Trail area: Kammanassie Mountains near De Rust, Western Cape

Access and current bookings: Kammanassie Camino. Obtain the active dates, exact meeting point, route profiles, guide requirements and access permissions before travelling.

  • About the area:

The Kammanassie range rises between the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains in the Little Karoo. It is a meeting point of dry Karoo vegetation, mountain slopes, fynbos elements and wide high-country views. The region is associated with the Kammanassie Blue Butterfly and other specialist biodiversity, so careful low-impact hiking is especially important.

De Rust lies nearby and is a useful practical base for supplies and onward travel, but the hiking itself takes place within controlled reserve, farm and conservation land.

  • Hike Directions:

Zebra Climb — approximately 22 km: The longest day follows winding jeep track through Kammanassie Blue Private Game Reserve. Expect varied Karoo and mountain scenery, a sustained walking day and the possibility of observing wildlife from a safe distance.

Route of Ruins — approximately 13.5 km: This shorter route starts with a transfer from base camp and explores the hillside remains of old dams and other structures. Their history should be treated with care: the origins are not confirmed, so do not present speculation as fact or disturb the ruins.

The Lookout — approximately 17.5 km: The final route crosses reserve land, private farmland and conservation areas to a protea-forest lookout. It uses a steadily rising jeep track with rocky but non-technical ground and wide views towards the Swartberg and Kammanassie ranges. The return section is normally supported by a vehicle transfer.

All routes are guided. Access is by permission only, and route lines, transfer points and conservation restrictions must be taken from the current operator briefing.

    What to expect

Terrain includes gravel roads, jeep tracks, singletrack and rocky ground. Pack sturdy hiking shoes, a small day pack, enough water, sun protection, warm layers, a torch, personal medication, a basic first-aid kit and insect repellent. Mobile reception can be limited once away from camp.

The landscape supports free-roaming wildlife and sensitive vegetation. Remain with the group, stay on the official trail, keep noise low, do not approach animals and never remove plants, rocks or heritage material. A whistle or equivalent signalling device should be carried as required by the operator.

    Accommodation and trail support

The route uses a bush-camp base at Kammanassie Blue Private Game Reserve. It is a logistical base for the walking programme, with shared accommodation, meals and transfers commonly part of the package. It should not be presented as a separate SA Hikes accommodation listing.

Confirm the current support arrangement directly with the operator. Package inclusions, dietary support, camp facilities, departure dates, transport and group rules can change.

Trail base: Rooiheuwel Guest Farm, Nuweveld Mountains, near Beaufort West, Western Cape.

Confirm the current approach road, chosen route, map/marker status, water plan, slackpacking option and booking contact directly with the trail operator.

  • About the area:

The Nuweveld edge of the Great Karoo is quiet, dry and highly variable in light and temperature. The trail network relies on managed farm access, so stay on marked routes, close gates as found, leave no litter and avoid disturbing stock or wildlife. Do not assume water from seasonal streams or fountains is potable without current advice.

  • Hike Directions:

Short routes range from 2 km Knoffelfontein and 2.3–2.6 km Dripval up to the 17.4–18.9 km Tafelkop–Grootdroom variants. Other marked choices include Donkerhoekfontein (4.2 km), Doringleegte (5.1 km), Bulhoek (5.83 km), Rivier (6.2 km), Piekniekval (6.3 km), Donkerhoek (8.34 km), Rooiberg (8.45 or 12.79 km) and Aar (8.9 km).

The Boplaas-based circular sequence uses Tafelkop (13.31 km or a 10.1 km shortcut), Aar (8.9 km), Piekniekval (6.24 km) and Bulhoek (5.83 km) over one to four nights.

The five-day route is Boplaas–Middelplaas (12.9 km), Middelplaas–Arendsnes (9.8 km), Arendsnes–Rietvlei (15.44 km), Rietvlei–Grootdroom (15.3 km), then Grootdroom–Boplaas (12.8 or 14.3 km). The seven-day option adds the 8.3 km Donkerhoek circular walk and the 8.9 km Aar loop, either before or after the main route.

    What to expect

The network covers a wide range of effort levels, but the longer lines are rocky, exposed and more demanding than the distances alone suggest. The Karoo can be very hot in summer and cold in winter; plan water, sun protection, wind layers and start times accordingly.

Carry enough water, navigation supplied for the selected route, a headlamp, basic first aid and blister care, sun protection, a warm layer and comfortable footwear with good support. Anyone on the multi-day routes should know the current water, camp and emergency arrangements before departure.

    Camps and route bases

The network uses Boplaas, Grootdroom, Bloubos and other farm bases. The five-day itinerary includes a tented night at Arendsnes, an overnight in the old Rietvlei school building and stays at mountain/farm accommodation. These are trail logistics, not a separate accommodation article; exact facilities and whether tents or gear are required must be confirmed at booking.

  • Hike Address:

Start/finish: Welgemoed campsite, approximately 71 km from Beaufort West, Western Cape.

The precise meeting instructions, camping arrangements, route conditions and booking contact must be confirmed directly with the operator.

  • About the area:

The route moves from sweet-thorn country through Oukloof Pass and onto the open Nuveld plateau, then back through the headwaters of the Leeu River. Wildlife may be encountered near the Karoo National Park boundary, but this is primarily a landscape-and-distance hike. Respect farm access, keep gates as found and leave the arid environment exactly as you found it.

  • Hike Directions:

The group meets at Welgemoed campsite, roughly 71 km from Beaufort West, and leaves vehicles there for the duration of the circuit. The first afternoon is for settling into camp.

The walk to Oukloof is the longest early stage at about 27.5 km. It follows two-track and gravel roads through the upper Koekemoers River area before entering Oukloof Pass, where the route may cross the winding river repeatedly.

Day three covers about 26 km to Tweefontein, climbing before easing onto the Nuveld Mountains plateau. The next 22.5 km stage descends toward the upper Leeu River through a changing landscape of red koppies and deeper drainage lines. The final 27 km returns toward Welgemoed along the Karoo National Park boundary, with expansive views over the last section.

    What to expect

This is endurance walking, not technical mountain scrambling. The stages are long, with open sun, wind and sharp temperature changes between day and night. The routes are marked, but hikers should still follow the current organiser briefing and avoid leaving the designated path on private land.

Bring your own tent and bedding, a functional day pack, sun protection, enough water capacity, trail shoes, warm evening layers, headlamp, personal eating equipment and basic toiletries. River crossings and ground conditions depend on weather; ask the organiser about current conditions before travel.

    Camps

The circuit uses straightforward wilderness-style camps, with equipment transported ahead. The opening camp at Welgemoed has basic bush toilets and simple warm-water washing arrangements; facilities at the intermediate stops should be confirmed before booking.

Trail area: Kogelberg Biosphere and Whale Coast, Western Cape

Current route and bookings: Wild Wellness — Kogelberg Camino. Confirm operating season, exact itinerary, difficulty options, permits, transport and weather/tide contingency before travelling.

  • About the area:

The Kogelberg Biosphere is a globally important part of the Cape Floral Region, with a remarkable range of fynbos habitats from mountains to coast. Forest pockets, rivers, beaches and rocky peaks make it one of the most varied hiking landscapes in the Western Cape.

The route combines natural heritage with cultural and community connections. Treat each reserve's rules as specific to that place, particularly in protected coastal, wetland and forest sections.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 — arrival walk: Approximately 5 km. A short seaside orientation walk follows the initial briefing.

Day 2 — beach day: Choose a roughly 14 km or 21 km coastal option. The day combines fynbos path, a long beach section and estuary country; the route can involve a tide-dependent crossing.

Day 3 — mountain day: Approximately 14 km, reaching around 634 m. A summit route is available for confident hikers; a guided contour alternative avoids the more exposed scrambling section.

Day 4 — Kogelberg Nature Trail: Approximately 15 km. Enter Kogelberg Nature Reserve and climb through indigenous forest beside a mountain stream and waterfalls before descending by zig-zag paths.

Day 5 — coastal day: Approximately 13 km. Follow the coast through a penguin-colony area and private-reserve beach country.

Day 6 — final summit: Approximately 5 km. A final mountain walk reaches a viewpoint over the route before return transport.

The operator may alter individual days for tide, weather, conservation or safety. Obtain the current route plan and do not rely on this article for estuary crossings or summit access.

    What to expect

Pack secure hiking footwear, a day pack, sun protection, windproof and waterproof layers, ample water, swimming gear if desired, personal medication and a basic first-aid kit. Beaches can be exposed; mountain paths can be wet, steep and slippery. The trip runs in the warmer season and is normally unavailable during the winter closure period.

The biosphere supports sensitive fynbos and wildlife. Remain on the guided route, give wildlife space, do not approach the Rooisand horses or penguin colony, and never remove plants, animals, rocks or heritage material. Respect the guide's decision to use an alternative route when conditions are unsafe.

    Accommodation and trail support

The trek uses moving accommodation bases with guided walking, luggage transfers and transport between route sections. Shared, private-en-suite and bespoke formats are booking choices for the same Kogelberg Camino, not separate SA Hikes articles.

Confirm the current accommodation sequence, support, permits, participant requirements, transfers and seasonal operating dates before booking.

Trail start area: R318 between Montagu and Touws River, Western Cape

Current route and bookings: Montagu Camino. Confirm active departures, land access, whether a guide is required, transport, weather plan and the precise start/finish details before travelling.

  • About the area:

The Klein Karoo is a dry inland landscape of low mountains, scrub, wide gravel roads and large skies. The route connects private conservation and farm country on the approach to Montagu, making it a quieter contrast to the Cape's better-known mountain paths.

Its stillness is part of its character, but it also increases the need for preparation. Heat, weather, vehicles, wildlife and remoteness require conservative decisions throughout the walk.

  • Hike Directions:

R318 to Driekuilen Nature Reserve — about 20.5 km: Start near Sandvlei Guest Farm on the R318 and walk into the first reserve landscape.

Driekuilen to Gecko Rock — 16 km: Continue on open Klein Karoo roads towards Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve.

Gecko Rock to Machaseh — 24 km: The longest day crosses broad, exposed terrain to the Machaseh camp area.

Machaseh to Welverdiend — 16.6 km: Follow the route through the private-farm landscape towards Welverdiend.

Welverdiend to Ouberg — 14 km: A shorter day reaches Ouberg Private Nature Reserve between the mountains.

Ouberg to Montagu — 20 km: Complete the journey towards Montagu, with the final operational finish and vehicle return confirmed by the current organiser.

The route uses private land and active farms. Do not attempt it independently or assume public access; follow the current authorised itinerary and stay on the agreed paths and roads.

    What to expect

Expect long days in an exposed semi-arid landscape. The walking itself is mostly on gravel roads, but distance, heat, wind, limited shade and consecutive days demand sound fitness. Take sun protection, a hat, water capacity, a warm layer for evenings, rain protection, comfortable road-walking footwear, personal medication and a first-aid kit.

Wildlife sightings are possible on the reserve sections but are never guaranteed. Give animals space, do not approach or feed them, and follow every guide and landowner instruction.

    Camps and trail support

The standard concept is a fully supported slackpacking route with luggage moved between overnight sites. Tented accommodation, meals, showers and guide support are booking arrangements which can change; they should not be copied into SA Hikes as fixed promises.

The source lists budget, standard and semi-luxury formats. Keep these as current booking options under the one Montagu Camino article, not as separate hike listings.

Trail area: Gouritz River Mouth to Mossel Bay, Western Cape

Current route and bookings: Oystercatcher Trail. Confirm current departures, access permissions, boat arrangements, tide plan, weather advice, transfers and the precise itinerary before travelling.

  • About the area:

This section of the Garden Route coast sits where the Gouritz estuary, low coastal cliffs, fynbos and broad beaches meet. Fransmanshoek is known for its sculpted rock coastline and protected natural character, while Mossel Bay's St Blaize route provides a fitting finish beside the sea and lighthouse.

