About Zip X Trails
Zip X Trails lie in the mountains overlooking Loskop Dam, where the escarpment drops from roughly 1,450 m to 950 m above sea level. The route network offers two distinctly rugged hikes: Hels River, a demanding river descent with an optional overnight beside the Olifants River, and Kranskloof, a short but steep gorge-and-cliff route.
Both trails are for confident hikers who are comfortable with rocky ground, steep descents and unbridged natural terrain. The area is notable for cycads, geological formations, birdlife and wildlife, but its remote character calls for careful preparation.
Hike directions
Confirm current access, route conditions, guide availability and overnight arrangements with the operator before travel.
- Hels River Trail: Descend from Zip X reception to the Hels River and follow it for roughly 5.5 km to its meeting with the Olifants River. Expect extensive rock-hopping and shallow river pools; the optional two-day version uses a primitive riverside camp and returns by the same route.
- Kranskloof Trail: Climb to the cliffs above the Hels River, descend by a steep scramble where fixed ropes may be present, then follow the river into the kloof. The 4.6 km route climbs through steep rocky terrain past an old mine before returning to reception.
Do not treat historic online route descriptions as a substitute for current on-site instructions.
Important safety note
The Hels River route crosses wet and rocky terrain and reaches unfenced wilderness beside the Olifants River. The source mentions potentially dangerous wildlife in the area. This route should be attempted only with current local safety advice, appropriate experience and a conservative plan. Never enter deep pools, approach wildlife or use river water without confirming it is safe.
What to expect
Bring sturdy footwear with grip, water, food, sun and rain protection, a first-aid kit and dry-pack protection for electronics. Overnight hikers need their own sleeping gear and supplies. Be prepared for a full day of slow technical movement rather than judging the hike by distance alone.
