The route is marked with yellow footprints and poles. Always use the current SANParks map and briefing material, as route management, detours and water availability can change.
Day 1 — approximately 13 km / allow about 6 hours: Start from the main gate and pass the Smitswinkel Bay viewpoint. The trail works around the base of Paulsberg to Kanonkop, then continues via the Buffelsfontein Visitor Centre and the higher ground around Rooikrans. From the Rooikrans parking area, follow the marked path to the overnight huts. A Cape Point return detour is possible only for hikers with sufficient daylight, energy and favourable conditions.
Day 2 — approximately 20.5 km / allow up to 10 hours: Leave the huts early and descend to Pegram's Point. The route follows the coast towards Platboom, then continues past Gifkommetjie and Hoek van Bobbejaan before turning inland through the permit-controlled Blaaubergvlei section. From Sirkelsvlei, cross the central plain and climb Rooihoogte before descending to the main gate.
What to expect
The terrain ranges from firm paths to sand, fynbos tracks, rocky slopes and coastal sections. Pack for sun, wind, rain and cooler evening conditions, and carry enough food, water, a torch, personal first-aid supplies and reliable navigation. Refilling points and hut facilities must be confirmed before departure rather than assumed.
Baboons occur in the park. Keep food secure, give all wildlife space and never feed animals. Snakes are also part of the fynbos environment; stay on the route, remain observant and do not interfere with them. The trail crosses sensitive vegetation and heritage landscapes, so take out all litter and leave plants, shells and artefacts untouched.
Camps
Overnight accommodation is in the park's hiking huts, which provide basic sleeping and cooking facilities. Hikers need to bring their own sleeping gear and personal supplies. The available huts, keys, baggage-transfer options and booking conditions are controlled by the park and can change; confirm them directly with SANParks before planning the trip.
No private vehicle access is permitted to the overnight huts. If a bag-transfer service is required, arrange it only through the current authorised park process.
