Wolhuter Wilderness Trail

Mpumalanga

About Wolhuter Wilderness Trail

The Wolhuter Wilderness Trail is one of Kruger National Park's historic guided wilderness experiences. Despite the source page's Satara heading, its actual arrival and departure process is at Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp in Mpumalanga; that is the location that must be used for the SA Hikes record.

The trail explores a landscape of granite boulders, valleys and broad open ground. It is known for its botanical interest, birdlife and cultural traces in the wider area. Daily routes are determined by the rangers, allowing the group to respond to the conditions and wildlife rather than follow a public path.

Hike directions

Hikers meet at Berg-en-Dal, where the ranger team takes the group to the wilderness camp. The two walking days normally begin early, with a longer guided morning walk, a rest during the heat of the day and a shorter afternoon outing. The camp remains the base for the duration of the trail, so hikers need only carry a daypack while walking.

Route choice and daily distance vary; the rangers set the pace and track according to the group, wildlife and weather. The final morning is for returning to Berg-en-Dal rather than a further full walk.

What to expect

This is a guided big-game wilderness trail, not an independent hike. Participants must stay with the rangers, follow safety instructions immediately and respect the quiet character of the wilderness camp. Expect early starts, rugged natural ground, no ordinary electricity supply and limited connectivity.

Bring comfortable broken-in walking shoes, neutral-coloured clothing, sun and rain protection, a water bottle and a small daypack. Current packing requirements, park rules, availability and fitness screening must be confirmed directly with SANParks or the operator before travel.

About the area

The Wolhuter trail area combines granite formations, valleys and bushveld around the south-western part of Kruger National Park. This creates a different walking experience from the flatter savannah areas: more varied ground, broad rock features and long views across the landscape.
