    2. Oom Japie to Rooikrans — about 10 km: Descend through grassland to Geelhoutkrans and yellowwood shade, then climb to the plateau before returning through valley and stream sections, past ruins and distinctive sandstone features, to Rooikrans.

Shorter day routes can be added to create a three-day stay. The source describes options of roughly 8 km, 4.5 km, 3 km and 2.5 km; obtain the current names and marking details from the operator before publishing those as separate itinerary options.

    Heritage and safety

The route passes heritage sites, including San rock art and older ruins. Respect these places: do not touch, climb on, mark or remove anything from rock art or archaeological features. Some cliff-edge and ladder sections are exposed, and the source specifically flags a hazardous section near Grootkloof. Take your time, follow current operator guidance and do not proceed in unsafe weather or on a route that has been closed.

    What to expect

This is a self-catering hiking trail, but the listing should stay focused on the outdoor experience rather than accommodation marketing. Hikers need their own sleeping gear, food, water capacity, lighting, weather protection and first-aid supplies. Streams may offer water along the route, but treat or confirm water safety rather than assuming any source is potable.

Bring sturdy footwear and be prepared for variable weather. Winter fire risk and wet-weather conditions can affect a visit, so check trail status before setting out.

Bookings and current route information: Confirm directly with the trail operator or managing authority before travel.

  • About the area:

The Uitsoek forest lies in the escarpment country west of Mbombela, near Sudwala Caves. The trail moves between pine plantations, moist indigenous forest and open sourveld, creating sharp contrasts between shaded gorge walking and elevated plateau terrain.

  • Hike Directions:

    Hike directions

Confirm current forestry access, the map, hut availability and route conditions with the managing authority before travel.

    • Bakkrans Day Route: 11 km, moderately difficult. Crosses pine plantation and indigenous scrub forest in the gorges, passing Bakkrans Waterfall and tributaries of the Houtbosloop.
    • Beestekraalspruit Day Route: 11 km, moderately difficult. Climbs to the Beestekraalspruit cliffs, descends into riverine forest and follows the stream for about 4 km, using wooden bridges for multiple crossings.
    • Houtbosloop two-day route: 28 km, very difficult. Day one covers 14.5 km from Uitsoek to Lisabon Hut; day two returns 13.5 km through the Houtbosloop Valley to Uitsoek.

    What to expect

The Houtbosloop route is a serious mountain hike with long days and variable terrain. Carry adequate water, food, warm and waterproof layers, lighting and first-aid supplies. Wear footwear suited to wet roots, rocky tracks and repeated stream crossings.

Forestry roads and trails can change with operations or weather, so the current official map and local trail advice take priority over old online directions.

Trail departure and return: Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp, Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga Trail operator: SANParks wilderness trails Current information: Confirm present schedules, permits, entrance arrangements and trail logistics with SANParks or the operator via the source link before travel.

  • About the area:

The Wolhuter trail area combines granite formations, valleys and bushveld around the south-western part of Kruger National Park. This creates a different walking experience from the flatter savannah areas: more varied ground, broad rock features and long views across the landscape.

  • Hike Directions:

Hikers meet at Berg-en-Dal, where the ranger team takes the group to the wilderness camp. The two walking days normally begin early, with a longer guided morning walk, a rest during the heat of the day and a shorter afternoon outing. The camp remains the base for the duration of the trail, so hikers need only carry a daypack while walking.

Route choice and daily distance vary; the rangers set the pace and track according to the group, wildlife and weather. The final morning is for returning to Berg-en-Dal rather than a further full walk.

    What to expect

This is a guided big-game wilderness trail, not an independent hike. Participants must stay with the rangers, follow safety instructions immediately and respect the quiet character of the wilderness camp. Expect early starts, rugged natural ground, no ordinary electricity supply and limited connectivity.

Bring comfortable broken-in walking shoes, neutral-coloured clothing, sun and rain protection, a water bottle and a small daypack. Current packing requirements, park rules, availability and fitness screening must be confirmed directly with SANParks or the operator before travel.

    • Hels River Trail: Descend from Zip X reception to the Hels River and follow it for roughly 5.5 km to its meeting with the Olifants River. Expect extensive rock-hopping and shallow river pools; the optional two-day version uses a primitive riverside camp and returns by the same route.
    • Kranskloof Trail: Climb to the cliffs above the Hels River, descend by a steep scramble where fixed ropes may be present, then follow the river into the kloof. The 4.6 km route climbs through steep rocky terrain past an old mine before returning to reception.

Do not treat historic online route descriptions as a substitute for current on-site instructions.

    Important safety note

The Hels River route crosses wet and rocky terrain and reaches unfenced wilderness beside the Olifants River. The source mentions potentially dangerous wildlife in the area. This route should be attempted only with current local safety advice, appropriate experience and a conservative plan. Never enter deep pools, approach wildlife or use river water without confirming it is safe.

    What to expect

Bring sturdy footwear with grip, water, food, sun and rain protection, a first-aid kit and dry-pack protection for electronics. Overnight hikers need their own sleeping gear and supplies. Be prepared for a full day of slow technical movement rather than judging the hike by distance alone.

  • Hike Address:

Meeting area: Askham / northern Kalahari, Northern Cape.

The exact starting lodge, transfer plan, route permissions, departure dates and booking contact must be confirmed directly with the operator.

  • About the area:

The northern Kalahari is defined by wind-shaped red sand, broad pans and huge skies. Walking here is about slow travel through a landscape that can look simple from afar but is full of tracks, small-scale life and changing light. Respect private-land permissions and protected-area rules; the route crosses a mix of reserves and privately managed terrain.

  • Hike Directions:

Arrival is at the starting lodge near Askham, after which the group moves between the walking areas of the Kalahari Red Dune Route.

The full programme comprises five short-to-medium walks. The source lists stages of 14 km, 15 km, 8 km, 10 km and 5 km. These include a salt-pan and game-reserve walk, a route through the black koppies of the Lost City, a dune-top hike at Dreghorn, and a final guided walk on the Kalahari trails before the group continues toward the Kgalagadi area.

