Fountain Shack is an overnight hiking destination on Robberg Peninsula, reached only on foot from the reserve parking area. The wooden hikers' shack is a practical base for experiencing Robberg after the day visitors have gone: ocean views, rugged coast, beach walking and the peninsula's big skies are the real draw.
It is not a conventional accommodation listing. The hike in, the self-carry and the exposed nature of the peninsula are integral to the stay, so it belongs as one focused overnight-hike article.
Hike directions
Parking area to Fountain Shack — about two hours: Follow the reserve's marked seal route from the car park along boardwalk, then turn at the Fountain Shack sign. The boardwalk gives way to rock rambling, a beach section of about 600 metres and a final climb to the shack.
Safer Witsand alternative: A route through Witsand takes longer but avoids some of the more exposed rock sections. Use the current reserve map and signs to decide; never take an unmarked shortcut across coastal rocks.
Return: Retrace the access route, or—where conditions, permits and fitness allow—continue on the Robberg Point circuit back to the car park. The circuit should be treated as a separate route decision, not assumed as an easy extension after an overnight stay.
Do not walk to the shack in rain, mist, darkness, strong wind or unsafe sea conditions. The rocks are uneven and can be slippery; sheer drops and fast-changing weather are real hazards.
What to expect
Carry all personal equipment and enough drinking water. Essential items include footwear with grip, a torch, sleeping bag, warm and windproof layers, sun protection, first aid, food, insect repellent and any cooking supplies required by the current hut rules. Pack light enough to move safely over rock, but do not under-pack for exposure.
Swimming, snorkelling and diving are not automatically safe because of strong currents. Follow reserve advice, remain within your ability and never enter the sea merely because the water looks calm.
Camps and trail support
Fountain Shack is the overnight destination. Its equipment, water, power, bedding, access hours and cleaning arrangements can change and must be confirmed directly with CapeNature when reserving. Take all waste out, use water sparingly and leave the hut secure and ready for the next hikers.
The reserve's current rules govern fires, fuel, fishing, alcohol, pets, gate hours and whether any portage help is available. Do not include old operational details in the final imported article.

Robberg is a protected coastal peninsula where rock platforms, beaches, cliffs and marine habitat meet. Its scenery is dramatic precisely because it is exposed to weather and sea, so careful, low-impact travel matters.
Stay on authorised paths, do not disturb plants or animals, and respect every marine-protected-area rule.
