About Queen Rose Hiking Trail
Queen Rose Hiking Trail is a small network of day hikes in the Queens River area between Badplaas and Barberton. The trails start and finish at or near Matumi Bush Camp, allowing hikers to choose a gentle introductory walk or combine the longer routes over several days.
The network has three principal trails: Cupid, Matumi and OuKraal. Each has a different character, from steady dirt-road inclines to river walking, waterfall scenery and steep climbs to wide views over the Queens River landscape.
Hike directions
Confirm the current access pin, route map, trail status and road conditions with the operator before travelling. The source notes that the entry road changes with conditions and can become slippery in wet weather.
- Farm Trail: 3.6 km return, with a modest 22 m rise; a useful approach or easy walk to Matumi Bush Camp.
- Cupid Trail: 8.6 km, moderate, with steady climbing and approximately 218 m of ascent.
- Matumi Trail: 10 km, challenging, following the Queens River landscape towards Cupid Falls; approximately 241 m of ascent.
- OuKraal Trail: 9.6 km, with a steep 433 m climb and panoramic views over the Queens Nature Reserve and Cupid Falls.
The three longer routes make a natural multi-day visit, but each should be selected according to the group's fitness and current conditions.
What to expect
Expect forest and river scenery, waterfall viewpoints, dirt-road sections and steep ascents on the longer hikes. Carry water, sun protection, a rain layer, a basic first-aid kit and footwear suited to uneven ground. Cell signal is limited, so do not rely on a phone as the only form of navigation or emergency plan.
The trails cross a plantation setting where fire restrictions apply. Follow the current land-management rules and never light fires outside designated areas.
About the area
The Queens River landscape lies in the Mpumalanga escarpment country between Badplaas and Barberton. Watercourses, forest and steep slopes provide a more secluded hiking setting, with lookout points across the surrounding reserve and valley.