Daily routes and their order can change with weather, land access, wildlife movements and operator logistics. This page should therefore describe the traverse rather than present a fixed navigation track; confirm the current itinerary directly with the operator.

    What to expect

There is little ascent, but soft sand, long exposed stretches and very high temperatures can make the walking more demanding than the distances suggest. Participants should be capable of covering a 15 km day without a shorter fallback option.

Expect open Kalahari scenery: red dunes, salt pans, acacia woodland, dry drainage lines and distant koppies. Some itinerary elements are separate guided activities rather than hiking, including wildlife or game-drive experiences. Keep food secured and follow guide instructions in areas where game may be present.

Carry sun protection, plenty of water, a broad-brimmed hat, breathable layers, sturdy walking shoes, warm clothing for cool evenings and a small day pack. Conditions and hydration requirements should be checked before departure.

    Accommodation

The route is lodge-based rather than camp-based. The group changes venues through the trip, with accommodation in the Kalahari/Red Dune Route area. Room allocations, meals, transfers and any park access arrangements are operator matters and must be reconfirmed at booking.

  • Hike Address:

Start/finish: De Hoop, Richtersveld National Park, Northern Cape.

Current meeting instructions, permits, group size, departure dates and booking contact must be confirmed directly with the operator.

  • About the area:

The Richtersveld is renowned for dramatic granite outcrops, desert-adapted plants and vast mountain-and-river views. Its apparent openness should not be mistaken for easy terrain: navigation, heat management and group discipline matter here. This is a guided itinerary inside a sensitive protected landscape, so stay with the group, leave no trace and follow all park and guide instructions.

  • Hike Directions:

The group meets at De Hoop, where vehicles remain for the route. The first night is spent beside the Orange River.

The first walking day follows the river for roughly 12 km before turning south and gaining about 300 m over the remaining 9 km to a bush camp near the Tattasberg viewpoint. The route passes an old diamond-prospecting trench and reaches a granite-boulder campsite with broad views.

The following day is shorter in distance but slower underfoot. The route crosses boulders and an open kloof, with an optional high point on Tattasberg where conditions permit, before descending through quiver-tree country to Kokerboomkloof. Allow a full day for the 12 km stage.

Day four continues through a largely trackless kloof before joining jeep track to Richtersberg Camp. The direct return to De Hoop is about 10 km, while the longer option explores the Abiekwa river section before returning to the Orange River and following it back to camp. The final morning is for departure.

    What to expect

Expect a very dry, open landscape with strong sun, temperature swings and little shade. The itinerary includes a mix of jeep tracks, river corridors, loose rock and boulder scrambling; water crossings and slippery surfaces may be encountered after rain or in riverbed sections.

Bring suitable trail footwear, sun protection, warm layers for evening, a headlamp, personal eating gear, adequate drinking water capacity and your own tent and bedding. Confirm the current packing list, water arrangements, route variation and safety requirements with the operator before booking.

    Camps

The route starts and ends at De Hoop beside the Orange River. Intermediate camps are simple, with the group’s tents and shared equipment transported ahead. Facilities vary by camp: the source notes basic washing arrangements at bush camps and more conventional toilets and cold showers at some established stops.

  • Hike Address:

    Start area: Vosburg, Northern Cape.

The precise meeting point, current departure dates, route sequence, farm access and booking contact must be confirmed directly with the organiser.

  • About the area:

Vosburg sits in the Bo-Karoo, where farming history and big, dry landscapes shape the experience. The Camino’s strength is access to land that is not open as a public through-route. Respect the hosts, livestock, gates and private-property rules that make this continuous walking journey possible.

  • Hike Directions:

Arrive in the Vosburg area on Sunday afternoon. Walking takes place from Monday to Friday, generally covering 20–25 km a day.

The Camino moves between working farms and Vosburg, following approved farm roads and tracks through the surrounding Karoo. There are no substantial climbs described by the source, but the daily distance, rougher farm surfaces, heat and weather exposure require good walking fitness.

Because the route crosses private land, hikers must join an arranged departure and follow the organiser’s current route, gate and access instructions. It is not a self-guided or self-carry camping trail.

    What to expect

Expect an unhurried long walk through classic semi-arid Karoo country: large skies, open grass and scrub, distant ridges, sheep-farming landscapes and long, quiet roads. The challenge is consistency over five days rather than steep ascents.

Carry a comfortable day pack, sufficient water, sun protection, walking shoes already tested over long distances, layers for changing Karoo conditions and any personal medication. The organiser provides the detailed daily itinerary shortly before the trip; check it for current terrain, water and weather guidance.

    Accommodation

The supported itinerary uses a mix of working farm stays and accommodation in or near Vosburg. Overnight locations can vary between departures, and luggage is transferred between them. Treat accommodation details as itinerary logistics, not as a separate accommodation listing.

  • Hike Address:

Trail area: Blombos, Jongensfontein and Stilbaai, Western Cape

Start and meeting details: Confirm with the current Alikreukel Trail operator when booking, as the full route is guided and involves transfers.

Bookings and current information: Alikreukel Trail or the current authorised booking provider.

  • About the area:

The Stilbaai coast has an exceptional blend of geology, shore ecology and human history. Rock pools and the intertidal zone invite close observation, while the broader shoreline offers opportunities to see marine wildlife from a respectful distance. The limestone-rich coastal formations and semi-petrified dunes reveal a long history of wind, sand and sea-level change.

Blombos Cave and the ancient fish traps around Stilbaai are important archaeological and cultural sites. Access, interpretation and any cave-related activity should remain subject to the relevant managers and guides.

  • Hike Directions:

The full route covers three hiking days and one mixed walking-and-kayaking day.

Day 1 — Blombos to Jongensfontein: About 13.5 km. This is the hardest day, with loose sand and some rough, rocky terrain. The route passes the Blombos coastal landscape, shell middens, the Blombos rock arch and several sea-viewing points before reaching Jongensfontein.