The coast supports seabirds and other wildlife throughout the year. Treat wildlife viewing as a possibility, not a guarantee, and give all animals space.

  • Hike Directions:

Gouritz River Mouth to Boggoms Bay via Fransmanshoek — 19 km: The route begins at Gouritz River Mouth and crosses the river by boat where the trail operator has arranged a safe crossing. From there it follows the coast past the historic Fonteintjies watering place and through Fransmanshoek Conservancy to Boggoms Bay. The reserve's distinctive red rock shore and maritime history make this the route's most varied day.

Boggoms Bay to Dana Bay — 14 km: This long shore stage runs from Boggoms Bay towards Dana Bay, passing Springer Bay and Nautilus Bay. Much of the walk is on beach and its practical line depends on tide, swell and sand conditions. A transfer returns walkers to the trail base after the day.

Dana Bay to Mossel Bay via the St Blaize Trail — 14 km: The final day follows the coast from Dana Bay towards Mossel Bay. The St Blaize Trail section contours above the cliffs and passes the Pinnacle Point area before the trail finishes near Cape St Blaize Lighthouse.

The trail should be walked only with the current operator's route plan. Boat crossings, tide windows, weather and coastal access can change the safe itinerary at short notice.

    What to expect

Expect firm and soft beach walking, coastal paths, occasional uneven rock and exposure to wind, sun and changing weather. Bring well-worn walking shoes, a day pack, sufficient water capacity, sun protection, a warm windproof layer, rain protection, personal medication and a basic first-aid kit. Binoculars can be rewarding for shorebird and marine viewing.

This is an open coastline, not a promenade. Do not attempt unplanned river-mouth crossings or shortcut around headlands, and do not depend on old tide times. Follow the guide's decisions, remain on authorised paths and keep away from sensitive coastal and heritage features.

    Accommodation and trail support

The standard itinerary is a guided, supported slackpacking format with a fixed trail base and transfers to the daily start or finish points. These arrangements make the linear coastal route practical but should not be presented as a separate accommodation listing.

The source also describes a shorter two-night version using parts of the same coastal network. Keep that as a current option within this Oystercatcher Trail article rather than importing it as a duplicate trail. Confirm its exact sequence, walking distance and active availability directly with the operator.

Trail base: Betty's Bay, Western Cape

Current route and bookings: The Penguin Trail. Confirm current dates, permits, group requirements, guide arrangements, tides and weather advice before travelling.

  • About the area:

Betty's Bay lies in the Kogelberg Biosphere, a centre of Cape Floral Region biodiversity where mountain fynbos meets one of the Western Cape's most dramatic coastlines. Hangklip, the Kogelberg forests and Stony Point each show a different face of this landscape.

Stony Point is a managed African penguin colony. Visitors should use the official access facilities and follow all manager instructions; viewing wildlife responsibly is part of the trail's value.

  • Hike Directions:

Hangklip Peninsula to Silversands Beach — 13 km: Start below Hangklip Mountain and pass the lighthouse, coastal midden landscape and fish-trap area before traversing the peninsula. Expect beach walking and some rock scrambling around Sea Farm Peninsula before finishing at Silversands.

Kogelberg Oudebosch to Harold Porter — 10 km: Begin in the Kogelberg Biosphere and climb the Oudebosch River Valley through yellowwood forest. A rocky ascent reaches the saddle, then the route continues via Leopard's Kloof and descends by zig-zag path into Harold Porter National Botanical Garden. This is the most demanding day, with scrambling and some exposure.

Jock's Bay to Stony Point — 5 km: Follow the coast from Jock's Bay via Dawid's Kraal and Main Beach, then around Stony Point Bay to the penguin colony. The river outlet may require a safe wade or a route adjustment depending on conditions.

The trail is timed around low tide for the coastal days. Follow the guide's current route and never attempt to cross river mouths, scramble coastal rocks or enter sensitive heritage areas independently.

    What to expect

Bring stable walking shoes, thick socks, a day pack, water, rain and wind protection, sun protection, a hat, personal medication and a basic first-aid kit. A hiking pole, swimwear and binoculars can be useful. The weather can change quickly on the Kogelberg coast, especially in spring.

Keep a respectful distance from penguins, shore birds and all other wildlife. Middens, fish traps and coastal heritage features are protected; look, learn and leave them exactly as you find them. Tides dictate safety on the beach sections, so guide decisions take priority over the published plan.

    Accommodation and trail support

The standard format uses a Betty's Bay guesthouse base, meals, transfers and a qualified guide. These are logistical supports for the hiking route, not separate accommodation content for SA Hikes.

Confirm active departures, season, group requirements, access permits, transport and the current guide arrangements before booking. The source's exact dates, rates and package inclusions are not evergreen information.

Trail area: Rheenendal, Knysna Forest, Millwood and Garden Route coast, Western Cape

Current route and bookings: Portland Camino. Confirm active route stages, access permissions, guide arrangements, group requirements and safety guidance before travel.

  • About the area:

Rheenendal sits inland of Knysna, close to the forests and historical mining country of Millwood. The wider Garden Route landscape moves quickly from indigenous forest to rolling valleys and coast, creating a varied walking experience within short travelling distances.

The old mining sites, forest tracks and literary associations give the route a strong sense of history. They should be explored respectfully: leave all objects in place and follow access guidance around heritage remains.

  • Hike Directions:

Arrival walk — approximately 6 km: An easy introductory walk around the Rheenendal farm and furrow landscape.

Millwood day — approximately 12 km: A guided walk through the old Millwood mining area. This route explores the forested historical landscape and includes a transfer to the starting point.

Forest and coast day — approximately 16 km: The longest and most demanding stage, combining forest, broader landscape and beach walking. It is the core full-day hike of the itinerary.

Forest history day — approximately 9.5 km: A moderate route centred on the Knysna Forest and the region's literary and cultural history.

Departure walk — approximately 3 km: A short final nature walk around the base property.

Daily trails can be adjusted for weather, conservation restrictions and group ability. Follow the current guide instructions and do not enter SANParks or private land outside the authorised programme.

    What to expect

Pack sturdy walking shoes, a hat, sun protection, insect repellent, a small day pack, water, snacks, spare socks and weather layers. Forest paths can be damp and slippery after rain, while the coastal stage may be exposed to wind and sun.

The route crosses protected and private landscapes. Keep to the guide's line, do not use drones, do not bring pets on the trail and respect all flora, wildlife and historical remnants. A hiking pole is optional but can help on uneven ground.

    Accommodation and trail support

The usual format uses a four-night base at Portland Manor, with guiding, meals and support included in the itinerary. This is trail logistics, not a separate SA Hikes accommodation listing.

Confirm the current departure dates, guide-to-hiker ratio, transfers, conservation permissions, food arrangements and weather contingency with the operator before booking.

  • About the area:

The Sandveld is a wide, low-lying region north of the Cape Winelands, shaped by farming, small towns and a strong seasonal contrast. In spring, wildflowers can transform the landscape; outside that period, the open country and quiet roads have their own pared-back beauty.

Aurora and Redelinghuys offer a human scale to the walk, while the sections between them show the agricultural landscape of rooibos and dryland farming. It is a route for hikers who value connection to place and local hosts as much as mountain scenery.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 — Kapteinskloof to Aurora: Approximately 23 km. The trail crosses private farmland towards Aurora. In flower season the surrounding Sandveld can be especially colourful, but the route remains a long walking day in exposed country.

Day 2 — Aurora to RoesRus Williekamp: Approximately 18 km. Continue along gravel roads through the rooibos-growing landscape towards the farm-stay area. This stage is primarily a rural road walk, so sun, wind and water planning matter.

Day 3 — RoesRus Williekamp to Redelinghuys: Approximately 9 km. The final, shorter stage leads into Redelinghuys, a small settlement known for its murals and local artists.

The route crosses private and community land. Do not attempt it independently from this outline: use the current Camino operator's maps, access permissions, host arrangements and daily instructions.

    What to expect

Carry a comfortable day pack, adequate water, sun protection, weatherproof layers, personal medication and footwear suitable for long gravel-road walking. Conditions can be hot, windy and dry, and services between overnight stops should not be assumed.

The appeal lies in the unhurried movement between villages and farms. Respect working land, gates, residents and hosts. Stay on the authorised line of travel, leave no litter and do not enter private land outside the route arrangements.

    Accommodation and trail support

The published format used pre-booked rest-house or farm-host accommodation, daily luggage transfers and meal arrangements. These are support services for the walking itinerary, not separate accommodation listings for SA Hikes.

Because the source is tied to a past departure, verify each current inclusion directly with the operator. In particular, confirm whether hosts, transfer services, meals, group support and route permissions are still in place.

  • Hike Address:

Start base: private farm near Koekenaap, approximately 10 km north of Lutzville, Western Cape.

The exact meeting point, transport, tide plan, land access, current camps and booking contact must be confirmed directly with the trail operator.

  • About the area:

The trail passes a fragile coastal ecosystem shaped by the Olifants River, tidal habitats and remote West Coast geology. Birdlife, flowers and marine life are seasonal, but wildlife and coastal resources should be observed rather than collected. Fishing, crayfish collection and access to special sites are subject to current permits and rules; do not rely on old trail information.

  • Hike Directions:

Arrival and the first/last night are based at Kliphuis, near the Olifants River. The full four-day walk starts after a transfer to Spuitgat se Baai.

Day one follows the coast from Spuitgat se Baai to Luck se Baai for 8.8 km. The stage includes sections where a rising tide can cut off the beach, so its timing must follow the operator’s current plan.

Day two is 9.38 km from Luck se Baai to Camp David, near the Olifants River mouth and its bird-rich estuarine habitat. Day three is the toughest stage: 13.94 km from Camp David to Langklip, following the river-bank transition between coastal and inland ecosystems. The final 9.56 km returns from Langklip toward Kliphuis, with a route through neighbouring farm land to Boomhuis.

Some access is private or special-permission only. Follow the appointed guide and do not assume that mine, fossil, beach or river sections are open independently.

    What to expect

Expect sand, uneven coastal rock, sea spray, wind, sun and variable footing. Low-tide timing makes beach walking easier; high water can make the same route strenuous or unsafe. Navigation boards are used, but a lack of a public trail map and the tide risk mean that hikers must follow the current organised route.

Carry water, sun and wind protection, a rain layer, insect repellent, headlamp, personal first aid, tide-safe footwear, sleeping gear, basic cooking/eating equipment and all food required by the current package. Camps are simple: ask in advance about water, firewood, ablutions and what equipment can be transported.

    Camps

Kliphuis has the most established facilities of the route, while the intermediate overnight sites are deliberately basic wilderness camps. The source describes water, firewood and a braai grid at some stops but little or no ablution infrastructure. Confirm this before booking and pack suitable leave-no-trace sanitation equipment if the operator requires it.

Start and finish: Marloth Nature Reserve office, Swellendam, Western Cape

Permits and current trail information: CapeNature — Marloth Nature Reserve. Confirm current route status, permits, group rules, hut availability, water, fire restrictions, escape routes and weather warnings before travel.

  • About the area:

Marloth Nature Reserve protects rugged Langeberg mountain slopes above Swellendam. Mountain fynbos dominates the high ground, with forest patches, streams and deep valleys creating a strikingly different world from the town below. Spring is notable for flowering fynbos, while winter can bring severe cold and snow on higher peaks.

The trail is bounded in places by private property and conservation land. Remain on the official route and comply with all access, fire and wildlife rules.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 — Marloth office to Boskloof: Approximately 15.7 km. The toughest stage begins with a long climb and ends with rocky descent, a bridge crossing and a final rise to the Boskloof shelters. Allow a full day.

Day 2 — Boskloof to Goedgeloof: Approximately 11 km. Climb steadily into higher mountain terrain before a slow, rocky descent towards Goedgeloof. Fill water only at confirmed live points, as seasonal flow changes.

