Kaapschehoop Hiking Trail crosses the high, mist-prone escarpment around the historic De Kaap goldfields. It links indigenous forest, fynbos, rock outcrops, streams, waterfalls and old mining landscapes, with two-night itineraries between Kaapschehoop Hut and Barretts Coaches.
The trail is especially rewarding for birders: the region supports more than 200 recorded species, including the endangered blue swallow. Wild horses, antelope and a wide range of smaller mammals may also be encountered.

What to expect
Carry suitable clothing for sudden mist, rain and cold evenings, plus water, food, a light source and a first-aid kit. The route includes uneven rock, forest paths and escarpment edges. Stay on the marked trail and respect historic mining and cemetery sites; do not remove artefacts or disturb wildlife.
About the area
Kaapschehoop developed during the 1880s gold rush and remains set among distinctive sandstone formations on the escarpment. Its plateau, forests and wetlands form a transition between the Highveld and Lowveld, creating strong botanical and birding variety.
