Uitsoek is a forest and escarpment trail network near Sudwala Caves in Mpumalanga. It combines plantation tracks, indigenous scrub and riverine forest, waterfalls, gorge sections and the Houtbosloop Valley.
There are two moderate 11 km day routes and a demanding two-day Houtbosloop option. All start from Uitsoek Hut, allowing hikers to choose a day hike or a more committed overnight traverse to Lisabon Hut.

- Bakkrans Day Route: 11 km, moderately difficult. Crosses pine plantation and indigenous scrub forest in the gorges, passing Bakkrans Waterfall and tributaries of the Houtbosloop.
- Beestekraalspruit Day Route: 11 km, moderately difficult. Climbs to the Beestekraalspruit cliffs, descends into riverine forest and follows the stream for about 4 km, using wooden bridges for multiple crossings.
- Houtbosloop two-day route: 28 km, very difficult. Day one covers 14.5 km from Uitsoek to Lisabon Hut; day two returns 13.5 km through the Houtbosloop Valley to Uitsoek.
What to expect
The Houtbosloop route is a serious mountain hike with long days and variable terrain. Carry adequate water, food, warm and waterproof layers, lighting and first-aid supplies. Wear footwear suited to wet roots, rocky tracks and repeated stream crossings.
Forestry roads and trails can change with operations or weather, so the current official map and local trail advice take priority over old online directions.