Day 3 — Goedgeloof to Proteavallei: Approximately 9.5 km. A shorter but still mountainous day climbs through protea-covered slopes towards the remote Proteavallei hut.

Day 4 — Proteavallei to Wolfkloof: Approximately 7.5 km. The distance is shorter, but the day includes a long, steep descent that can be slippery and overgrown in wet conditions. Wolfkloof is the final overnight stop.

Day 5 — Wolfkloof to Marloth office: Approximately 12 km. Cross the river according to safe current conditions, climb and descend through forest and jeep-track sections, then follow the park signs back to the reserve office.

Use CapeNature's current map, briefing and weather advice. Trail markings and distance markers are aids, not substitutes for navigation, judgement and conservative timing.

    What to expect

This is a proper mountain trail. Take a rainproof and windproof layer, warm clothing, headlamp, grip-focused boots, hiking pole, personal first-aid supplies, food and a water-carrying system. Check the forecast, train for long uphill and downhill days, and be willing to turn back or use an approved escape route if conditions require it.

Mobile reception is limited and the Proteavallei area is particularly isolated. Streams, hut water and fire rules must be confirmed at the pre-hike briefing. Pack out all litter, clean huts before leaving and do not make fires except where the current reserve rules explicitly permit them.

    Camps

The trail uses Boskloof shelters, Goedgeloof Hut, Proteavallei Hut and Wolfkloof Hut. Facilities are basic and vary by camp; expect shared sleeping space, simple water arrangements and eco-toilets rather than lodge comforts. Some huts have mattresses, but confirm all current facility and maintenance conditions with CapeNature.

Do not turn the reserve's pre-hike cottages into separate trail accommodation content. They can be mentioned only as practical options for hikers needing an early start.

Growing the Future / Steynsbos, Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy, near Stanford and Gansbaai, Western Cape

Confirm the trail's current seasonal opening, support option, maps, access permissions, group requirements and weather-related advice before travel.

  • About the area:

The Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy lies in the biologically rich Stanford–Gansbaai area. The combination of limestone soils, coastal influence and varied terrain supports remarkable local plant diversity. The Steynsbos milkwood forest is an especially distinctive feature, an isolated forest pocket surrounded by fynbos.

The trail also links natural heritage to working conservation: Growing the Future, Grootbos Nature Reserve and Flower Valley Conservation Trust form part of the story of ecological restoration, skills development and sustainable local livelihoods in the region.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 — Steynsbos to Witvoetskloof: Approximately 6.6 km. Start at the Growing the Future project at Steynsbos and walk through coastal strandveld, milkwood forest, limestone fynbos and mountain fynbos to Fountain Bush Cottage in Witvoetskloof. Allow around three hours.

Day 2 — Witvoetskloof to Witkrans: Approximately 11 km. Descend the Witvoetskloof Valley towards indigenous forest and a waterfall, then climb through limestone fynbos to Grootberg for wide Overberg and ocean views. Continue through Stinkhoutsbos and Flower Valley to the Witkrans Nature Reserve overnight stop.

Day 3 — Witkrans to Steynsbos: Approximately 9 km. The final stage loops around Witkransberg and follows the Baviaansfontein Valley through indigenous forest and rare limestone fynbos. Hikers may be able to summit Swartkransberg or take the contour alternative before descending to the Steynsbos start point.

The trail passes through private conservation land. Routes, access and seasonal operating periods are controlled by the operator; use the current trail map and instructions rather than attempting an unauthorised walk.

    What to expect

The trail is particularly rewarding for hikers with an interest in plants, ecology and landscape change. More than 800 fynbos species have been recorded along the route, alongside distinctive milkwood forest, rare limestone vegetation, seasonal water and wide coastal views.

Wear proper walking shoes and pack water, sun protection, weatherproof layers, a small first-aid kit, personal medication and swimwear if planning to use permitted dams or pools. Treat all plants, insects and wildlife with care. Do not pick flowers, take seeds or leave the path in sensitive fynbos.

    Camps and trail support

The usual three-day route uses two overnight cottage bases: Fountain Bush Cottage in Witvoetskloof and Cone Bush Cottage at Witkrans Nature Reserve. Various package options may add guiding, meals and luggage transfers; the budget format may be self-guided and self-catered.

These are trail-support arrangements rather than standalone accommodation products. Confirm the live package, the minimum group requirement, opening period, luggage arrangements, water and cooking facilities before booking.

Trail area: Witzenberg Valley, Tulbagh, Western Cape

Current event information: Confirm the next edition through the Tulbagh Disa Trail organiser page or its current authorised booking provider.

  • About the area:

Tulbagh lies in a broad valley framed by the Witzenberg, Obiqua and Winterhoek Mountains. The surrounding mix of vineyards, orchards, fynbos and historical buildings creates a distinctive Boland walking landscape. Spring brings blossom and seasonal colour, but it can also bring highly changeable mountain weather.

The trail's community purpose adds to its character: participants walk through the valley while supporting local social initiatives. Confirm the current beneficiary details rather than repeating past allocations as a permanent claim.

  • Hike Directions:

The four-day route moves through the Witzenberg Valley on a mixture of sandy and gravel roads, fynbos tracks, mountain foothills, orchards, wine farms and historical sites. Daily lines may change from one edition to the next, so no fixed turn-by-turn route should be published from an event page.

Expect long days of five to seven hours on foot. The total elevation gain is not described as technical mountain climbing, but the combination of distance, uneven ground and four successive walking days requires strong conditioning and well-tested footwear.

Use the official event briefing, transport plan and current route material. Do not attempt to recreate an annual route independently across farm and private land.

    What to expect

Spring weather in Tulbagh can vary from rain and cold conditions to early summer heat. Bring a 25–35 litre day pack with rain cover, reliable hiking shoes and socks, rain and sun protection, warm layers, a headlamp, water bottle, personal toiletries and a personal first-aid kit. Prepare feet well in advance and manage blisters early.

Water points and event support should be treated as organiser-provided services, not as permanent public infrastructure. Every hiker remains responsible for their own health, hydration and suitability for the distance.

    Accommodation and trail support

The historic event format has used a central Tulbagh accommodation base, with meals, daily transfers and other event support included. These arrangements are part of the fundraiser and may differ each year. They are not separate accommodation listings for SA Hikes.

Current route and bookings: Confirm with the Tulbagh Wine Walk organiser or current authorised booking provider. Ask for the live programme, distances, participating venues, group requirements and transfers.

  • About the area:

Tulbagh Valley sits beneath three mountain ranges and has a strong agricultural and architectural identity. Vineyards, olive farms, orchards and historic village streets sit alongside fynbos slopes and broad views of the Witzenberg and Obiqua country.

Church Street is a notable historic feature of the town, with carefully restored buildings from several periods. Enjoy it as a lived-in townscape and respect private homes, businesses and conservation rules.

  • Hike Directions:

Oakhurst Walk — approximately 13 km: Start near Oakhurst Olive Farm and walk via Theuniskraal Wine Estate, De Oude Drostdy and Tulbagh Winery before returning to the base by arranged transport.

Forgotten Highway Walk — approximately 13 km: Follow the Obiqua Mountain side of the valley, with route visits that may include Twee Jonge Gezellen / Krone and Saronsberg. This is a scenic country walk rather than a technical mountain hike.

A Walk Down Memory Lane — approximately 8–10 km: Visit valley estates such as Montpellier, Rijk's or Manley according to the live programme, then continue into central Tulbagh and Church Street, where Cape Dutch, Edwardian and Victorian architecture provide a historical finish.

Stops and estate access can vary with dates, harvest activity and operator arrangements. Treat the names above as route character, not a guarantee of every venue on every departure.

    What to expect

Pack a day pack, water bottle, sun protection, weather layer, comfortable walking shoes and personal medication. The terrain is mainly gravel and country paths, but valley temperatures can be high and weather can change. This is a guided walking-and-tasting experience, so pace yourself and stay hydrated.

Respect working farms, vineyards and historic buildings. Do not leave marked routes, interfere with farm operations or enter private property outside the guided visit. Alcohol tastings are optional; hiking safety remains the priority.

    Accommodation and trail support

The Wine Walk uses a central estate base and may include meals, tastings, guide services, transfers and additional activities. These are support elements of the walking programme, not separate accommodation listings.

Trail area: Arniston, Whale Coast and Cape Agulhas area, Western Cape

Current route and bookings: Wild Wellness — Walk with Whales. Confirm the current season, tide plan, route, guide availability, permits and safety procedures before travelling.

  • About the area:

This section of the southern Cape combines turquoise coastal water, dunes, fynbos, fishing culture, archaeological landscapes and some of South Africa's most important whale-watching coast. The route reaches the Cape Agulhas area, near the geographic meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

Whale viewing is generally strongest in the season when southern right whales are present offshore, but ocean conditions and wildlife behaviour are never predictable. The coast itself remains the enduring reason to walk it.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 — Arniston orientation: Approximately 4 km. Begin with an introductory walk around the coastal settlement, with route options shaped by tides and access to the sea-cave area.

Day 2 — coastal and beach stage: Approximately 14 km. A short fynbos section leads onto a long beach walk timed around low tide, followed by a final walk to the overnight base.

Day 3 — coastal recovery stage: Approximately 11 km. Continue at low tide towards a Cape-style fishing cottage and coastal swimming areas. This is a lighter day with time for the shoreline.

Day 4 — southward coastal stage: Approximately 16 km. The longest day follows beach, fishing-harbour and koppie terrain, with coastal viewpoints and historical features before finishing in a private-reserve setting.

Day 5 — final coast walk: Approximately 5 km. A final elevated coastal path and heritage-guided cave visit lead into the return transport.

Tide, weather, conservation rules and guide judgement determine the exact daily line. Do not use the route independently from this outline or enter sea caves and heritage sites outside authorised access.

    What to expect

Wear walking shoes suitable for sand and rocky shore, and bring a light day pack, water, sun protection, warm windproof layers, rain protection, personal medication and a basic first-aid kit. Much of the beach walking takes place around low tide, so timing is a safety issue, not an optional preference.

Treat the coast with respect. Never turn your back on the sea, keep out of unsafe surf and rip-current zones, and follow local tide advice. Historical shell-midden, cave and Strandloper-related landscapes are protected and sensitive: view them with the guide, stay on permitted paths and leave everything untouched.

    Accommodation and trail support

The route uses luggage transfers, guided walking and a choice of shared or private accommodation formats. Those are support options within one trail product, not separate SA Hikes articles.

Confirm active season dates, accommodation bases, group requirements, permits, current guide arrangements and transfers with the operator. The source page includes historic season information, which must not be published as current without live confirmation.

Finish: Wupperthal village, Cederberg, Western Cape.

Confirm meeting instructions, access permissions, weather contingencies, camp arrangements and booking contact directly with the operator.

  • About the area:

The Cederberg cedar is an exceptionally threatened part of this mountain environment, and restoration work near Heuningvlei is an important feature of the route. Rock-art sites and community areas must be treated with particular care: never touch, mark or enter sensitive sites without the guide’s specific direction, and respect residents’ privacy and private land throughout.

  • Hike Directions:

The hike opens with a wild-camping arrival night at Drakie Camp.

Day two is around 14 km, heading north toward Suurrug and through the Menskraal area before a climb and descent on a narrow mountain path to the Heuningvlei area. Natural pools may provide a rest stop when conditions allow. The group sleeps at or near Heuningvlei.

The following day uses a roughly 8–10 km circular walk from Heuningvlei to Middel Krakedouw and back. The distance is modest, but the uphill terrain and rough surfaces can make it a long day. This stage includes the cedar nursery context and the wider fynbos landscape.

The return to Drakie Camp is about 14 km, crossing streams, passing rock formations and following a steady climb through protea country. The final day is approximately 15 km toward Kleinvlei and then Wupperthal, descending through Speelkloof and the Tratra River gorge. This last gorge section is weather-sensitive and must only be walked with the operator’s current local guidance.

