Blue Wildebeest Hiking Trail

About Blue Wildebeest Hiking Trail

The Blue Wildebeest Hiking Trail is a two-day base-camp hike near Badplaas in Mpumalanga. Hikers return to the same overnight base after each day on the trail, allowing them to explore the surrounding ridges and valleys without moving camp.

The route crosses grassland, climbs mountain ridges and descends into gorges, passing streams, waterfalls, rock pools, striking rock formations and older ruins. Both days reach high ground with broad views over the Badplaas valley. The landscape also supports a variety of birdlife, antelope and indigenous plant life.

Hike directions

The trail lies about 10 km outside Badplaas. Confirm the current meeting point, access directions, trail map and gate arrangements with the operator before travelling.

The standard hike is arranged as two separate day walks from a central base:

  1. Day 1: about 9.5 km, generally easy to moderate.
  2. Day 2: about 6.5 km, moderate to difficult, with more demanding terrain.

Although the distances are manageable for many regular hikers, conditions can change with weather and the second day requires confidence on rougher mountain ground. Follow the marked route and do not rely on an old online description as a substitute for current local instructions.

What to expect

Expect open grassland, ridge-top views, stream crossings or wet sections after rain, and uneven surfaces in the gorges. Carry sufficient water, sun protection, a rain layer, basic first aid and sturdy walking shoes. Pack swimwear if conditions and the operator allow safe use of the rock pools.

Weather in the mountains can change quickly. Winter brings additional fire risk, and mobile reception can be intermittent. Check the forecast and current trail conditions before setting out, and let the operator know your plans.

About the area

Badplaas sits in the Mpumalanga highlands, where grass-covered slopes give way to wooded gullies, streams and folded mountain ridges. The Blue Wildebeest trail offers a compact introduction to this varied landscape, with both panoramic viewpoints and sheltered watercourses.
