About
The Kammanassie Camino is a guided Little Karoo slackpacking experience based near De Rust, between the Swartberg and Outeniqua ranges. It uses a private game reserve, private farmland and the Kammanassie Nature Reserve to reach three distinct mountain routes, returning to the same bush-camp base after each day.
The route is not a town-to-town pilgrimage despite its Camino name. It is a supported hiking destination with a strong route network: a long jeep-track climb through reserve country, a shorter walk past old dam ruins, and a higher final route to a protea-forest lookout. That makes it suitable for SA Hikes as a defined hiking product rather than as an accommodation listing.
Hike directions
Zebra Climb — approximately 22 km: The longest day follows winding jeep track through Kammanassie Blue Private Game Reserve. Expect varied Karoo and mountain scenery, a sustained walking day and the possibility of observing wildlife from a safe distance.
Route of Ruins — approximately 13.5 km: This shorter route starts with a transfer from base camp and explores the hillside remains of old dams and other structures. Their history should be treated with care: the origins are not confirmed, so do not present speculation as fact or disturb the ruins.
The Lookout — approximately 17.5 km: The final route crosses reserve land, private farmland and conservation areas to a protea-forest lookout. It uses a steadily rising jeep track with rocky but non-technical ground and wide views towards the Swartberg and Kammanassie ranges. The return section is normally supported by a vehicle transfer.
All routes are guided. Access is by permission only, and route lines, transfer points and conservation restrictions must be taken from the current operator briefing.
What to expect
Terrain includes gravel roads, jeep tracks, singletrack and rocky ground. Pack sturdy hiking shoes, a small day pack, enough water, sun protection, warm layers, a torch, personal medication, a basic first-aid kit and insect repellent. Mobile reception can be limited once away from camp.
The landscape supports free-roaming wildlife and sensitive vegetation. Remain with the group, stay on the official trail, keep noise low, do not approach animals and never remove plants, rocks or heritage material. A whistle or equivalent signalling device should be carried as required by the operator.
Accommodation and trail support
The route uses a bush-camp base at Kammanassie Blue Private Game Reserve. It is a logistical base for the walking programme, with shared accommodation, meals and transfers commonly part of the package. It should not be presented as a separate SA Hikes accommodation listing.
Confirm the current support arrangement directly with the operator. Package inclusions, dietary support, camp facilities, departure dates, transport and group rules can change.
About the area
The Kammanassie range rises between the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains in the Little Karoo. It is a meeting point of dry Karoo vegetation, mountain slopes, fynbos elements and wide high-country views. The region is associated with the Kammanassie Blue Butterfly and other specialist biodiversity, so careful low-impact hiking is especially important.
De Rust lies nearby and is a useful practical base for supplies and onward travel, but the hiking itself takes place within controlled reserve, farm and conservation land.
