About Kranskloof Hiking Trail
Kranskloof is a base-camp hiking destination in the Komati Gorge Nature Reserve near Carolina. The two trails combine Highveld ridges, kloofs, streams, waterfalls and river pools, with a strong chance of seeing antelope and a rich mix of bush and grassland birdlife.
The shorter Kranskloof Trail is only 7 km, but its sustained climbing, steep terrain and red-cliff sections make it a properly physical hike. The longer Komati route has gentler gradients in places and adds open ridges, river scenery and BaKoni settlement remains.
Hike directions
Obtain the current route map, access instructions and any weather-related alternatives from the operator before travel.
- Kranskloof Trail — 7 km: From base camp, follow the river downstream, climb steeply from the valley to the krans, descend through a small gorge, then continue beside the river and rock pools before two final forested climbs return to camp.
- Komati Trail — reported as about 15 km: Start near the dam below camp and follow stream and ridge sections towards the Komati River, passing grassland, wildlife habitat and BaKoni cultural remains before returning via an uphill section and the marked path to camp.
The source page contains conflicting distance information for the Komati Trail. Keep its length as “about 15 km — confirm current distance” until the operator verifies it.
Heritage and safety
The Komati route passes BaKoni archaeological features. Respect all heritage sites: do not touch, climb on, mark or remove anything. The Kranskloof Trail has steep climbs, uneven rock and exposed cliff-side terrain, so it is unsuitable for hikers unsteady on their feet.
Heavy rain can affect crossings when dam water is released. Confirm the current route and any bridge or diversion status with the operator; never enter flooded sections. Weather changes rapidly on the Highveld, so carry warm and waterproof layers.
What to expect
Carry water, sun protection, a rain layer, tick protection, a first-aid kit and shoes with good grip. The reserve supports wildlife including antelope, warthog, baboon and otter; give animals space and do not approach or feed them. The river and pools are scenic rest points, but assess water conditions carefully before swimming.