    What to expect

Expect mixed ground: narrow trails, rocky slopes, thick brush, gravel and occasional stream crossings. While daily distances are shorter than Wupperthal66, the route is still in rugged, isolated terrain and requires fitness, sure-footedness and good pacing.

Carry sturdy trail footwear, water capacity, sun protection, warm layers, a day pack, personal medical and blister-care supplies, trekking poles if useful, headlamp, personal eating equipment and sleeping gear as required by the current package.

    Camps

Drakie Camp provides the first and third night in a wild-camping setting. The middle two nights are based at Heuningvlei, with camping and shared-room arrangements subject to the current trip setup. Temporary washing and sanitation are part of the organised camp logistics; confirm all current arrangements before booking.

Finish: Wupperthal village, Cederberg, Western Cape.

Confirm current meeting instructions, guides, safety requirements, access permissions and booking contact directly with the operator.

  • About the area:

The Wupperthal area is both fragile mountain habitat and a lived-in cultural landscape. Cedar restoration and historic paths are part of the journey, but hikers must respect local privacy, protected heritage and community rules. Rock art must never be touched, marked or entered without the guide’s direct instruction.

  • Hike Directions:

After an arrival night at Drakie Camp, the first two walking days use the cedar-route side of the itinerary: approximately 14 km to the Heuningvlei area, followed by another 14 km back toward Drakie via mountain tracks, cedar-restoration landscape and rock formations.

The next 18 km follows Speelkloof and two-track community connections toward camp near Eselbank. A 20 km stage then moves through fynbos, sandy track, rocky plateau and local footpaths before continuing beside a stream to Akkeba Camp.

The penultimate walking day is roughly 15 km and is the most demanding: a substantial climb leads to wide views across the Cederberg, Tankwa Karoo and the Wupperthal valley before camp at Vaalheuning. The final 12.5 km descends on a 4×4 track toward Wupperthal, including loose rocky ground, before the route finishes in the village.

    What to expect

The route ranges from single track and gravel road to rocky slopes, old vehicle routes, stream corridors and loose descents. The stage distances are manageable in isolation but demanding in sequence. The source highlights an extended climbing section and a short, notably steep part of the penultimate stage.

Hikers need a high level of fitness, good balance and proven mountain footwear. Take a robust day pack, water capacity, sun protection, warm layers, headlamp, walking poles if appropriate, personal first aid and blister-care equipment, and sleeping/camp gear as specified for the current departure.

    Camps

The hike uses organised wild camps, including Drakie Camp, a camp near Eselbank, Akkeba and Vaalheuning. Luggage and camp equipment are transported between stops, with temporary water and sanitation arranged by the operator. Confirm the exact camp plan and what you must carry before booking.

Start: Drakie Camp, Cederberg, Western Cape.

Finish: Wupperthal village, Cederberg, Western Cape.

The current meeting point, transfers, permits, route conditions and booking contact must be confirmed directly with the operator.

  • About the area:

The route crosses a living cultural landscape as well as sensitive mountain terrain. Hikers pass through or near Cederberg communities and use paths with ongoing local significance. Respect residents’ privacy, private property, water sources and guide direction; do not treat homes, farming activity or cultural practices as trail attractions.

  • Hike Directions:

The hike starts with an arrival night at Drakie Camp among Cederberg rock formations.

The first walking day is about 18 km, following two-track paths through Speelkloof and past the Grashoek area before linking local routes between the Cederberg communities and reaching camp near Eselbank. The route follows a perennial river for part of the day, then uses a footpath toward Kleinvlei.

The 20 km second stage visits the Eselbank waterfall area, moves across sandy tracks, rocky plateau and fynbos, and passes the rock feature locally known as Ereboog. A descending single track and stream-side walking lead to Akkeba Camp.

Day four is around 15 km, with short but steep ascents on an old 4×4 route. The high point gives views over the Cederberg, Tankwa Karoo and Wupperthal valley before the group camps at Vaalheuning. The final 12.5 km descends on a 4×4 track toward Wupperthal, including loose-rock sections, and ends in the village.

    What to expect

Underfoot conditions vary from narrow trail to sandy and gravel road, rocky plateau and loose descent. A sustained uphill section and a short, steeper rise feature on the route. Watercourses can make the valleys greener than their surroundings, but hikers should rely only on the water plan supplied by the operator.

Bring a proven day pack, hiking shoes with good grip, trekking poles if helpful, sun protection, warm layers, personal first-aid and blister-care items, drinking-water capacity, a headlamp, personal eating gear and your own tent and bedding unless a current package specifically provides them.

    Camps

Overnights are in remote, wild-camping locations: Drakie Camp, a site near Eselbank, Akkeba Camp and Vaalheuning. The organiser transports camp equipment and provides temporary basic sanitation and water arrangements. Confirm the current tent, shower, toilet and weather arrangements before booking.

Trail area: Ponta Malongane to Santa Maria, Mozambique

Current route and bookings: Experience Santa Maria. Confirm current route, tide plan, border/entry requirements, guide arrangements, medical support, travel insurance and active itinerary before travelling.

  • About the area:

The southern Mozambique coast combines long beach walking with marine life, dunes, coastal vegetation and a remarkably low-density shoreline. Wildlife, marine activities and Elephant Park visits may be available through the operator, but should be presented as optional local context rather than guarantees.

Respect marine-reserve and community rules, leave no litter and avoid disturbing nesting or shore wildlife. Tides, weather and access conditions determine the safe line each day.

  • Hike Directions:

    Five-day route:

Ponta Malongane to Techobanine — 11 km: A shorter opening beach stage to settle into the route.

Techobanine to Milibangalala — 35 km: The longest and most demanding day follows remote, open coast for a sustained distance. This is the stage that requires the strongest preparation and early, conservative pacing.

Milibangalala to Ponta Membene — 10 km: A shorter recovery stage along the coast.

Ponta Membene to Ponta Mucumbo — 20 km: Continue south through more dramatic coastal scenery.

Ponta Mucumbo to Santa Maria — 20 km: The final beach walk reaches Santa Maria.

    Three-day route:

Start at Milibangalala, then walk Ponta Membene (10 km), Ponta Mucumbo (20 km) and Santa Maria (20 km). This uses the final section of the five-day trail at a friendlier overall pace.

The route includes a crossing at the Dobela mouth that must be planned around conditions and tide. It is guide-led terrain: do not attempt river-mouth crossings or long remote beach sections independently.

    What to expect

Walking is mostly flat but distance, heat, sand, tide, sun and exposure make it more demanding than the profile suggests. Carry a light day pack, water capacity, sun protection, well-tested footwear or the guide-approved beach-walking setup, a warm layer for evenings, rain protection, personal medication and a first-aid kit. Your support team may move main luggage, but each hiker must still be self-sufficient for the walking day.

This is a malaria-risk area. Seek current, personal advice from a qualified travel-health professional before travel; entry, vaccination and malaria guidance changes and must never be copied from an old hiking page. Comprehensive travel and medical-evacuation cover should be confirmed directly with the current operator and insurer.

    Accommodation and trail support

The hike is a guided, supported slackpacking journey with transfers and overnight stops. These are route logistics, not standalone accommodation content. Do not treat published meals, resort names, spa activities, game drives, snorkelling, fishing, luggage arrangements or transfer promises as fixed SA Hikes content.

The three-day option allows more time in Santa Maria after the walk; keep that as a booking-format distinction within this article, not a separate post.

Trek access: Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania; pre-trek logistics commonly run from Moshi or Arusha.

Current route and bookings: Maus Safari. Confirm the licensed guide team, current park requirements, route duration, health screening, rescue provision, equipment list and active itinerary before making travel arrangements.

  • About the area:

Mount Kilimanjaro rises from northern Tanzania's plains into distinct ecological zones. The climb's extraordinary variety—from forest to high volcanic desert and summit ice—is why it is one of Africa's defining trekking experiences.

It is also a protected mountain environment with large human pressure. Follow park and guide instructions, keep to authorised paths, use established sanitation facilities and carry out all personal waste as required.

  • Hike Directions:

Machame Route — six days: A scenic camping route that begins through rainforest at Machame Gate, climbs through moorland and the Shira area, then follows the southern circuit via Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu before the summit attempt and descent through Mweka. The source describes steep terrain, the Barranco Wall and a long summit day.

Marangu Route — six days: A hut-based ascent and descent from Marangu Gate. The six-day version includes an acclimatisation day at Horombo, then continues to Kibo Hut for the summit attempt via Gillman's Point before descending to Horombo and the gate. It is often selected for its mountain-hut format, but is still a demanding high-altitude climb.

Lemosho Route — seven or eight days: The longer Lemosho formats offer a more gradual approach through forest and the Shira Plateau before passing Lava Tower, Barranco and the southern circuit to the summit. The eight-day option includes additional acclimatisation time and a high camp before Uhuru Peak. The source's seven-day page contains route-description inconsistencies, so the actual itinerary must be confirmed with the operator before publication.

All route descriptions are planning context only. National Park rules, guide-led travel requirements, camp/hut allocation and the active mountain itinerary must be confirmed directly with the licensed operator.

    What to expect

Kilimanjaro passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and glaciated summit conditions. The summit night is particularly demanding: it normally involves a midnight start, steep loose ground, severe cold, fatigue and a long descent after reaching the crater rim.

Train well in advance and discuss fitness, pre-existing conditions, medication and altitude risk with an appropriate health professional. Do not attempt to push through symptoms of altitude illness. The guide team has the authority to slow, descend or end a climb; that decision must be respected.

Essential personal equipment normally includes insulated layers, waterproofs, gloves, warm headwear, boots already worn in, gaiters, trekking poles, headlamp, sun protection, hydration capacity and a personal first-aid kit. Use the operator's current equipment list, not this summary, for the final packing plan.

    Camps, huts and expedition support

Machame and Lemosho are commonly camping-based formats; Marangu is associated with mountain huts. The precise overnight plan, porter allocation, meals, rescue cover, medical provision, park fees and pre/post-climb accommodation are commercial and safety-critical details which must be confirmed before booking.

Never assume that rates, inclusions, group size, oxygen/evacuation arrangements or accommodation named in an older itinerary remain current.

Confirm current park entry, guide arrangements, transfers, the selected lodge sequence and weather-related conditions before travelling.

  • About the area:

Storms River Mouth is one of the Garden Route’s most striking meeting points between forest, gorge and Indian Ocean. The Dolphin Trail follows this wild edge of Tsitsikamma, where dense coastal vegetation opens abruptly onto rock shelves, waves and long sea views. Keep an eye out for marine life, coastal birds and the plant life of the fynbos, but maintain safe distance from cliff edges and surf.

  • Hike Directions:

Arrival day – Tsitsikamma National Park

Check in at the Garden Route National Park Tsitsikamma Section reception. The afternoon can be used for short local walks, including the Loerie Trail or the opening section of the Waterfall Trail, before the trail briefing.

Hiking Day 1 – Storms River Mouth to Misty Mountain Reserve (7.5 km)

The first walk crosses the Storms River suspension bridge and climbs a steep, rocky path to the lookout above the coastline. After the coastal views, the trail descends through indigenous forest to a stream-side lunch stop. A demanding climb up Steilkop follows before a more comfortable forest walk into Misty Mountain Reserve.

Hiking Day 2 – Misty Mountain Reserve to The Fernery (9.5 km)

The second stage drops from the lodge to rock pools and follows the coast at sea level. Expect rocky ground, sea spray and potential swimming or snorkelling stops. The route then climbs to a forest lunch stop and finishes with roughly 3 km through fynbos to The Fernery.

    Departure day

The normal programme returns hikers to the national park by vehicle, using the old Storms River Pass route. Confirm transfer arrangements and times as part of the current booking.