Day 2 — Jongensfontein to Stilbaai: About 12 km of easy-to-moderate walking. The route follows the coastline past Jongensgat arch and Noordkapper Point, then continues via the fish traps and milkwood forest of the Skulpiesbaai area towards Stilbaai.

Day 3 — Goukou River and Stilbaai: Around 5 km on foot and 4 km by kayak. This easier day includes a walk around Stilbaai and the river mouth, a museum stop linked to Blombos Cave interpretation, and a guided paddle on the Goukou River. The exact supporting visits and transfers should be confirmed with the operator.

Day 4 — Preekstoel to Geelkrans: About 12 km, with an optional extension to roughly 16 km. This is a there-and-back beach walk across the eastern side of Stilbaai, where aeolianite cliffs, ancient dune formations and a remote stretch of coast form the final stage.

    What to expect

This is a coastal trail, so weather can change quickly. Pack a comfortable day pack, water container, windproof and waterproof layers, sun protection, personal medication and footwear that handles sand, uneven rocks and beach walking. The operator normally supplies logistical support on guided departures, but inclusions and route variations can change.

The first day needs realistic preparation: it is longer and involves loose sand and rougher ground than the later stages. Heritage features, including middens and fish traps, are sensitive. Enjoy them with a guide and leave every shell, stone and cultural object in place.

    Accommodation and trail support

The standard guided format uses comfortable shared holiday-house-style accommodation, with meals and bedding arranged as part of the departure. This support is useful context for a slackpacking route, but it should not become a separate accommodation listing on SA Hikes.

Shorter two- and three-day options may be offered on selected departures. Treat those as booking variations, not separate trail entries, unless the live operator publishes a substantially different permanent route.

Trail access: Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve / Die Galg near McGregor, or the Greyton side of the route, Western Cape

Current permits and route information: CapeNature — Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve. Confirm current access, permits, closures, water conditions, route direction and transport arrangements before travelling.

  • About the area:

The Riviersonderend Mountains form part of a vital mountain-catchment landscape. Mountain fynbos, proteas, ericas, restios and riverine vegetation support a rich variety of birds and small mammals. Wildlife is best experienced quietly and at a distance.

The conservation area includes state and private land. Stay on the authorised route, leave no litter, do not make fires and do not remove plants, rocks or other natural material.

  • Hike Directions:

McGregor / Die Galg to Greyton — about 14 km: From the McGregor side, start near Die Galg south of town and cross the mountains towards Greyton. The route passes watercourses, mountain fynbos and the Oakes Falls pools. Organise transport before committing to the one-way traverse.

Greyton to McGregor / Die Galg — about 14 km: From the Greyton side, the first section follows a jeep track uphill towards the viewpoint before the trail enters the mountain route. The walk can be done in either direction; choose the direction and logistics to suit the group and current conditions.

Two-day out-and-back — about 28 km: Walk to a safe turnaround or arrange an overnight at one end, then return on the same route the next day. Do not camp on the trail itself unless the responsible authority has explicitly authorised it.

    What to expect

This is a reasonably strenuous mountain hike. In summer, heat and dry conditions are significant; in winter, rain, cold and high-water crossings can make the route hazardous. Carry adequate water, food, sun protection, warm and waterproof layers, navigation, a first-aid kit and a charged phone. Do not hike alone.

Oakes Falls and the pools are places to pause rather than an invitation to take risks. Avoid slippery rock, fast water and cliff edges, and never rely on stream water without current local advice and suitable treatment.

    Permits and trail support

A valid permit is required. Book ahead and carry the permit on the trail. Group limits, dog restrictions, fire rules, access arrangements and trail status must be confirmed with CapeNature at the time of booking.

The nearby Die Galg accommodation is a practical start/end option only. It should not be imported as a separate hiking article unless its own defined route network is later assessed as a candidate.

Start and finish: Cape of Good Hope main gate, Table Mountain National Park, Western Cape

Permits and current trail information: Book and confirm through SANParks — Table Mountain National Park. Confirm the required permit or register process, access times, hut allocation, water, fire rules, current route closures and emergency procedures before travel.

  • About the area:

The Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park protects a remarkably species-rich part of the Cape Floral Region. Fynbos, restios, dunes and freshwater vleis share the landscape with a dramatic coastline, producing scenery that changes continually over the two days.

The area carries deep layers of human history, from archaeological evidence in shell middens to early settlement, maritime activity and Second World War structures. These places are not outdoor museums to be handled; enjoy them from the trail and follow all access restrictions.

  • Hike Directions:

The route is marked with yellow footprints and poles. Always use the current SANParks map and briefing material, as route management, detours and water availability can change.

Day 1 — approximately 13 km / allow about 6 hours: Start from the main gate and pass the Smitswinkel Bay viewpoint. The trail works around the base of Paulsberg to Kanonkop, then continues via the Buffelsfontein Visitor Centre and the higher ground around Rooikrans. From the Rooikrans parking area, follow the marked path to the overnight huts. A Cape Point return detour is possible only for hikers with sufficient daylight, energy and favourable conditions.

Day 2 — approximately 20.5 km / allow up to 10 hours: Leave the huts early and descend to Pegram's Point. The route follows the coast towards Platboom, then continues past Gifkommetjie and Hoek van Bobbejaan before turning inland through the permit-controlled Blaaubergvlei section. From Sirkelsvlei, cross the central plain and climb Rooihoogte before descending to the main gate.

    What to expect

The terrain ranges from firm paths to sand, fynbos tracks, rocky slopes and coastal sections. Pack for sun, wind, rain and cooler evening conditions, and carry enough food, water, a torch, personal first-aid supplies and reliable navigation. Refilling points and hut facilities must be confirmed before departure rather than assumed.

Baboons occur in the park. Keep food secure, give all wildlife space and never feed animals. Snakes are also part of the fynbos environment; stay on the route, remain observant and do not interfere with them. The trail crosses sensitive vegetation and heritage landscapes, so take out all litter and leave plants, shells and artefacts untouched.

