About Oom Paul Hiking Trail

The Oom Paul Hiking Trail crosses the valley between the Bermanzi side of the Bank Spruit and the Mount Komati escarpment. It is a short but demanding point-to-point hike: steep descents and climbs, indigenous forest, river scenery and a sandstone maze make it more technical than the distance suggests.

The hike can be walked from Bermanzi towards Aloe Kaya, or in the reverse direction. An overnight is built into the trip so hikers can begin from one side, stay near the starting point on the first evening, and then hike through to the other side. Treat this as an experienced-hiker route, not a casual day walk.

Hike directions

Confirm the current booking, start point, trail map and official route markings with the operator before travelling. The source route describes two directions:

  • Bermanzi to Aloe Kaya: Descend from the Bermanzi side through forest towards the Bank Spruit, then climb through the sandstone landscape to Aloe Kaya. The published distance is about 10.5 km.
  • Aloe Kaya to Bermanzi: Start near Aloe Kaya, follow the escarpment with views over the Skoonspruit and Komati valleys, pass the waterfall area and continue via the river and forest back to Bermanzi. The published distance is about 10 km.

The page refers to numbered poles, painted footmarks and Oom Paul direction signs. These are useful only as on-the-ground markers; hikers should use the current operator-issued navigation information rather than relying on historic pole numbers or an old online track.

Important access and safety note

The published description reports a damaged bridge near the Bank Spruit and a potentially hazardous river crossing, especially when the spruit is in flood. Do not use a damaged bridge or attempt a flooded crossing. Confirm the current safe crossing arrangement and whether the route is open with the operator before departure. If the crossing cannot be made safely, turn back or follow the operator's alternative instruction.

What to expect

Expect steep ground, rocky sections, forest shade, river scenery, sandstone formations and changing mountain weather. Wear proper hiking footwear and carry water, food, weather protection, a headlamp and a basic first-aid kit. Keep to the marked trail, avoid disturbing the natural and heritage landscape, and travel with a group whose fitness suits the route.
