Caledon Nature Reserve

The Caledon Nature Reserve is a hidden gem nestled in the Free State province of South Africa. Situated along the scenic R701 road between Wepener and Smithfield, this 2,300-hectare haven offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of the South African wilderness.

A Watery Wonderland

The reserve derives its name from the majestic Caledon River, which flows through its heart. The river is dammed at Welbedacht Dam, a vital source of water for the city of Bloemfontein. The reserve gracefully unfolds along the western shore of this expansive reservoir, creating a picturesque landscape.

A Tranquil Camping Experience

The reserve offers a secluded camping site, accessible to all vehicles, nestled within the heart of the game camp. This tranquil retreat allows for exclusive use by a maximum of five people at a time. The campsite features modern ablution facilities with hot and cold showers and flushing toilets, as well as a cozy wooden house structure that can be used as a small kitchen. A built-in braai (barbecue) is also available for outdoor cooking.

Important Considerations for Visitors:

  • Self-Sufficiency: Visitors are responsible for bringing their own food, cutlery, utensils, tents or caravans, and firewood.
  • Limited Facilities: The reserve does not have electricity or day visitor facilities.
  • No On-site Shopping: Visitors must bring all necessary provisions as there are no shops within the reserve.