    Camps

Overnight accommodation is in the park's hiking huts, which provide basic sleeping and cooking facilities. Hikers need to bring their own sleeping gear and personal supplies. The available huts, keys, baggage-transfer options and booking conditions are controlled by the park and can change; confirm them directly with SANParks before planning the trip.

No private vehicle access is permitted to the overnight huts. If a bag-transfer service is required, arrange it only through the current authorised park process.

Start: De Mond Nature Reserve Welcome Centre, Western Cape

Finish: Waenhuiskrans / Arniston, Western Cape

Bookings and current trail information: Confirm through CapeNature or the current Damara Trail booking provider before travelling. Ask specifically about access, transfers, campsite water, weather and tide-related conditions.

  • About the area:

De Mond protects the lower Heuningnes River mouth and a quiet stretch of the Overberg coast eastwards towards Waenhuiskrans. Its dune systems, milkwood thickets, beach and estuary habitat support a rich coastal birdlife. The reserve is also linked to a long human history, visible in the coastal archaeological landscape.

Waenhuiskrans Cave is a well-known local landmark near Arniston. Visit respectfully and follow reserve guidance wherever access is managed or conditions make the coast hazardous.

  • Hike Directions:

Begin at the De Mond Nature Reserve Welcome Centre, where trail users can arrange to leave a vehicle. Follow the signed route through dune forest and across stabilised dunes to the coastal campsite.

Day one is approximately 5.5 km and is generally an easy-to-moderate walk of about two hours. The camp lies in the coastal dunes, roughly 300 m from the sea.

On day two, continue for about 11 km towards Waenhuiskrans. Allow around four hours for this moderate section. The route follows the coast and beach, with time to appreciate the rock pools, seabirds and open shore before reaching the trail endpoint. Return transport to the De Mond start point is part of the trail arrangement; confirm the current collection plan, trail conditions and operating times when booking.

    What to expect

This is exposed coastal walking. Carry sufficient drinking water, sun protection, a charged phone and navigation material supplied for the trail. Start the longer second day early, allow for changing weather, and use footwear suitable for sand, uneven shore and wet ground.

The sea demands attention throughout. Keep well clear of rogue waves and rip currents, never turn your back on the water, and do not attempt to shorten the route through unsafe surf or tidal conditions.

    Camps

The overnight stop is a simple campsite in the dunes rather than a serviced lodge. Bring your own sleeping gear, food, toiletries, lighting, warm layers and personal first-aid supplies. Basic camping facilities are provided, but hikers should confirm the current water arrangements and what shared equipment, if any, is included before departure.

An optional second-night stay in Waenhuiskrans may be arranged separately. It is not required to complete the hike and should be treated as an onward-travel choice rather than part of the trail listing.

Trail area: Lekkerwater, Koppie Alleen, De Hoop Vlei and Potberg, De Hoop Nature Reserve, Western Cape

Current route and booking information: Confirm through De Hoop Collection before travelling. Verify current access, guided/self-guided permissions, accommodation bases, transport, weather guidance and any marine or wildlife restrictions.

  • About the area:

De Hoop contains some of the Overberg's finest coastal fynbos, dune and intertidal landscapes. The reserve's sheltered bays, tidal pools and wide beaches create a rich setting for marine observation, while De Hoop Vlei and Potberg bring a contrasting inland character of birdlife, plains and mountain slopes.

The seasonal presence of southern right whales is one of the coastal highlights, but De Hoop rewards walking throughout the year with dramatic seascapes, flowers, geology and the quiet scale of the reserve.

  • Hike Directions:

Days 1–2 — Lekkerwater: The itinerary can begin with an optional approximately 6 km walk from the Lekkerwater parking area through fynbos to the coastal base. Guided marine and nature walks, or self-guided exploration where permitted, make up the next day.

Day 3 — Lekkerwater to Koppie Alleen: The central walking day is about 15 km and usually takes six to nine hours with stops. It follows the coast along beaches, limestone platforms, gullies, pools, caves and cliffs towards the Koppie Alleen end of the Whale Trail. Transfer then connects hikers to the De Hoop Collection side of the reserve.

Day 4 — De Hoop Vlei and western reserve: A 5 km guided walk around the vlei leads towards Melkkamer, followed by a boat transfer and a further 7–8 km through cliff-edge, vlei-side and open fynbos terrain.

Day 5 — Flatrock and Potberg: A short guided Flatrock walk of about 4 km gives panoramic views over the vlei. The itinerary can also include a guided Potberg vulture-colony walk before the return transfer to the Lekkerwater parking area.

Follow only the live operator's current maps and instructions. Beach conditions, seasonal wildlife protection and logistics can alter the exact order or availability of walks.

    What to expect

Pack a small day pack, water bottle, wide-brimmed hat, sun protection, closed walking shoes, warm layers, simple first-aid supplies and binoculars. Reef shoes can be useful on coastal exploration but do not replace secure walking footwear. The long third day is exposed and requires enough water, careful pacing and awareness of the sea.

Rock pools, intertidal areas and coastal vegetation are sensitive. Do not climb on fragile formations, collect shells or disturb marine life. During whale season, observe from a distance; a wildlife encounter is never guaranteed.

    Accommodation and trail support

The source describes off-grid lodge and reserve accommodation, meals, baggage transfer and return transport as elements of the supported itinerary. These make the walk a slackpacking experience, but accommodation is not the subject of this SA Hikes article.

Because service details change, confirm the current bases, luggage arrangements, guided sections, vehicle transfers, inclusions and reserve access before booking. Do not rely on former fixed departure days or package details.

Trail area: De Hoop Nature Reserve, Western Cape

Start, route access and current bookings: Confirm with De Hoop Collection before travelling. Request the current itinerary, guide arrangements, reserve access, accommodation base, group requirements, transfers and safety instructions.

  • About the area:

De Hoop Nature Reserve protects a remarkable stretch of Overberg coast as well as inland vlei and fynbos habitats. It is known for coastal marine life, wide beaches, limestone and dune formations, bird-rich wetlands and the Potberg section of the reserve.