    What to expect

Walk with a daypack containing water, rain protection, a warm layer, sun protection, swimming gear and personal medication. Footwear needs good grip for wet rocks and uneven coast. The trail is guided, but every hiker should be comfortable with a sustained climb and careful movement over rough ground.

The lodge stops are part of the hiking experience, so selected landscape and exterior images of them may be appropriate in the gallery. Avoid turning the article into a room-by-room accommodation listing: the route, conditions and daily walking remain the main story.

Ask the operator to confirm current group-size limits, hut equipment, route options and road directions before travel.

  • About the area:

The route lies between Steytlerville and Patensie in the western Eastern Cape. The surrounding Groot-Winterhoek terrain has a dry, folded mountain character similar to nearby Baviaanskloof, but the river gorge brings a cooler, greener contrast. It is a remote landscape, so arrive prepared and confirm access arrangements before setting out.

  • Hike Directions:

    Day 1 – Bucklands to Ghê-Ghê Hut (10 km)

The route begins at Bucklands Farm and crosses open country on paths that are mostly straightforward. There are two longer climbs before reaching Ghê-Ghê, a restored shepherd’s cottage with a veranda.

    Day 2 – Ghê-Ghê to Gooseberry (16 km)

Day two climbs over Paardenberg, with broad views towards the Cockscomb. The slopes can carry wildflowers and cycads before the route descends on a mix of footpath and jeep track to Gooseberry Cottage.

Day 3 – Gooseberry to Afdak (10 km)

This is another relatively easy day along tracks and paths through mountain ravines. Afdak Cottage sits beneath trees and provides the next overnight stop.

Day 4 – Afdak to Oom Ben se Kamp (10 km)

The trail enters Grootrivier Poort and follows the river between steep cliffs. Expect three river crossings, shaded vegetation, birdlife and opportunities to swim. A lunch break at Rooibaadjie se Grot is a natural highlight before reaching the basic riverside camp.

Day 5 – Oom Ben se Kamp to Bucklands (10 km)

Continue through the poort, passing Blougat Cave and several dry-foot river crossings. After roughly 3 km the gorge opens and the final section follows farm roads back to the vehicles at Bucklands.

    Overnight facilities and preparation

Ghê-Ghê provides a restored stone cottage with basic cooking facilities, a flush toilet and an outdoor shower. Gooseberry and Afdak are more fully equipped self-catering cottages. Oom Ben se Kamp is a simple camp with hammocks under canvas, a fireplace, braai grid and field toilet; hikers who prefer sleeping on the ground should bring a hiking mattress and groundsheet.

Bring the food and personal gear appropriate to the nights you have booked, along with a sleeping bag, pillow, towel, toilet paper and any stove or cookware the selected hut does not provide. The river section calls for secure footwear that can handle wet crossings. Pack sun protection, a hat, swimming clothes, a walking pole if useful, and a warm layer for mountain evenings.

Confirm the current summit routes, group minimum, accommodation sequence, weather decision process and transport between trailheads before booking.

  • About the area:

The Sneeuberg rises above the eastern Karoo in a landscape of huge skies, dry grassland and isolated peaks. Nieu-Bethesda brings a creative village atmosphere, while Graaff-Reinet provides a historic base at the edge of the Camdeboo region. Together they make this one of the more distinctive ways to experience the high Karoo on foot.

  • Hike Directions:

    Day 1 – Arrival in Nieu-Bethesda

Arrive in Nieu-Bethesda, settle into the selected accommodation and use the afternoon to explore the village. The evening briefing prepares the group for the three summit days.

    Day 2 – Compassberg (2,504 m)

Compassberg is the highest summit in the Karoo. The climb is short in distance but steep, with a reported ascent of about 900 m over roughly 6 km. The summit provides far-reaching views across the Great Karoo, but weather can be sharp and changeable at this altitude.

    Day 3 – Nardousberg (2,420 m)

Nardousberg is the longest hike of the three, using a jeep track approach to the summit. The source lists a distance of 24.27 km and a significant vertical figure; confirm the current route profile and start point with the guide before travelling.

    Day 4 – Toorberg (2,106 m)

The final summit is Toorberg, a roughly 10.21 km hike with an indicated ascent of about 595 m. After the climb, the group returns for a farm lunch before the departure arrangements.

    What to expect

Each peak involves a full mountain day. Bring a reliable daypack, plenty of water capacity, energy food, waterproof footwear, sun protection, warm layers and a windproof outer layer. Trekking poles are useful on steep ascents and descents. Do not rely on village weather forecasts alone: the summits are exposed and can be considerably colder or windier.

This is guided hiking, but it is not a substitute for personal conditioning. The combination of altitude, sustained climbing and three successive days makes it best for hikers with existing hill fitness.

  • About the area:

The Sneeuberg range rises out of the eastern Karoo in a landscape of old farms, high grassland and isolated peaks. Sneeuberg Nature Reserve covers about 14,500 hectares and preserves a striking portion of this mountain country. The surrounding region is known for its wide horizons, geological formations and quiet sense of scale—an ideal counterpoint to South Africa’s busier hiking destinations.

  • Hike Directions:

    Arrival and pre-hike night

The itinerary starts with arrival at Kliphuis and dinner at Gordonville, allowing the group to settle in before the first hike.

Day 1 – Gordonville to Kliphuis (16 km)

The first day gains about 460 m and descends roughly 695 m. The route climbs to a viewpoint over Renosterberg, crosses a grassy plateau among prominent rock formations, then drops towards the river. A poplar-lined stretch and a dam viewpoint lead into the end of the day, followed by a transfer back to Kliphuis.

Day 2 – Kliphuis to the Poplars (13 km)

This shorter stage gains approximately 187 m and descends about 250 m. It circles Mount George, passing rock art and old farm structures before reaching Skilderkrans and the shade of a poplar forest. The day ends with a transfer to the Poplars accommodation.

Day 3 – the Poplars to Oshoek (21 km)

The final standard day is the longest and most demanding: about 21 km, with around 625 m of ascent and 530 m of descent. The route climbs above 2,000 m, with a high Karoo lunch stop before descending to Oshoek. A transfer follows for a swim and early dinner.

Optional Day 4 – Compassberg summit

The optional summit hike climbs Compassberg at 2,504 m above sea level. From the top, the Orange and Sundays river catchments spread away in different directions. Only add this day if you have the fitness, weather window and operator confirmation for a high-altitude climb.

    What to expect

This is a guided and catered hiking experience, but the walking still requires preparation. Pack well-worn hiking boots, wind and rain protection, warm layers, sun protection and enough personal water-carrying capacity for each day. The open Karoo is exposed: temperatures and wind can change sharply, even when the forecast seems calm.

Some sections leave clear tracks and cross rough grassland, game paths or low shrubland. A reasonable level of balance, endurance and confidence on uneven ground is more important than speed. Confirm the current itinerary, accommodation arrangements and optional summit conditions with the operator before booking.

Trail start: Enviro Centre, Kei Mouth, Eastern Cape Trail finish: Gonubie, Eastern Cape Route information and bookings: Strandloper Hiking Trail / Fagala Voet

Confirm current group requirements, briefing time, river-crossing conditions, overnight arrangements and shuttle options before travelling.

  • About the area:

This part of the Wild Coast is defined by estuaries, long sandy reaches and weathered rocky shore. Kei Mouth marks the northern trailhead, while Gonubie lies near East London at the southern end. Between them, small coastal settlements offer brief contact with services, but the trail’s strongest moments are the quieter stretches where the coast feels expansive and untamed.

  • Hike Directions:

The hike begins with a morning trail briefing at the Enviro Centre in Kei Mouth. The standard direction is south-west to Gonubie, where hikers leave the supplied keys at the designated finish point and arrange onward transport.

Day 1 – Kei Mouth to Double Mouth (13 km)

The opening stage follows beaches and grass paths via Morgan Bay to Double Mouth. The overnight is a basic log cabin, with ablutions available at the nearby caravan park. This is a useful day to settle into the coastal terrain and establish a safe pack-carrying pace.

Day 2 – Double Mouth to Haga Haga (9 km)

The route begins on rockier ground to the Quko River, then alternates between sand, goat paths, rocky sections and beaches on the way to Haga Haga. Accommodation is in simple bunk rooms at the hotel.

Day 3 – Haga Haga to Beacon Valley (22 km)

This is the longest stage. The first 8 km includes rocky shelf and shingle beach walking, followed by a longer sandy section towards Beacon Valley near Chintsa. The overnight hut is basic, with rainwater, a cold wash area, long-drop toilet and braai facilities, so carry the personal gear and supplies you need.

Day 4 – Beacon Valley to Gonubie (15 km)

The final day combines sand, rock and pebble beaches, first reaching the Kwelerha River and then continuing to the Gonubie River. Refreshment options can be limited or seasonal, so never rely on finding food en route.

    River crossings and safety

River crossings are a defining part of the Strandloper. The number and depth depend on season, rain and tide; expect at least several crossings and potentially more. Never attempt a crossing at a river mouth, and use closed water shoes or old takkies rather than hiking boots. Keep your clothes, food, electronics and sleeping gear inside properly sealed waterproof bags.

Before departure, obtain the current crossing guidance, tide information and emergency procedures from the trail manager. A survival bag and a length of light rope for securing or floating packs may be useful. This is not a trail for hikers who are uncomfortable with wet feet, rough footing or changing coastal conditions.

    What to pack

Carry a sturdy backpack, broken-in hiking boots, rain and wind protection, sun protection, warm evening layers, sleeping bag, swimwear, towel, personal medication, basic first aid and a headlamp. You will also need your own food plan, drinking water capacity, cooking and eating kit where required, and toilet paper.

Villages or hotels can offer occasional food, supplies and charging opportunities, but these should be treated as a bonus rather than the basis of your plan. Pack enough food and water for the next section before leaving each overnight stop.

  • Hike Address:

Trail start: Trennery’s or Seagulls area, Eastern Cape Trail finish: Areena Riverside Resort or Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve, depending on selected option Route information and bookings: Wild Coast Amble / Fagala Voet

Confirm current start location, ferry timing, group size, guided services and whether the coastal or game-reserve finish is offered for your dates.

  • About the area:

The southern Wild Coast holds a pleasing mix of wide sandy bays, sandstone cliffs, estuaries and long-established coastal villages. It is less remote than some northern Wild Coast hikes but retains a strong sense of space between settlements. The trail provides a gradual walk through this coastal landscape rather than a single out-and-back destination.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 – Arrival and local excursion

The first day is used to transfer from East London to the northern trail base, crossing the Kei River by ferry where conditions allow. A short guided excursion introduces the coast before the first overnight.

Day 2 – Kei River area to Morgan Bay (14 km)

Walk to the Kei River with a community guide, then continue through Kei Mouth to Morgan Bay. The route combines coastal walking with history linked to the former Cape Colony boundary.

Day 3 – Morgan Bay to Haga Haga (14 km)

This stage follows cliff tops, beaches and rockier shore. One river may involve a wade at low tide or a short swim at higher water, so conditions must be assessed on the day. The route also passes beachcombing country where marine debris and historical fragments sometimes appear.

Day 4 – Haga Haga to Chintsa area (16 km)

Expect a varied coastal day with beach walking, small headlands, estuaries and rock pools. The trail finishes at the overnight accommodation in the Chintsa East area.

Day 5 – Choose the coastal or game-reserve finish

The coastal option is about 10 km on mostly sandy beach, followed by a short paddle up the Kwelera River to Areena Riverside Resort.

The game option begins with a transfer to Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve, then follows a guided reserve route of about 13 km to tented camp. It combines walking with a game drive and is a genuine destination-hike variation rather than nearby accommodation.

    Day 6 – Return transfer

After breakfast, the package returns hikers to East London.

