The four-day route moves through the Witzenberg Valley on a mixture of sandy and gravel roads, fynbos tracks, mountain foothills, orchards, wine farms and historical sites. Daily lines may change from one edition to the next, so no fixed turn-by-turn route should be published from an event page.
Expect long days of five to seven hours on foot. The total elevation gain is not described as technical mountain climbing, but the combination of distance, uneven ground and four successive walking days requires strong conditioning and well-tested footwear.
Use the official event briefing, transport plan and current route material. Do not attempt to recreate an annual route independently across farm and private land.
What to expect
Spring weather in Tulbagh can vary from rain and cold conditions to early summer heat. Bring a 25–35 litre day pack with rain cover, reliable hiking shoes and socks, rain and sun protection, warm layers, a headlamp, water bottle, personal toiletries and a personal first-aid kit. Prepare feet well in advance and manage blisters early.
Water points and event support should be treated as organiser-provided services, not as permanent public infrastructure. Every hiker remains responsible for their own health, hydration and suitability for the distance.
Accommodation and trail support
The historic event format has used a central Tulbagh accommodation base, with meals, daily transfers and other event support included. These arrangements are part of the fundraiser and may differ each year. They are not separate accommodation listings for SA Hikes.
Confirm the next event's base, current support, medical plan, fundraising beneficiaries, requirements and cancellation terms directly with the organisers before making travel plans.