The trail's name reflects its contrasting environments: the quiet, bird-filled De Hoop Vlei and the whale-watching coast. The exact seasonality of marine wildlife varies, so see each visit as an opportunity for observation rather than a guarantee of sightings.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 — Flatrock to Tierhoek: Approximately 5.5–6.5 km. Meet the guide at the reserve, then walk down through fynbos at Flatrock to the Tierhoek area, where broad views open over the vlei. Transfer to the overnight base follows.

Day 2 — Melkkamer and Opstal: Approximately 15 km in total. Walk around 8 km to historic Melkkamer, then use a guided boat transfer across the vlei before a further walk of roughly 7 km through fynbos and plains around Opstal.

Day 3 — Koppie Alleen, Wyoming and Potberg: Approximately 9 km in total. A transfer reaches the marine-protected coast at Koppie Alleen. The coastal stage crosses dunes towards Wyoming along a section associated with the last part of the Whale Trail, followed by an inland Potberg walk to the vulture-viewing area.

Day 4 — Opstal to Tierhoek: Approximately 8 km. A final reserve walk is followed by transfer back to the entrance and hikers' vehicles.

All daily starts, transfers and route variants are managed by the guide and reserve operator. Follow the current briefing, particularly where tides, marine access, wildlife movements or management activities affect the day plan.

    What to expect

Bring a small day pack, water bottle, sun protection, warm and windproof layers, closed walking shoes, swimwear if desired, basic first aid and binoculars. Trail conditions include fynbos paths, dunes, open plains and coastal ground. The group moves between areas by road and boat, so this is not a continuous through-hike.

De Hoop's wildlife and coastal habitats are a major part of the experience. Keep a respectful distance from animals, never approach birds or nests, stay with the guide in sensitive areas and leave all plants, shells, rocks and heritage material where they are found.

    Accommodation and trail support

The walking itinerary uses a catered reserve-based stay, generally at De Mond Villa or Melkkamer Homestead. That accommodation supports the hiking experience but should not be listed as separate lodging in this SA Hikes article.

The source described meals, transfers and guiding as part of the package. These inclusions are time-sensitive and must be checked with the live operator before a booking is made.

McGregor sits in the Breede Valley, where vineyards meet renosterveld, fynbos and rugged mountain views. The surrounding landscape has agricultural, cultural and geological layers, giving the walk more variety than a simple vineyard stroll.

Spring and autumn can be especially pleasant hiking seasons, but conditions vary. Summer heat and winter rain both require sensible planning.

  • Hike Directions:

One-day Wine Walk — about 10 km: The short format begins in McGregor and follows a moderate guided route through the valley. It combines local landscape interpretation, fynbos and renosterveld with a stop at a wine farm. Confirm the actual route and meeting point for the selected departure.

Three-day Wine Walk — about 10–13 km per day: The multi-day format uses three different guided day routes. The first is a 10 or 13 km choice on rocky single track; the second is about 10 km with some sustained uphill walking; the third is an easier 10 km route. Published itineraries include wine farms and other local stops, but the exact businesses and sequence can vary.

Follow the guide's current route rather than relying on a past itinerary. Farm access, weather and local arrangements can change the practical daily line.

    What to expect

Expect warm, dry conditions for much of the year, uneven natural paths and occasional stream crossings. Pack comfortable hiking shoes with grip, a day pack, at least two litres of water capacity, a sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a rain layer, personal medication and snacks. A walking stick and binoculars are useful but optional.

The route may include geological interest, including fossils, but do not remove or disturb any fossils, plants or other natural material. Enjoy the landscape in place and respect every farm-access rule.

    Accommodation and trail support

The longer format is guided and supported from a local trail base, with transport used where necessary. Accommodation, meals and wine-related inclusions are logistical booking details and should not be copied into the hike listing as evergreen content.

Wine tasting is optional context for an adult hiking experience, not a safety substitute. Bring water for the hike, follow the guide's pace and make transport decisions responsibly.

Trailhead: Robberg Nature Reserve parking area, Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape

Current permits and reservations: CapeNature — Fountain Shack. Confirm booking availability, access route, weather restrictions, current hut inventory, gate procedures and reserve rules before travelling.

  • About the area:

Robberg is a protected coastal peninsula where rock platforms, beaches, cliffs and marine habitat meet. Its scenery is dramatic precisely because it is exposed to weather and sea, so careful, low-impact travel matters.

Stay on authorised paths, do not disturb plants or animals, and respect every marine-protected-area rule.

  • Hike Directions:

Parking area to Fountain Shack — about two hours: Follow the reserve's marked seal route from the car park along boardwalk, then turn at the Fountain Shack sign. The boardwalk gives way to rock rambling, a beach section of about 600 metres and a final climb to the shack.

Safer Witsand alternative: A route through Witsand takes longer but avoids some of the more exposed rock sections. Use the current reserve map and signs to decide; never take an unmarked shortcut across coastal rocks.

Return: Retrace the access route, or—where conditions, permits and fitness allow—continue on the Robberg Point circuit back to the car park. The circuit should be treated as a separate route decision, not assumed as an easy extension after an overnight stay.

Do not walk to the shack in rain, mist, darkness, strong wind or unsafe sea conditions. The rocks are uneven and can be slippery; sheer drops and fast-changing weather are real hazards.

    What to expect

Carry all personal equipment and enough drinking water. Essential items include footwear with grip, a torch, sleeping bag, warm and windproof layers, sun protection, first aid, food, insect repellent and any cooking supplies required by the current hut rules. Pack light enough to move safely over rock, but do not under-pack for exposure.

Swimming, snorkelling and diving are not automatically safe because of strong currents. Follow reserve advice, remain within your ability and never enter the sea merely because the water looks calm.

    Camps and trail support

Fountain Shack is the overnight destination. Its equipment, water, power, bedding, access hours and cleaning arrangements can change and must be confirmed directly with CapeNature when reserving. Take all waste out, use water sparingly and leave the hut secure and ready for the next hikers.

