About Montagu Camino

The Montagu Camino is a six-day, point-to-point walk through the Klein Karoo's open game-belt landscape. Starting near the R318 and finishing in Montagu, it crosses gravel roads, guest farms and private nature reserves with wide views, dryland vegetation and night skies as its defining features.

This is a walking journey rather than a farm-stay collection. Daily luggage transfer and tented camps make the long linear route practical, while the actual trail remains the focus: six days of sustained walking through sparsely settled Karoo country.

Hike directions

R318 to Driekuilen Nature Reserve — about 20.5 km: Start near Sandvlei Guest Farm on the R318 and walk into the first reserve landscape.

Driekuilen to Gecko Rock — 16 km: Continue on open Klein Karoo roads towards Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve.

Gecko Rock to Machaseh — 24 km: The longest day crosses broad, exposed terrain to the Machaseh camp area.

Machaseh to Welverdiend — 16.6 km: Follow the route through the private-farm landscape towards Welverdiend.

Welverdiend to Ouberg — 14 km: A shorter day reaches Ouberg Private Nature Reserve between the mountains.

Ouberg to Montagu — 20 km: Complete the journey towards Montagu, with the final operational finish and vehicle return confirmed by the current organiser.

The route uses private land and active farms. Do not attempt it independently or assume public access; follow the current authorised itinerary and stay on the agreed paths and roads.

What to expect

Expect long days in an exposed semi-arid landscape. The walking itself is mostly on gravel roads, but distance, heat, wind, limited shade and consecutive days demand sound fitness. Take sun protection, a hat, water capacity, a warm layer for evenings, rain protection, comfortable road-walking footwear, personal medication and a first-aid kit.

Wildlife sightings are possible on the reserve sections but are never guaranteed. Give animals space, do not approach or feed them, and follow every guide and landowner instruction.

Camps and trail support

The standard concept is a fully supported slackpacking route with luggage moved between overnight sites. Tented accommodation, meals, showers and guide support are booking arrangements which can change; they should not be copied into SA Hikes as fixed promises.

The source lists budget, standard and semi-luxury formats. Keep these as current booking options under the one Montagu Camino article, not as separate hike listings.

About the area

The Klein Karoo is a dry inland landscape of low mountains, scrub, wide gravel roads and large skies. The route connects private conservation and farm country on the approach to Montagu, making it a quieter contrast to the Cape's better-known mountain paths.

Its stillness is part of its character, but it also increases the need for preparation. Heat, weather, vehicles, wildlife and remoteness require conservative decisions throughout the walk.
