About Elangeni Hiking Trail

Elangeni is a two-day circular trail through the mountains and ravines around Waterval Onder. It follows the Elands River, climbs to escarpment viewpoints, crosses mountain streams and reaches waterfalls, indigenous forest and a historic stone-circle and petroglyph site.

The route is well marked, but hikers should be prepared for a demanding first climb and for hot summer conditions. Slackpacking is sometimes possible, but must be confirmed with the operator as conditions allow.

Hike directions

  1. Day 1 — 14 km: Follow the Elands River before a strenuous mountain ascent. Continue along the escarpment, crossing streams and descending to the overnight stop beside a mountain stream.
  2. Day 2 — 11 km: Climb briefly to the plateau, visit two waterfalls through indigenous forest, then return on gentler ground via the heritage site to the base camp.

What to expect

Start early in hot weather and carry sufficient water for the first day, as the source describes no water point along its opening 14 km. Wear reliable footwear, bring sun and rain protection, food, a first-aid kit and a headlamp. Respect the petroglyph and stone-circle site: do not touch, mark or remove anything.

Dogs may be permitted under the operator's current rules, but this should not be assumed at import stage; verify conditions and leash requirements directly.
