Hike Directions

Embark on an unforgettable six-day journey through the heart of the Tsitsikamma National Park, a trek that unveils a remarkable tapestry of landscapes, from serene coastal forests to majestic mountain peaks.

Day 1: Nature’s Valley to Kalander Hut (3.4 km, approx. 1.3 hours)

The adventure begins with an easy stroll along the eastern bank of the Groot River lagoon. Here, the air is filled with the symphony of birdlife and the gentle murmur of the Indian Ocean. The trail weaves through tall, dry indigenous coastal forest, offering a tranquil introduction to the park's natural beauty, culminating at the Kalander Hut.

Day 2: Kalander Hut to Bloukrans Hut (14.7 km, approx. 7 hours)

Day two presents a more challenging ascent, rewarding hikers with panoramic vistas from Apiesrug. The changing vegetation signals the arrival of the plateau, abundant with fynbos. The majority of the day's hike, however, guides you through afromontane forest, venturing inland towards the Tsitsikamma Mountains' foothills. Bloukrans Hut, perched on a cliff edge, offers stunning views of the river gorges and distant peaks. A coca-cola colored waterfall cascades nearby, inviting you to enjoy its private rock pools.

Day 3: Bloukrans Hut to Keurbos Hut (13.4 km, approx. 6 hours)

This day delves deep into the Tsitsikamma Mountains and its dense forests, creating a sense of remote isolation. The historical Buffelsbos, the Bloukrans River crossing at Waterwitelsgat, and the natural jacuzzis at the Twin Tubs are highlights. The journey concludes at Keurbos Hut, nestled in a lush, wetter forest where the plaintive call of the narina trogon may be heard.

Day 4: Keurbos Hut to Heuningbos Hut (13.4 km, approx. 6 hours)

Day four traverses diverse habitats, featuring river crossings and the ascent of Rushes Pass, which offers majestic views. Untouched indigenous forests reveal themselves in remote mountain regions. The path descends to follow the Elandsbos River and leads to Heuningbos Hut, preceded by crossings of the Kleinbos River and the promise of a refreshing swim in a nearby pool.

Day 5: Heuningbos Hut to Sleepkloof Hut (14.2 km, approx. 7 hours)

The longest day of the trail involves negotiating two saddles, showcasing pristine mountain fynbos and diverse flora. Splendid Pass and Nademaalsnek offer spectacular views. Sleepkloof Hut, nestled in a forested gorge, provides magnificent views of the Tsitsikamma mountains, a testament to the woodcutter era.

Day 6: Sleepkloof Hut to Paul Sauer Bridge/Storms River Village (3.2 km, approx. 1 hour)

The final day offers a choice: a gentle two-kilometer descent to Paul Sauer Bridge, or a slightly longer walk through the tall indigenous Plaatbos Forest to Storms River Village. Both options provide a peaceful conclusion to this remarkable Tsitsikamma adventure.
