The Erfenis Dam Nature Reserve is a picturesque haven nestled in the heart of the Free State province of South Africa. Covering approximately 700 hectares, this reserve is situated along the northern shore of the expansive Erfenis Dam, which spans 3,308 hectares at full capacity.

A Diverse Ecosystem

The reserve boasts a diverse ecosystem, characterized by dry grass veldt interspersed with Karoo bushes. Along the ridges, wild olive and karee trees create a stunning contrast against the open plains.

Wildlife and Birdlife

The reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including:

  • Black Wildebeest
  • Blesbok
  • Springbok
  • Red Hartebeest
  • Mountain Reedbuck
  • Common Reedbuck
  • Steenbok
  • Burchell's Zebra
  • Endangered Tsessebe
  • Birdwatchers will delight in the diverse avian population, which includes terrestrial birds, waterfowl, and raptors such as the majestic fish eagle.

The dam itself is teeming with fish, including carp, barbel, yellowfish, and mudfish, making it a popular destination for anglers.

Camping and Accommodation

The reserve offers a range of accommodation options to suit various preferences

  • Caravan Park: The caravan park provides ten powered sites with ablution facilities. Additional unpowered sites are available along the shoreline, along with shared ablution facilities.
  • Bush Camp: The bush camp offers five self-catering huts, each equipped with four beds and a refrigerator. Shared ablution facilities with warm water are available nearby. A communal lapa and scullery are also provided for group gatherings.

  • No On-site Shops: There are no shops within the reserve, so visitors must bring all necessary provisions.