The reserve's current rules govern fires, fuel, fishing, alcohol, pets, gate hours and whether any portage help is available. Do not include old operational details in the final imported article.

Trail access: Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area, Western Cape

Current permits and route information: confirm directly with the responsible reserve authority before travelling. The source page is useful context, but current maps, access, hut availability, closures and weather advice must be obtained from the reserve.

  • About the area:

Groot Winterhoek protects a crucial mountain water-source landscape and Cape fynbos biodiversity. Rock pools, sandstone formations, river corridors and seasonal flowers are the visible rewards of its demanding terrain.

The area contains sensitive cultural heritage. Do not seek out, touch, photograph closely or publicise heritage locations. Follow all reserve guidance and treat the landscape as protected.

  • Hike Directions:

Parking area to De Tronk: Choose the 14 km jeep-track approach or the 13 km river route. The jeep track is generally the simpler option; the river line has more water but must not be used when crossings are unsafe.

Pool and Kliphuis walks: The network includes short routes to Protea Pool (about 1.5 km), Disa Pool (about 2.6 km), Crystal Pool (about 7.5 km) and Groot Kliphuis via the river (about 9.5 km). These are shorter in distance but are still wilderness walks requiring preparation.

Die Hel routes: From the parking area, Die Hel is about 18 km; from De Tronk, it is about 4 km. The descent into the gorge is steep and demanding. Turn back before the descent if conditions or confidence are not right.

Overnight combinations: Groot Kliphuis, Perdevlei, De Tronk and Die Hel can be linked into longer wilderness itineraries. The source names a 6 km Groot Kliphuis–Perdevlei route and a 12 km Perdevlei–De Tronk route, among other combinations. Plan only with the current reserve map and official advice.

Do not treat these route notes as a substitute for navigation. Check in, share your plan, carry an accurate map and tell reserve staff when you have completed the hike.

    What to expect

Winter can bring cold, heavy rain, mist, frost and even snow; streams and rivers may become dangerous. Summer can also turn cold or misty without warning. Carry appropriate map and navigation tools, enough food and water, a water-treatment method, warm and waterproof clothing, sun protection, first aid, shelter where needed and a reliable communication plan.

There is no shop in the reserve, and coverage is limited. Do not hike alone, do not rely on huts or rain tanks for water, and use the De Tronk jeep track or another reserve-approved alternative when high water closes a river route.

    Camps and huts

Basic hiker huts and wilderness overnight options support longer trips. They are remote, self-maintained facilities and should be left cleaner than they were found. Exact water, bedding, ablution and capacity information is not evergreen; confirm it directly when reserving.

No fires are permitted. Pack out every item, protect food from baboons and use established or authorised overnight areas only.

Trailhead: Harkerville Forestry Station area, Garden Route, Western Cape

Current route information and reservations: confirm directly with the responsible forestry or reserve authority before travelling. Fagala Voet source page may help identify the product, but published booking details and contact numbers should not be imported as evergreen trail content.

  • About the area:

Harkerville lies on an undeveloped stretch of the Garden Route coastline, where indigenous forest meets rocky headlands, fynbos and the Indian Ocean. It is close to busy towns yet feels markedly remote once the path reaches the coast.

The route is in a high-rainfall landscape. Rain, mist, slippery timber and swollen streams can change a familiar trail into a much more demanding outing.

  • Hike Directions:

Harkerville Hut to Sinclair Hut — about 11 km: Start through indigenous forest, then move onto the coast. This day includes stream crossings, cliff paths, chains, ladders, caves and ocean views before reaching Sinclair Hut. Allow more time than the distance suggests; the technical coastal terrain can make the day slow.

Sinclair Hut to Harkerville Hut — about 11 km: Leave Sinclair through fynbos with continued coastal views, then return through indigenous forest to the Harkerville parking area. A signed emergency escape route from behind Sinclair Hut leads towards Garden of Eden on the N2; it is for safety and should not be treated as an optional scenic shortcut.

The source contains older alternative daily distances in addition to the current 11 km-and-11 km outline. Check the reserve's current map and conditions before setting out.

    What to expect

This is not a suitable first overnight hike for someone uneasy with heights, chains, ladders or steep stairs. Wear reliable footwear with grip and pack weatherproof clothing, sufficient drinking water, food, a torch, personal medication and a first-aid kit. Rock pools and shoreline views reward unhurried walking, but never draw hikers too close to wave-washed edges.

The trail can close at short notice during fire danger, flooding, extreme seas or other safety events. Do not walk it in rough conditions. Freak waves can reach apparently safe-looking coastal rock; stay on marked routes and respect every closure, warning and guide or reserve instruction.

    Camps and trail support

The trail uses Harkerville Hut and Sinclair Hut. Harkerville is the more developed overnight point; Sinclair is simpler. Treat all hut facilities, water supply, bedding, firewood and electricity information as changeable and confirm them when reserving.

Hut water and seasonal streams should not be the sole basis of a hydration plan. Carry enough water for the route and use current reserve advice about whether any available water needs treatment.

Trail base: Hogsback, Eastern Cape Route information and bookings: 2-Day Zingcuka Loop / Fagala Voet

Confirm the chosen start and finish variation, route distance, current hut access, shuttle arrangements and weather conditions before travelling.

  • About the area:

Hogsback lies high in the Amatola Mountains, where forested gullies, grassland ridges and often-misty peaks create one of the Eastern Cape’s most atmospheric hiking settings. The Zingcuka Loop crosses the ecological boundary that makes the full Amatola Trail memorable: wet forest and streams below, open mountain country and expansive views above.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 – Hogsback to Zingcuka Hut (22 km)

After a shuttle to the start beyond the Madonna and Child Waterfall area, the trail climbs steeply beside a stream between Hog 1 and Hog 2. It then joins a section of the Amatola Trail, following watercourses past falls and swimming pools before traversing a cliff path with wide views. A steep descent leads into Schwarzwald Forest and Zingcuka Hut.

