About Bundu Backpackers Hiking Trail
The Bundu Backpackers Hiking Trail is a short, self-supported overnight adventure in the Bermanzi landscape between Machadodorp and Badplaas. Hikers carry their own small tents and camp beside the Bankspruit in indigenous woodland, with no developed facilities at the overnight site.
It is designed for people who enjoy rougher, more independent hiking rather than a conventional hut trail. The reward is a night in the gorge beside the stream, with the next day's route continuing along the Bankspruit towards Uitkoms (Bridal) Falls before the climb back to the starting area.
Hike directions
Confirm the current booking, start point, route description and access arrangements with the operator before travelling.
- Day 1: Begin from the Bermanzi side and hike for roughly five to six hours with your tent and overnight supplies down into the Bankspruit gorge. Camp in the designated primitive site in the indigenous woodland beside the stream.
- Day 2: Follow the Bankspruit for approximately four hours towards Uitkoms (Bridal) Falls, then take the uphill route back to the trail's starting area.
The route is strenuous, particularly when carrying a loaded pack. Do not assume that an older online description represents the current trail alignment or water conditions.
What to expect
This is a genuine backcountry-style overnight: bring a small tent, sleeping gear, food, water treatment or sufficient drinking water, lighting, weather protection and a first-aid kit. The remote camp has no developed services, so hikers must leave no trace and carry out all waste.
Expect a long descent into the gorge, walking beside the river, uneven natural terrain and a sustained climb out on day two. The stream and pools are scenic features, but conditions and water levels must be assessed on the day. Do not attempt unsafe crossings or enter the route in flood conditions.
About the area
Bermanzi lies in the Mpumalanga highlands between Machadodorp and Badplaas. The Bankspruit cuts through indigenous woodland and rocky gorge terrain, while nearby waterfalls and escarpment slopes create a more rugged experience than a typical base-camp trail.
