Mozambique

Mozambique is not primarily a hiking destination — the country's draw is its coastline, coral reefs and marine parks. The exceptions are inland: Gorongosa National Park has developed guided walking within its wildlife recovery zone, and the Chimanimani range on the Zimbabwe border offers mountain walking that few visitors reach. Hiking here requires more planning than most other regions on SA Hikes.

Mozambique's protected areas carry as much post-conflict recovery story as conservation history. Gorongosa National Park, devastated during the civil war, has become one of Africa's most closely watched wildlife recoveries. Further north, Niassa Reserve protects one of the continent's largest and least-visited wilderness areas. SA Hikes lists Mozambique reserves with information on their current status, access and the hiking available within each.