The stage gains approximately 1,041 m and is a serious full day. Begin early, carry enough water and do not rely on a quick pace through the rugged forest and mountain sections.

Day 2 – Zingcuka Hut to Hogsback (16 km)

The return day climbs behind Hog 1, contours around the peak and works down through high country towards Hogsback. The route again follows water and waterfalls on steep ground. Depending on the agreed exit, hikers either use the longer Amatola+ continuation through Auckland Nature Reserve—taking in Madonna and Child Waterfall and the Big Tree—or leave via Wolfridge Road.

Despite the shorter listed distance, the stage includes about 955 m of ascent and requires sure footing and good endurance.

    Huts, logistics and preparation

Zingcuka Hut is the overnight point. The normal logistics include a shuttle to the start and safe parking in Hogsback; pre- and post-hike accommodation or food arrangements should be confirmed directly with the operator rather than assumed from the trail description.

Some groups can arrange food or gear drops at overnight huts, but this is a support service rather than a reason to under-pack. Carry the water, food, warm waterproof layers, first aid and emergency essentials required for a self-reliant mountain day. Evacuation cover and extraction procedures should be checked before departure.

Start and finish: Witteklip Conference Centre, Zuurveldt, Eastern Baviaanskloof, near Kareedouw, Eastern Cape.

  • About the area:

The route lies in the transition between the Eastern and Western Cape flora regions, in the Kouga and Baviaanskloof Mountains. It passes fynbos, honeybush and rocky ravines where the near-threatened Baviaanskloof cedar occurs. This endemic tree survives in remote, steep sites and is vulnerable to fire and habitat disturbance.

  • Hike Directions:

    Day 1

    Distance: 15.5 km

The first day follows the historic mountain crossing towards the area where Antjie lived. It is the longest standard stage, so start with sufficient water and time for the climbs.

    Day 2

    Distance: 8.1 km

The route reaches the Boesman Cave area, where hikers can see Baviaanskloof cedar in its natural rocky-ravine habitat.

    Day 3

    Distance: 10.5 km

A moderate mountain stage linking the overnight areas through fynbos and farm country.

    Day 4

Distance: 11.5 km standard route; 21 km with the Kouga River viewpoint extension

The optional 9 km extension is for experienced hikers who want the longer day and the Kouga River viewpoint.

    Day 5

    Distance: 10.8 km

The final day returns to the Witteklip base area.

    Overnight huts and practical information

Waterval and Slagkamer are rustic overnight huts with a flushing outdoor toilet and hot shower. No lamps are supplied, so a headlamp or torch is essential; candles are not permitted because of the fire risk.

Water tanks supply each overnight site for drinking, cooking and washing. Small tanks are placed on parts of the route, and seasonal streams or springs may also be available. Carry a treatment method if you are uncertain about local water conditions.

Fires are only allowed in the designated fireplaces. Firewood is provided, but hikers must ensure every fire and coal is fully extinguished before leaving the area.

Mobile reception is limited to high ground and there is little vehicle access. Each group should carry a first-aid kit, survival bag and thermal blanket, remain together in adverse weather, and avoid leaving a person in an emergency alone. The route is mountain wilderness: prepare for heat, cold, wind, rain, snakes and other natural hazards.

  • Hike Directions:

    Day 1 — Southern foothills

    Distance: 16 km

The first stage leaves the interpretive centre for the foothills south-east of base camp. It crosses the same broad wilderness landscape as the Leopard Trail, with mountain views and changing vegetation.

Day 2 — Kouga Mountain country

    Distance: 16 km

The route continues through the southern section of the reserve. Expect an active day of climbing and descending rather than a flat 16-kilometre walk.

    Day 3 — Paradise Kloof

    Distance: 9 km

The shortest day enters Paradise Kloof, where narrow canyons, deep ravines and forest contrast with the more open mountain country of the first two days.

Day 4 — Northern Baviaans Mountains

    Distance: 17 km

The trail turns back towards the base area on the northern side of Baviaanskloof. Plateau sections give way to ridges and repeated descents into steep ravines.

Day 5 — Return to the interpretive centre

    Distance: 16 km

The final stage continues through the northern mountain landscape before closing the circuit at the Baviaanskloof Interpretive Centre.

    Overnight sites and practical information

Each overnight site has sleeping units, a shared cooking and social space, solar lighting, flush toilets, hot showers and a splash pool. The sleeping units have mattresses; hikers need a sleeping bag and pillow. The shared kitchens have gas hobs, cooking and eating equipment, while fires may only be made in the supplied fireplaces or braai areas.

Water is piped to each camp from mountain streams for drinking, cooking and washing. Conditions vary with rainfall, so hikers should still carry water for the day and use their own judgement about treatment.

The trail is available throughout the year. Summer heat can be intense, while winter brings cool walking temperatures and cold nights. Mountain weather changes quickly in every season, and hikers should pack for heat, rain, wind and cold.

There is no mobile reception on the route and vehicle access is limited. Hiking groups receive a satellite phone for emergencies. Carry a first-aid kit, survival bag and thermal blanket, stay together during adverse conditions, and follow the operator's safety briefing.

Confirm current departure dates, inclusions, accommodation and any booking requirements directly with the route operator before travelling.

  • About the area:

Nieu-Bethesda lies in the dry interior of the Eastern Cape, north of Graaff-Reinet. The village is well known for its quiet atmosphere, creative character and remarkable Karoo setting. Just beyond it, the foothills of the Sneeuberg Mountains give way to working farms, layered geology and a landscape with a very long human history.

Ganora Guest Farm is about 7 km from Nieu-Bethesda. The area’s fossils, rock art and farming heritage make the Canyon Mini Camino as much a place-based experience as a hiking route.

  • Hike Directions:

The walking programme is based at Ganora Guest Farm outside Nieu-Bethesda. Hikers normally arrive the day before the first walk, complete three separate day routes, and depart the following day.

    Day 1 – Circular route

The opening walk is a roughly 15 km circuit from the farm area. It introduces the open Karoo terrain and gives the group time to settle into the pace of the route.

