Days 1–2 — Lekkerwater: The itinerary can begin with an optional approximately 6 km walk from the Lekkerwater parking area through fynbos to the coastal base. Guided marine and nature walks, or self-guided exploration where permitted, make up the next day.
Day 3 — Lekkerwater to Koppie Alleen: The central walking day is about 15 km and usually takes six to nine hours with stops. It follows the coast along beaches, limestone platforms, gullies, pools, caves and cliffs towards the Koppie Alleen end of the Whale Trail. Transfer then connects hikers to the De Hoop Collection side of the reserve.
Day 4 — De Hoop Vlei and western reserve: A 5 km guided walk around the vlei leads towards Melkkamer, followed by a boat transfer and a further 7–8 km through cliff-edge, vlei-side and open fynbos terrain.
Day 5 — Flatrock and Potberg: A short guided Flatrock walk of about 4 km gives panoramic views over the vlei. The itinerary can also include a guided Potberg vulture-colony walk before the return transfer to the Lekkerwater parking area.

What to expect
Pack a small day pack, water bottle, wide-brimmed hat, sun protection, closed walking shoes, warm layers, simple first-aid supplies and binoculars. Reef shoes can be useful on coastal exploration but do not replace secure walking footwear. The long third day is exposed and requires enough water, careful pacing and awareness of the sea.
Rock pools, intertidal areas and coastal vegetation are sensitive. Do not climb on fragile formations, collect shells or disturb marine life. During whale season, observe from a distance; a wildlife encounter is never guaranteed.
Accommodation and trail support
The source describes off-grid lodge and reserve accommodation, meals, baggage transfer and return transport as elements of the supported itinerary. These make the walk a slackpacking experience, but accommodation is not the subject of this SA Hikes article.
