McGregor / Die Galg to Greyton — about 14 km: From the McGregor side, start near Die Galg south of town and cross the mountains towards Greyton. The route passes watercourses, mountain fynbos and the Oakes Falls pools. Organise transport before committing to the one-way traverse.
Greyton to McGregor / Die Galg — about 14 km: From the Greyton side, the first section follows a jeep track uphill towards the viewpoint before the trail enters the mountain route. The walk can be done in either direction; choose the direction and logistics to suit the group and current conditions.
Two-day out-and-back — about 28 km: Walk to a safe turnaround or arrange an overnight at one end, then return on the same route the next day. Do not camp on the trail itself unless the responsible authority has explicitly authorised it.
What to expect
This is a reasonably strenuous mountain hike. In summer, heat and dry conditions are significant; in winter, rain, cold and high-water crossings can make the route hazardous. Carry adequate water, food, sun protection, warm and waterproof layers, navigation, a first-aid kit and a charged phone. Do not hike alone.
Oakes Falls and the pools are places to pause rather than an invitation to take risks. Avoid slippery rock, fast water and cliff edges, and never rely on stream water without current local advice and suitable treatment.
Permits and trail support
A valid permit is required. Book ahead and carry the permit on the trail. Group limits, dog restrictions, fire rules, access arrangements and trail status must be confirmed with CapeNature at the time of booking.
The nearby Die Galg accommodation is a practical start/end option only. It should not be imported as a separate hiking article unless its own defined route network is later assessed as a candidate.