    What to expect

The Amble is guided and supported, but coastal weather, sea conditions and ferry operations can still influence transfers and daily plans. Pack comfortable walking footwear suited to beach and rock, sun and rain protection, a swimming layer, daypack, water capacity and any personal medication. Ask about current luggage-transfer limits, meals, guide arrangements and the availability of your preferred finish option before booking.

Confirm the exact meeting point, current route, group requirements, luggage support and weather or river conditions before travelling.

  • About the area:

Pondoland is one of South Africa’s most evocative coastal landscapes, known for its green headlands, river mouths, deep gorges and long open beaches. Waterfall Bluff is especially memorable because the waterfall drops directly into the sea, a rare feature on the South African coastline.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 – Port Edward to Mnyameni (15 km)

Meet near the Wild Coast Sun in Port Edward and walk south along the coast to the Mnyameni area for the first overnight.

Day 2 – Mnyameni to Mtentu (15 km)

Continue through the Pondoland coast to the Mtentu area. The day is typical of the route: a changing mix of natural shoreline, river country and rural coastal landscape.

Day 3 – Mtentu to Port Msikaba (13 km)

The third stage travels south to Port Msikaba, a quieter portion of the Wild Coast where hikers experience the scale of the coast away from larger towns.

Day 4 – Port Msikaba to Port Grosvenor (11 km)

This shorter day moves towards Port Grosvenor. Treat it as a chance to hike steadily, take in the scenery and arrive with enough time to enjoy the overnight stop.

Day 5 – Waterfall Bluff, Cathedral Rock and Tearoom (11 km)

The concluding stage visits the signature sights around Waterfall Bluff and Cathedral Rock. The final details of access, river conditions and the day’s line should always be confirmed with the guide.

    What to expect

Bring well-used trail shoes, a daypack, rain and sun protection, swimming clothes, headlamp, personal medication and snacks. Accommodation and the main meals are normally part of the guided trail, but hikers should still carry the water and personal supplies they need through the day.

The Wild Coast is beautiful precisely because it is less developed. Be prepared for patchy mobile signal, changing weather and practical adjustments from the guides. Respect local communities, stay with the group and do not cross rivers or approach cliff edges without the guide’s direction.

Trail operator: Manukuza Safaris Trail area: Balule Nature Reserve, Greater Kruger, Limpopo Access: Confirm the current meeting gate, transfer process, dates and trail requirements directly with the operator before travel.

  • About the area:

Balule Nature Reserve forms part of the wider Greater Kruger landscape. River systems, open bushveld and wildlife movement make guided walking especially rewarding, while the changing daily route keeps the focus on interpretation rather than on a fixed trail map.

  • Hike Directions:

The group meets the guides at the agreed reserve gate and is transferred to the basecamp. An introductory afternoon walk normally follows on arrival. The middle days feature a longer morning walking safari, a midday break and a further guided afternoon walk. The final morning includes a shorter last walk before departure.

No fixed route or distance should be published. The guide may begin on foot from camp or use a short vehicle transfer to reach suitable walking ground, and all routes remain subject to conditions on the day.

    What to expect

This is an immersed bushveld experience in a big-game area, with professional guides leading every outing. Bring quiet-coloured clothing, good walking shoes, sun protection, water and a daypack. Listen carefully to every safety briefing, stay with the group and never walk away from camp or the guides.

The basecamp is useful for rest and recovery, but the article should not become an accommodation listing. Confirm the current gear list, fitness requirements, arrival logistics and any catered or self-catering arrangements directly with the operator before booking.

Trail departure: Satara Rest Camp, Kruger National Park Trail area: Mathikithi wilderness area, Limpopo Current information: Confirm current schedules, permits, park entry rules and logistics with SANParks or the operator via the source link before travel.

  • About the area:

Mathikithi lies in a less-developed wilderness section of Kruger south-central bushveld. Rocky rises provide lookout points while streamside vegetation, open ground and animal paths make the walk feel very different from the formal road network around Satara.

  • Hike Directions:

Hikers meet at Satara for the trail departure process, then travel with the ranger team to the wilderness camp. The two middle days follow the usual wilderness-trail rhythm: an early guided walk, a rest during the warmer middle of the day and a shorter afternoon outing before returning to camp.

Distances and the exact line of travel change with conditions and wildlife. The guides determine each route and may use a short transfer to reach an appropriate start point. The final morning is normally for breaking camp and returning to the departure area rather than a further full hike.

    What to expect

The trail uses basic huts with shared facilities and low-impact power, not a standard rest-camp setup. Prepare for early starts, long walking days, dust or heat, cool mornings and very limited connectivity. Bring already-worn-in boots, neutral-coloured walking clothing, rain and sun protection, a headlamp and a reliable water-carrying system.

Park rules and ranger instructions apply at all times. The group must stay together and preserve the wilderness atmosphere: no independent excursions, no reliance on mobile signal and no unnecessary noise. Confirm current eligibility, gear requirements, meals, sharing arrangements and departure procedures with SANParks or the trail operator before booking.

  • About the area:

Timbavati forms part of the wider Greater Kruger ecosystem. Its open boundary with Kruger National Park creates a substantial wilderness setting for guided walks, with varied bushveld habitat and a wide range of wildlife.

  • Hike Directions:

Days are normally structured around one guided walk in the morning and another in the afternoon. There is a rest period at the base camp in the middle of the day, then the group returns to the veld later when temperatures are more comfortable.

Walking routes are not self-guided and distances are not fixed. Confirm the current daily programme, fitness requirements and arrival procedure with the operator before booking; private vehicles are not used for the final access to the camp.

    What to expect

Expect the pace and content of a professional walking safari: reading tracks and signs, learning about plants and animals, and moving through the bush on the guides' instructions. The camp serves as a base between outings rather than the main reason for the listing.

Bring quiet-coloured walking clothing, sturdy shoes, sun protection, a water bottle and a light layer for cool starts. Follow every guide instruction immediately and do not leave the group. This is a wildlife experience in an open Greater Kruger setting, not an independent hiking route.

Confirm current road conditions, basecamp equipment, route markers and the best access route before travelling.

  • About the area:

The Waterberg is an ancient mountain region of bushveld, rock ridges, seasonal streams and wide views. Skeurkrans offers a compact way to experience it, close enough to Pretoria for a weekend yet far enough from town to feel like a real bush getaway.

  • Hike Directions:

    Leopard Trail – 9 km

Follow leopard-paw markers through thick bushveld and past a stream. The route then climbs steeply to a plateau below a distinctive koppie, where the first wide views open out. It continues towards Hanglip, crosses a saddle and reaches the top of the krans before dropping through a kloof with rock pools.

The final section crosses indigenous bush, climbs once more to a plateau and descends back to camp. The route is well marked, but the repeated steep sections call for a steady pace and good footwear.

Bobbejaan Trail – about 6 km

The shorter trail follows baboon-footprint markers through indigenous bush. It includes one steep climb to the mountain top, making it an easy-going second day for hikers who want views without another long route.

    Basecamp and preparation

The camp is about 200 m from the parking area, up a rocky, winding path, so pack to carry your own food and gear. It has A-frame huts with bunk beds and mattresses, a communal kitchen and lapa, hot showers and flush toilets. Bring your own cutlery, crockery, food and other personal camping supplies unless the operator confirms updated equipment.

A high-clearance vehicle is sensible on the gravel approach. During the rainy season, the Waterberg vegetation and streams are at their best, but paths may be wet and slippery.

Trail base: Bateleur Private Nature Reserve, Waterberg, Limpopo Route information and bookings: Stamvrug Hiking Trail / Fagala Voet

Confirm the current route map, camp sequence, group rules and access details before travelling.

  • About the area:

The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve is a broad landscape of bushveld mountains and sandstone ridges. At Stamvrug, the scenery changes with season: early starts bring cooler air and a better chance of seeing wildlife, while the higher viewpoints make the range feel much bigger than its distance from Gauteng suggests.

  • Hike Directions:

    Two-day backpacking route

The main overnight option links Kloof Base Camp and Stamvrug Base Camp. The first day is about 13 km, following the Leopard Trail through the Waterberg mountains. The second day uses the shorter Zebra and Quagga trails, about 6 km in total, to complete the route.

    Day trails

Several shorter routes can be walked from the camps. The Escarpment Trail is about 6 km, the Game Trail about 4 km and the Moepel Trail about 8 km. More options may now be available, so select the current official route map rather than relying on a single old list.

    Camps and preparation

Kloof and Stamvrug camps provide bunk beds, mattresses, hot-water showers, toilets and sheltered braai areas. The farm also has a larger farmhouse for groups. These are part of the hiking destination and can be described as the trail base, without turning the article into accommodation advertising.

Start early in summer and carry at least two litres of water. The reserve is described as malaria- and bilharzia-free, but visitors should make their own current health decisions. Confirm the recommended vehicle type for the access road, group minimum, firewood availability and which camps are open before travel.

  • About the area:

The Sweni River cuts through open plains in the central Kruger landscape. It attracts wildlife while giving the trail a wide, spacious feel: distant calls carry clearly, the night sky is open and birding differs from the more wooded wilderness trails.

  • Hike Directions:

The group meets at Satara, then heads to the wilderness camp for a three-night stay. The two full days use the standard wilderness-trail routine: an early guided morning walk, a rest during the heat of the day and a shorter afternoon outing.

Routes and distances are intentionally not fixed. Rangers select a safe line of travel and pace for the group, weather and wildlife activity. The final morning is for returning to the departure area rather than another full day of hiking.

    What to expect

The camp is rustic and remote, with no ordinary power supply or dependable mobile connection. Plan for warm daytime walking, cool starts, darkness after sunset and dust or uneven natural ground. Bring worn-in hiking shoes, neutral-coloured clothing, sun protection, a rain layer, a headlamp and sufficient water-carrying capacity.

Hikers must remain with the rangers and follow their directions immediately. Keep the camp quiet and low-impact so that the sounds, night sky and wildlife of the plains remain part of the experience. • About the area:

The Thabaphaswa landscape combines rocky mountain scenery with bushveld and seasonal watercourses. Its trail network gives hikers a useful choice between a quick orientation walk and a longer day in the hills, without requiring a fixed multi-day itinerary.

  • Hike Directions:

The longest published options are the Black Eagle / Tshesane Loop at 15 km and The Lookout Point route at 14 km. Shorter choices include the Mahlare Circular Trail (about two hours), the Klipspringer Hiking Trail (about 1.5 hours) and the Bobbejaan Trail.

Collect the current map and route advice before leaving the camp. The source describes the network as flexible, so exact combinations, waymarking and terrain conditions should be checked locally rather than assumed from an older description.

    What to expect

Expect mountain terrain, unsealed paths and changing footing. Wear supportive shoes, take sufficient water and sun protection, and allow more time for the longer routes than their distance alone suggests. In wet conditions, streams and pools can change the feel of the route substantially.

Camping or a simple overnight base may make it easier to complete more than one route, but these are optional trail-support arrangements rather than the focus of the listing. Confirm current access, parking, route condition and water availability with the sanctuary before travelling.

Trail start and finish: Medike Nature Reserve, Western Soutpansberg, Limpopo Route information and bookings: The Old Salt Trail / Fagala Voet

Confirm future guided departures, the fitness requirement, road access, group rules and current safety information before travelling.

  • About the area:

The Western Soutpansberg combines yellowwood forest, protea slopes, ancient baobabs, mountain wetlands and deeply cut gorges. It is a biodiversity-rich range at the northern edge of Limpopo, with rock art and local cultural history adding depth to the landscape.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 – Medike to Luvhondo Camp via Duluni Gorge (12.3 km)

The route leaves Medike Reception on a steep climb out of the Sand River Gorge. It follows watercourses through Duluni Gorge, with stream crossings, boulder sections and rock-art sites before reaching the Leshiba plains and Luvhondo Camp.

