Bushman Wilderness Trail

Mpumalanga

About Bushman Wilderness Trail

The Bushman Wilderness Trail is a guided Kruger walking trail based in the park's south-western granite country. Its deep valleys, rocky outcrops and animal paths make it a very different experience from the open plains of central Kruger.

The area has both natural and cultural interest. Rangers may interpret rock-art and archaeological sites as part of the trail programme, together with the plants, birds and animals of this higher, more rugged landscape. Access to cultural sites is guided and should remain respectful; hikers must not treat them as self-guided attractions.

Hike directions

Hikers begin the trail process at Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp and travel with the ranger team to the wilderness basecamp. The two full days use early morning and later afternoon guided walks, returning to the same basic camp for rest and overnighting.

Routes are selected by the rangers according to weather, wildlife and the group. Elephant and rhino paths may make some natural lines of travel easier, but the trail remains fully guided and no one should walk away from the group or attempt to follow a previous route alone.

What to expect

Expect broken ground, granite rock, steepish natural terrain, early starts and a remote camp atmosphere with limited modern services. Pack worn-in boots, neutral-coloured clothing, sun and rain protection, a headlamp and water capacity suited to a warm day in the veld.

The trail is operated under wilderness-trail safety rules. Follow ranger instructions straight away, keep noise and light low in camp, and confirm current fitness requirements, access arrangements and gear requirements directly with SANParks or the operator before booking.

About the area

The south-western Kruger landscape around Berg-en-Dal combines rocky kopjes, quiet valleys and botanically rich high ground. Wildlife can be encountered at close range under the ranger team's direction, while high viewpoints give the walk a strong sense of scale.