    Day 2 – Point-to-point farm walk

After a vehicle drop-off, the group walks about 15 km back through the farm landscape. The route combines open plains with the smaller details that make this area distinctive: rock formations, farm life and the wide horizon of the Sneeuberg foothills.

    Day 3 – Canyon hike

The final and longest day is approximately 20 km. It focuses on the private canyon country, where the sense of scale changes from wide veld to more enclosed rock landscapes.

    What to expect

The trail is slackpacked, so carry water, snacks, sun protection and the layers needed for a Karoo day in a comfortable day pack. Your main luggage remains at the base. The hike is best suited to people comfortable walking consecutive 15–20 km days on uneven natural ground.

Karoo weather can change quickly between a cold start, strong sun and a windy afternoon. Sturdy walking shoes, a brimmed hat, warm layer and reliable water bottle are essential. Ask the operator about the current route conditions, meal arrangements, group size and whether farm activities or heritage sites can be visited during your chosen departure.

    Accommodation and Amenities

Participants are accommodated in tented lodgings at the basecamp on the farm, providing an ideal starting point for the two day-hikes of varying lengths. For those wishing to focus solely on hiking and relaxation around the campfire, an optional catering service is available, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Delicious homecooked meals true to the Karoo.

    Hiking Itinerary

Arrival the day before, preferably before dark, to settle in and experience a beautiful sunset and be fresh for the first day of hiking. Starting early for this first day is essential. The second day’s hike is short enough to still be back at camp and head back home. If the second day is done at leisure, spend another night at the campsite.

    Day 1: Bloukrans Plateau Hike

The first day features a circular route of 15–17 km beginning at the southernmost border of the farm. The trail gradually ascends one of the highest local peaks, reaching 1050 meters above sea level. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of the winding canyon and the Komsberg mountains to the south of Sutherland. This challenging day includes steep jeep track ascents and descents, but the effort is well worth it, with ample opportunities for breathtaking landscape photography.

    Day 2: Bloukrans River Hike

On the second day, experience a relaxed circular route of 10–12 km through the riverbed to the striking Bloukrans cliff face, exposed for over 300 million years and adorned with exquisite prehistoric rock art. The trail returns across the plateau via jeep track, passing through dwarf succulent and Nama Karoo veld.

  • Hike Directions:

Embark on an unforgettable six-day journey through the heart of the Tsitsikamma National Park, a trek that unveils a remarkable tapestry of landscapes, from serene coastal forests to majestic mountain peaks.

Day 1: Nature’s Valley to Kalander Hut (3.4 km, approx. 1.3 hours)

The adventure begins with an easy stroll along the eastern bank of the Groot River lagoon. Here, the air is filled with the symphony of birdlife and the gentle murmur of the Indian Ocean. The trail weaves through tall, dry indigenous coastal forest, offering a tranquil introduction to the park's natural beauty, culminating at the Kalander Hut.

Day 2: Kalander Hut to Bloukrans Hut (14.7 km, approx. 7 hours)

Day two presents a more challenging ascent, rewarding hikers with panoramic vistas from Apiesrug. The changing vegetation signals the arrival of the plateau, abundant with fynbos. The majority of the day's hike, however, guides you through afromontane forest, venturing inland towards the Tsitsikamma Mountains' foothills. Bloukrans Hut, perched on a cliff edge, offers stunning views of the river gorges and distant peaks. A coca-cola colored waterfall cascades nearby, inviting you to enjoy its private rock pools.

Day 3: Bloukrans Hut to Keurbos Hut (13.4 km, approx. 6 hours)

This day delves deep into the Tsitsikamma Mountains and its dense forests, creating a sense of remote isolation. The historical Buffelsbos, the Bloukrans River crossing at Waterwitelsgat, and the natural jacuzzis at the Twin Tubs are highlights. The journey concludes at Keurbos Hut, nestled in a lush, wetter forest where the plaintive call of the narina trogon may be heard.

Day 4: Keurbos Hut to Heuningbos Hut (13.4 km, approx. 6 hours)

Day four traverses diverse habitats, featuring river crossings and the ascent of Rushes Pass, which offers majestic views. Untouched indigenous forests reveal themselves in remote mountain regions. The path descends to follow the Elandsbos River and leads to Heuningbos Hut, preceded by crossings of the Kleinbos River and the promise of a refreshing swim in a nearby pool.

Day 5: Heuningbos Hut to Sleepkloof Hut (14.2 km, approx. 7 hours)

The longest day of the trail involves negotiating two saddles, showcasing pristine mountain fynbos and diverse flora. Splendid Pass and Nademaalsnek offer spectacular views. The journey transitions from open mountain slopes to the wet indigenous forest of Mosterdsbos. Sleepkloof Hut, nestled in a forested gorge, provides magnificent views of the Tsitsikamma mountains, a testament to the woodcutter era.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Free State

  • About the area:

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is secretly tucked away in the rolling foothills of the Maluti Mountains and surrounded by breathtaking scenery of wildlife and lush vegetation.

The Golden Gate National Park is a Free State Nature Reserve in South Africa, located in the north eastern part of Free State and derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on the sandstone cliffs, especially the imposing Brandwag rock. The area is famous for its captivating scenery, invigorating climate and the accommodation offered in hotel rooms, rondavels (round huts) and self-catering chalets.

  • Hike Directions:

The trail evens out past rock pools perfect for swimming (do not tarry too long) and through grasslands, when it descends to the overnight hut.

    DAY TWO

Day two is 14 km and is a difficult walk, taking up to 8 hours to complete. The start includes heading up a waterfall to where the trail heads up generaalskop with some steep sections (not great to do in the heat of the day but pack clothing for any eventuality, as weather in the mountains is unpredictable). After the ascent, there is the descent (very steep in places) before venturing down a rather picturesque kloof and down to glen Reenen (hot showers all round).

The Ribbok Trail is the flagship trail in Golden Gate. The route, which covers a horizontal...