Day 2 – Luvhondo Camp to Sigurwana Lodge via Hamasha Gorge (15.4 km)

The most technical day descends and climbs through Hamasha Gorge. Hikers negotiate angled red rock slabs, stream crossings and rocky forest corridors before a long mountain-bushveld traverse leads to Sigurwana.

Day 3 – Sigurwana to Lajuma Wilderness Camp via Mount Lajuma (15.1 km)

This high mountain stage combines wetlands, grassland, rock art and a summit ascent. Mount Lajuma reaches roughly 1,727 m and is the highest point in the Soutpansberg. The climb and descent have scrambling and loose, rocky ground.

Day 4 – Lajuma to Leshiba Venda Village Lodge via Yellowwood Forest (19.1 km)

The longest stage begins with a steep scramble through the Chimneys, then becomes more flowing across plateau grassland and forest. Ancient yellowwoods are the day’s signature feature before the trail returns to Leshiba’s plains.

Day 5 – Leshiba Venda Village Lodge to Medike (11.4 km)

The final day follows viewpoints above the gorge before re-entering Medike. A long, steep and rocky descent to the Sand River tests tired legs; take it slowly and use poles if they help.

    What to expect

The trail is guided and luggage is carried ahead, so hike with a daypack containing water, snacks, sun protection, warm and waterproof layers, personal medication and emergency essentials. High-clearance vehicles are needed for the dirt-road approach to Medike; hikers travelling in sedans should arrange the current transfer option in advance.

The route passes through conservation land where potentially dangerous wildlife may be encountered. Follow the guide, give animals space and never treat the listed wildlife as a sighting guarantee. The trail is not dog-friendly.

  • About the area:

Bermanzi is set in the Mpumalanga highlands between Machadodorp and Badplaas. Its hiking terrain combines forested gullies, rocky watercourses and open views across the surrounding valley and escarpment country.

  • Hike Directions:

This source page confirms the named trail and its low difficulty but does not provide a reliable route map, total distance or day-by-day description. Before publishing, obtain the current route plan, marked-trail information, daily distances and access arrangements from the operator.

The SA Hikes listing should state clearly that this is a Bermanzi base-camp experience and should not present an invented fixed route until those details are confirmed.

    What to expect

The appeal is gentle exploration of the Bermanzi landscape rather than a technical backpacking challenge. Hikers should still wear suitable walking shoes, carry water and sun protection, and check weather and current trail conditions before setting out. Rock pools, gorges and stream sections need normal outdoor caution, especially after rain.

Trail area: Approximately 10 km outside Badplaas (eManzana), Mpumalanga

Bookings and current access information: Confirm directly with the trail operator before travel.

  • About the area:

Badplaas sits in the Mpumalanga highlands, where grass-covered slopes give way to wooded gullies, streams and folded mountain ridges. The Blue Wildebeest trail offers a compact introduction to this varied landscape, with both panoramic viewpoints and sheltered watercourses.

  • Hike Directions:

The trail lies about 10 km outside Badplaas. Confirm the current meeting point, access directions, trail map and gate arrangements with the operator before travelling.

The standard hike is arranged as two separate day walks from a central base:

    1. Day 1: about 9.5 km, generally easy to moderate.
    2. Day 2: about 6.5 km, moderate to difficult, with more demanding terrain.

Although the distances are manageable for many regular hikers, conditions can change with weather and the second day requires confidence on rougher mountain ground. Follow the marked route and do not rely on an old online description as a substitute for current local instructions.

    What to expect

Expect open grassland, ridge-top views, stream crossings or wet sections after rain, and uneven surfaces in the gorges. Carry sufficient water, sun protection, a rain layer, basic first aid and sturdy walking shoes. Pack swimwear if conditions and the operator allow safe use of the rock pools.

Weather in the mountains can change quickly. Winter brings additional fire risk, and mobile reception can be intermittent. Check the forecast and current trail conditions before setting out, and let the operator know your plans.

Trail area: Bermanzi, between Machadodorp and Badplaas, Mpumalanga

Bookings and current route information: Confirm directly with the trail operator before travel.

  • About the area:

Bermanzi lies in the Mpumalanga highlands between Machadodorp and Badplaas. The Bankspruit cuts through indigenous woodland and rocky gorge terrain, while nearby waterfalls and escarpment slopes create a more rugged experience than a typical base-camp trail.

  • Hike Directions:

Confirm the current booking, start point, route description and access arrangements with the operator before travelling.

    1. Day 1: Begin from the Bermanzi side and hike for roughly five to six hours with your tent and overnight supplies down into the Bankspruit gorge. Camp in the designated primitive site in the indigenous woodland beside the stream.
    2. Day 2: Follow the Bankspruit for approximately four hours towards Uitkoms (Bridal) Falls, then take the uphill route back to the trail's starting area.

The route is strenuous, particularly when carrying a loaded pack. Do not assume that an older online description represents the current trail alignment or water conditions.

    What to expect

This is a genuine backcountry-style overnight: bring a small tent, sleeping gear, food, water treatment or sufficient drinking water, lighting, weather protection and a first-aid kit. The remote camp has no developed services, so hikers must leave no trace and carry out all waste.

Expect a long descent into the gorge, walking beside the river, uneven natural terrain and a sustained climb out on day two. The stream and pools are scenic features, but conditions and water levels must be assessed on the day. Do not attempt unsafe crossings or enter the route in flood conditions.

Trail base: Holhoek, near Paul Roux, Free State Route information and bookings: Holhoek Hiking Trail / Fagala Voet

Confirm the current hunting-season closure dates, access road condition, accommodation equipment and whether bridges/ladders are suitable for your group before travelling.

  • About the area:

Paul Roux lies on the N5 corridor between Bloemfontein and Durban, in the rolling, sandstone country of the Eastern Free State. Holhoek is reached by gravel road from the town and is within reach of Clarens, but feels quieter and more remote once you reach the farm gate.

  • Hike Directions:

    Day 1 – Main loop (13 km)

The longer section uses mountain paths and valleys to reach a series of caves. One is near a stream and contains San rock art; another has evidence of Iron Age farming. The route also passes historic shelters and older farm ruins. Bridges over streams and ladders on steeper ground require steady balance.

    Day 2 – Shorter loop (7 km)

The second section completes the figure of eight. It leads to another cave associated with local war-time history and offers more of the Free State mountain scenery before returning to the farm base.

    Accommodation and preparation

The on-site self-catering base includes thatched huts and a larger house, with beds, mattresses, hot showers, toilets, kitchen facilities and a lapa/braai area. This accommodation is integral to the trail, so it can be described as route logistics rather than treated as a separate accommodation listing.

Bring your own bedding, food, utensils, firewood and toilet paper unless the operator confirms otherwise. High-clearance vehicles are advisable on the approach road. The ladders and bridges can be uncomfortable for people with a fear of heights, and care is essential in wet weather.

Trail departure: Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp, Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga Trail operator: SANParks wilderness trails Current information: Confirm current permits, schedules, park access and trail logistics with SANParks or the operator via the source link before travel.

  • About the area:

The south-western Kruger landscape around Berg-en-Dal combines rocky kopjes, quiet valleys and botanically rich high ground. Wildlife can be encountered at close range under the ranger team's direction, while high viewpoints give the walk a strong sense of scale.

  • Hike Directions:

Hikers begin the trail process at Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp and travel with the ranger team to the wilderness basecamp. The two full days use early morning and later afternoon guided walks, returning to the same basic camp for rest and overnighting.

Routes are selected by the rangers according to weather, wildlife and the group. Elephant and rhino paths may make some natural lines of travel easier, but the trail remains fully guided and no one should walk away from the group or attempt to follow a previous route alone.

    What to expect

Expect broken ground, granite rock, steepish natural terrain, early starts and a remote camp atmosphere with limited modern services. Pack worn-in boots, neutral-coloured clothing, sun and rain protection, a headlamp and water capacity suited to a warm day in the veld.

The trail is operated under wilderness-trail safety rules. Follow ranger instructions straight away, keep noise and light low in camp, and confirm current fitness requirements, access arrangements and gear requirements directly with SANParks or the operator before booking.

Trail area: Vredefort Dome, Free State Route information and bookings: The Crater Camino / Fagala Voet

Confirm the exact meeting point, selected Day 3 option, current group requirements and water-based activity conditions before travelling.

  • About the area:

The Vredefort Dome is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, formed by a meteorite impact roughly two billion years ago. The impact shaped the ring of hills, folds and river corridors that make the area unusually rich for geology-minded walkers. Its mix of bushveld, riverine woodland, rocky ridges and working farms also supports varied birdlife and plains game.

  • Hike Directions:

Day 1 – Stonehenge River Lodge to Wild Olive Guest Farm (9 km)

The journey begins beside the Vaal River, then heads into the rock formations of the Dome. The route passes the World Heritage quarry area and reaches the wild olive forest at the first overnight stop.

Day 2 – Wild Olive to Paradyskloof (16 km)

The trail climbs gradually through bushveld hills, passing Boer War trenches and a small church before descending into the Paradyskloof valley. Look out for the wider Dome views that explain the shape and scale of this old landscape.

Day 3 – Flexible Vaal River stage

This day has alternative formats. Hikers may combine a short walk of about 6.4 km with a still-water row of roughly 6 km, or choose a longer walking route of around 23 km. Confirm the selected option and its exact sequence before the hike.

Day 4 – Paradyskloof to Sunnyside, then towards Twane Bush Camp (17.5 km listed)

After breakfast near Venterskroon, the route continues through valley trails towards the river and Sunnyside. The programme then moves deeper into the crater landscape, with rockier paths and views from the higher ridges before the next overnight.

Day 5 – Twane Bush Camp to Hadeda Creek (17 km)

The final stage leads through wide plains and quiet valleys back towards the Vaal River, finishing at Hadeda Creek. It is a gentler end to a route built around geology, open space and reflection.

    What to expect

The trail is slackpacked, so carry a comfortable daypack with 2–3 litres of water capacity, sun protection, rain layer, snacks, personal medication and a light warm layer. Trekking poles can help on rocky or uneven slopes, while a swimsuit is useful for river-based sections where conditions allow.

Overnights, main meals, lunch packs and luggage transfers form part of the organised trail experience. They make this a hiking destination rather than a standalone accommodation listing. Still, confirm the final itinerary, individual distance options and what is included before booking.

    2. Day 2 — 11 km: Climb briefly to the plateau, visit two waterfalls through indigenous forest, then return on gentler ground via the heritage site to the base camp.

    What to expect

Start early in hot weather and carry sufficient water for the first day, as the source describes no water point along its opening 14 km. • Hike Address:

Trail operator: Africa on Foot Wilderness Trails Location: Maseke Balule Game Reserve, Greater Kruger, Limpopo

  • About the area:

Maseke Balule Game Reserve forms part of the broader Greater Kruger wilderness system. Its open boundary with Kruger National Park and its mix of riverine habitat, bushveld and rocky koppies make it well suited to slow, on-foot exploration. The focus is not on ticking off a set route, but on reading the landscape with guides who work in it every day.

  • Hike Directions:

Days normally begin with a guided morning walk, followed by a relaxed break in the bush before the group moves on towards the next camp. A second, shorter guided walk is generally undertaken later in the day, with a game drive forming part of the programme where conditions allow.

Morning walks are usually the longer sessions, while the afternoon walk is shorter and timed for the cooler part of the day. The exact distances, route and daily sequence should not be treated as fixed: the guide adapts them to the terrain, weather and safe wildlife viewing opportunities.

    Camps and what to expect

Overnights are at fully established mobile camps rather than permanent hiking huts. This gives the trail a remote, low-volume feel while retaining a supported camping setup. The wilderness camp is part of the trail experience, not a nearby accommodation listing.

Expect uneven natural ground, heat, early starts and periods of quiet observation. Neutral-coloured clothing, sturdy walking shoes, sun protection, a refillable water bottle and layers for cool early mornings are sensible essentials. Confirm the current packing list, fitness expectations, age policy and any medical or mobility requirements directly with the operator before booking.

