The journey begins at Potberg, where vehicles are left, and concludes at Koppie Alleen, from which a shuttle service returns hikers to their starting point. The Whale Trail provides a "slack-packing" experience, allowing hikers to carry only a day pack, as extra luggage is transported daily to the next hut in provided 70-liter containers. Each group, limited to six people, can transport up to 14 containers, or seven per group of six, with the option of using them as cooler boxes, which CapeNature can supply upon request.
Daily Itinerary
Day 1: Potberg to Cupidoskraal (15.5km, Moderate to Strenuous, approximately 8 hours)
This is the most challenging segment, requiring an early start. The trail ascends to the summit of Potberg, offering panoramic views of Swellendam, Cape Infanta, and Cape Agulhas, and the opportunity to spot rare Cape vultures. The trail concludes with a descent to Cupidoskraal.
Day 2: Cupidoskraal to Noetsie (15.2km, Moderate, approximately 8 hours)
The route follows Potberg's crest through mountain fynbos, featuring stunning views of the Indian Ocean and Breede River. The trail transitions to limestone hills with unique fynbos before descending to Noetsie Bay.
Day 3: Noetsie to Hamerkop (8.5km, Moderate, approximately 6 hours, 4 hours of walking)
This shorter distance allows for a relaxed start and ample time to explore the coastline. Stilgat offers excellent snorkeling and swimming opportunities, and whale-watching points dot the route to Hamerkop's sandy beach.
Day 4: Hamerkop to Vaalkrans (10.5km, Moderate, approximately 6 hours)
The beach walk rewards hikers with spectacular views and turquoise rock pools. Hikers are advised to avoid sensitive calcrete formations and observe seabirds, while respecting the privacy of Lekkerwater Lodge guests.
Day 5: Vaalkrans to Koppie Alleen (7km, Easy, approximately 6 hours, 2 hours of walking)
This final, short hike allows for leisure time to enjoy the scenery, observe whales and dolphins, snorkel, or swim in the Hippo Pools before reaching the Koppie Alleen parking area.
Accommodation and Facilities
Each of the five overnight huts accommodates up to 12 people, with three dorm rooms, each sleeping four, primarily with bunk beds and utilitarian foam mattresses. Hikers must bring their own pillows and sleeping bags.
The huts are fully equipped, with dishwashing liquid and toilet paper provided. Hikers should bring their own toilet paper and a small spade for the trail.
Hikers are requested to vacate the huts by 09:00 for cleaning and luggage transport.
All doors and windows must be hooked when opened and closed upon departure due to baboons. Mattresses and crockery/cutlery should remain inside the huts. The overnight huts are located at the foot of the Potberg mountains, and perched on sea cliffs.
Hikers are liable for any damage caused to reserve property due to negligence.
The trail also gives hikers the chance to explore the pristine southeastern coastline, which is one of the largest Marine Protected Areas in Africa.
