The Northern Cape is South Africa’s province of distance and contrast. The Orange River cuts through hot, dry country at Augrabies; the Kalahari brings red dunes and black-maned lions; Namaqualand transforms with seasonal flowers; and the Richtersveld holds some of southern Africa’s most rugged desert mountain scenery. Hiking here is rarely casual. It rewards people who plan for heat, water, time, road conditions and the fact that a remote reserve may be better suited to a 4x4 or guided visit than an independent walk.

Choose the Right Kind of Desert Adventure

Augrabies Falls National Park offers established walking opportunities in a dramatic river-and-gorge setting, while the Richtersveld needs far more self-reliance and local route knowledge. Kgalagadi is primarily a wildlife and wilderness-driving destination, not a place for informal hiking among predators. SA Hikes makes these distinctions deliberately: a compelling reserve page is still useful even when the honest answer is that no public trail is available.

A Living Cultural and Natural Landscape

The province’s desert country holds remarkable botanical diversity, geology, river ecosystems and deep Nama cultural heritage. Walk lightly, use authorised routes, respect community land and do not disturb rock art, plants or small creatures adapted to severe conditions. In a dry landscape, a footprint, litter or vehicle shortcut can remain visible long after a visitor has gone.

Prepare for the Real Conditions

Carry more water than you think you need, protect yourself from sun and wind, use reliable navigation and leave a conservative itinerary with someone who knows your plan. Check current permits, trail status, gate arrangements, river conditions, seasonal heat and access roads directly with the park or operator. Do not count on mobile reception or a quick resupply stop outside the larger towns.