    Safety and access

This trail is undertaken only with the appointed professional guide and tracker. Guests must stay with the group, listen to safety briefings and follow instructions immediately, especially when wildlife is nearby.

The Greater Kruger region may carry malaria risk at certain times of year. Seek current, personal health advice from a qualified clinician before travel, and check the operator's latest pre-departure information.

Trail area: Skurweberg Mountains, between Badplaas and Machadodorp, Mpumalanga

Bookings and current route information: Confirm directly with the trail operator before travel.

  • About the area:

The Skurweberg landscape combines grassland, sandstone formations, valleys and waterfalls in the Mpumalanga highlands. The trail links several camps through privately managed mountain terrain, giving the route a remote feel while retaining organised overnight stops.

  • Hike Directions:

The network can start and finish at either Pongola Express or Aloe Kaya, with further route combinations linked to the Mount Komati area. Obtain the current map, booking confirmation and route plan from the trail operator before departure, as the available sequence and access arrangements may change.

One example three-day route begins and ends at Aloe Kaya:

    1. Follow the Yellowwood section to Candlewood Camp — about 9.5 km.
    2. Continue through Aloe Garden and along Pompon Way to Pongola Express — about 6 km.
    3. Take the Bergbas route back to Aloe Kaya — about 7.5 km.

A four-day variation can begin at Mount Komati, follow Protea and Yellowwood to Candlewood, continue via Aloe Garden and Pompon Way to Pongola Express, then Bergbas to Aloe Kaya, before returning to Mount Komati via Yellowwood and Spicata. The operator can help match the route to the group's experience and preferred number of days.

    What to expect

High Five offers both backpacking and slackpacking formats. Backpackers carry their own overnight equipment and supplies between camps; the slackpacking option lets hikers carry a smaller day pack while arranged gear transport moves the bulk of their equipment. Confirm the current service, gear limits and collection times directly with the operator.

Expect rugged mountain walking, exposed climbs and changing weather. Bring worn-in hiking boots, enough water capacity, sun and rain protection, a first-aid kit and clothing suitable for cool evenings. This is not an ideal first multi-day hike for someone who is unprepared or unsure on steep terrain.

  • About the area:

The Waterberg Biosphere around Thabazimbi is a rugged bushveld landscape of mountain passes, rocky ridges and private conservation areas. The route may combine scenery with interpretation of local history, savanna and mountain ecology, depending on the guide and itinerary.

  • Hike Directions:

Indaka to Kransberg – about 11–13 km

The first walking day follows the steep gravel of Bakker’s Pass into the Kransberg area. Short local walks and waterholes may be available after arrival, depending on the programme.

Kransberg to Shakawe – 15 km

This is the signature mountain section: a mostly level jeep-track walk along the Kransberg range, with small streams, Waterberg views and a lookout near a dam. The route can include a historic stop near the Grobler museum site before reaching Shakawe.

    Leopard itinerary: Klipbokkie single-track option

The shorter itinerary includes a circular mountain walk near Klipbokkie, descending to waterholes before returning to the lodge base. The exact distance varies in the source itinerary; confirm the current guided route.

Lion itinerary: Rankins Pass and Dabchick section

The longer variation continues down Rankins/Trichardt’s Pass to Grootspruit, then adds a guided single-track hike in Dabchick Wildlife Reserve. The total route is around 50 km across four hiking days.

    What to expect

Most of the trail is hard gravel road or jeep track, so cushioned walking shoes can be more comfortable than stiff boots, although good grip remains important. Pack a daypack with water, sun protection, warm layers, rain protection and personal medication. Bushveld temperatures are variable: hot afternoons, late summer rain and cold mountain winter conditions are all possible.

The lodges, game drives and conservation talks are part of the supported hiking experience, but are not the purpose of the SA Hikes article. Include only selected trail-setting photographs; do not reproduce room, restaurant or package marketing.

Kaapschehoop developed during the 1880s gold rush and remains set among distinctive sandstone formations on the escarpment. Its plateau, forests and wetlands form a transition between the Highveld and Lowveld, creating strong botanical and birding variety.

  • Hike Directions:

Confirm current route maps, hut availability and forestry access with the managing authority before travelling. The source states that two historic huts were not operating; do not promise use of any hut until this has been confirmed.

    • Battery Creek two-night trail: About 23.2 km in total; starts from Barretts Coaches and uses route sections of 6.8–14 km and 9.5 km. Moderate.
    • Kaapschehoop two-night trail: About 31.96 km in total; starts at Kaapschehoop Hut, with a 9.5 km section to Barretts Coaches and a 14 km return section. Easy according to the source, but still a multi-day hike in variable escarpment weather.

The longer sections pass ravines, forest, historic wagon paths, old gold workings, cliffs and viewpoints. The trail also reaches Kaapschehoop village and its gold-rush-era landscape.

    What to expect

Carry suitable clothing for sudden mist, rain and cold evenings, plus water, food, a light source and a first-aid kit. The route includes uneven rock, forest paths and escarpment edges. Stay on the marked trail and respect historic mining and cemetery sites; do not remove artefacts or disturb wildlife.

Trail access: Leshiba Wilderness, Soutpansberg, Limpopo Nearest town: Louis Trichardt Access: The final mountain approach is steep and ground clearance is advisable. Confirm current road, parking, trail-access and guided-walk arrangements with the reserve before travel.

  • About the area:

The Soutpansberg is one of Limpopo's most biodiverse mountain regions. Leshiba sits high on the range, close to the transition between bushveld, forested pockets and sandstone ridges. The reserve's walking network offers a practical way to experience that landscape at a slower pace, whether as a short day hike or as part of a longer stay in the area.

  • Hike Directions:

The marked routes are suitable for self-guided exploration once hikers have checked in and obtained the current trail information. There is no single fixed Leshiba hike; choose a route that matches the available time, the group's ability and the prevailing weather.

Guided walks add another layer to the visit. Depending on what is offered at the time, they may focus on tracking, birds, trees, medicinal plants or the reserve's archaeology. Visits to San rock-art sites are undertaken on guided walks only.

Start early in warm weather, carry sufficient water, and allow more time than the map distance may suggest. Seasonal streams and rock pools are part of the appeal, but their condition changes with rainfall.

    What to expect

This is a rugged mountain reserve, not an urban park. Well-fitting walking shoes, sun protection, a warm layer and a rain layer are sensible at any time of year. The landscape includes uneven surfaces, steep sections and natural drop-offs; use the marked trail network and avoid going off-route.

Wildlife is present throughout the reserve. Walk quietly, keep a respectful distance and ask the reserve team about the current safety guidance before setting out. Check for ticks after a walk and seek professional advice if you have concerns about a bite or illness.

Trail area: Komati Gorge Nature Reserve, approximately 33 km from Carolina, Mpumalanga

Bookings, access and current trail conditions: Confirm directly with the trail operator before travel.

  • About the area:

Komati Gorge Nature Reserve lies about 33 km from Carolina. Its combination of plateau grassland, wooded valleys and fast-flowing watercourses supports both Highveld and bush bird species, including turacos and raptors.

  • Hike Directions:

Obtain the current route map, access instructions and any weather-related alternatives from the operator before travel.

    • Kranskloof Trail — 7 km: From base camp, follow the river downstream, climb steeply from the valley to the krans, descend through a small gorge, then continue beside the river and rock pools before two final forested climbs return to camp.
    • Komati Trail — reported as about 15 km: Start near the dam below camp and follow stream and ridge sections towards the Komati River, passing grassland, wildlife habitat and BaKoni cultural remains before returning via an uphill section and the marked path to camp.

The source page contains conflicting distance information for the Komati Trail. Keep its length as “about 15 km — confirm current distance” until the operator verifies it.

    Heritage and safety

The Komati route passes BaKoni archaeological features. Respect all heritage sites: do not touch, climb on, mark or remove anything. The Kranskloof Trail has steep climbs, uneven rock and exposed cliff-side terrain, so it is unsuitable for hikers unsteady on their feet.

Heavy rain can affect crossings when dam water is released. Confirm the current route and any bridge or diversion status with the operator; never enter flooded sections. Weather changes rapidly on the Highveld, so carry warm and waterproof layers.

    What to expect

Carry water, sun protection, a rain layer, tick protection, a first-aid kit and shoes with good grip. The reserve supports wildlife including antelope, warthog, baboon and otter; give animals space and do not approach or feed them. The river and pools are scenic rest points, but assess water conditions carefully before swimming.

Trail access: Woodbush, De Hoek and Broederstroom areas, Magoebaskloof near Tzaneen, Limpopo Route information and bookings: Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail / Fagala Voet

Confirm hut availability, current official route map, road access, group requirements and the precise distance of your chosen option before travelling.

  • About the area:

Magoebaskloof lies on the forested escarpment west of Tzaneen. Its cooler, wetter mountain environment is a dramatic contrast to much of Limpopo: yellowwood-like indigenous forest, ferny stream corridors and plantation roads sit beneath mist and waterfalls. It is one of South Africa’s classic forest hiking destinations.

  • Hike Directions:

    Short two-night loops

The Woodbush and De Hoek loops are the most approachable options, each covering about 20.5 km over two nights. They link the two main huts on a circular route and are suitable for families or hikers looking for a gentler forest break.

Other short options use Dokolewa Pools, Seepsteen Mule Stables or the Waterfall Hut, with distances and difficulty increasing according to the selected combination. Confirm the current official map before selecting one, as hut access and route lines may change.

    Three- and four-night routes

Longer variants link the waterfall, Dokolewa Pools and Seepsteen sections. These cover the deeper forest and more strenuous ravine country, with daily distances that can exceed 18 km. They are better for hikers who are used to carrying food and sleeping gear over uneven, wet terrain.

    Five-night traverse options

The longest combinations make a complete forest circuit through several huts. They are genuine backpacking routes and require planning for food, water, weather and transfers between the official starting points.

    Huts, conditions and preparation

The trail is not slackpacked. Carry the food, sleeping gear, cooking equipment, lighting and personal supplies required for the full option you have booked. Forest weather is often misty or rainy in summer, but rain is possible all year and paths can be slippery. The area is described as malaria-free, though visitors should always make their own current health assessment.

Choose boots with good grip, pack a waterproof layer and dry bags, and plan for water crossings and damp conditions. Each route has a specific official start—Woodbush, De Hoek or Broederstroom—and your vehicle should be left only at the approved parking point.

Trail area: Mount Sheba, near Pilgrim’s Rest, Mpumalanga

Maps, current routes and access: Confirm directly with the trail manager before travel.

  • About the area:

Mount Sheba sits in the escarpment rainforest near Pilgrim’s Rest, where forest, sandstone outcrops and high viewpoints meet. Its marked walks combine natural features with old wagon and mining-era traces of the surrounding goldfields.

  • Hike Directions:

Obtain the current map, trail status and sign-out procedure from Mount Sheba before hiking. The source warns that rainfall and animal paths can affect route clarity; stay on the signed paths.

    • Olde Wagon: About 1.4 km return; easy historical walk.
    • Lost City: A short sandstone-formation walk reached from the entrance road; easy to moderate.
    • Sheba Lookout: About 2 km from the indicated hairpin bend; gentle, with extensive views on a clear day.
    • Sheba Trail: About 1 km through indigenous forest; may be linked to Samango for a much steeper route.
    • Samango Trail: About 3.5 km; steep in places, through forest-edge habitat.
    • Gola-Gola / Marcos Mantle link: A marked outing to Marcos Mantle Waterfall.

    What to expect

Expect slippery rock after rain, mist, rainforest shade and steep terrain on the more demanding routes. Carry water, a rain layer, footwear with grip and a basic first-aid kit. Sign out and back in as required, and turn around if trail conditions or visibility become unsafe.

The area is important habitat for forest birds and Samango monkeys. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife and do not feed animals.
