About Portland Camino
About
The Portland Camino is a five-day guided walking journey through the forests, mining history, valleys and coastline around Knysna. Based in Rheenendal, it uses a series of daily excursions rather than a continuous hut-to-hut traverse, linking the Millwood gold-mining landscape, Knysna Forest, beach terrain and farm paths.
The route takes inspiration from the contemplative pace of a Camino, but its identity is firmly local: yellowwood forest, the literary landscape associated with *Circles in the Forest*, early gold-rush history and the working heritage of the Garden Route. It is a defined hiking product with accommodation support, rather than a hotel stay with incidental walks.
Hike directions
Arrival walk — approximately 6 km: An easy introductory walk around the Rheenendal farm and furrow landscape.
Millwood day — approximately 12 km: A guided walk through the old Millwood mining area. This route explores the forested historical landscape and includes a transfer to the starting point.
Forest and coast day — approximately 16 km: The longest and most demanding stage, combining forest, broader landscape and beach walking. It is the core full-day hike of the itinerary.
Forest history day — approximately 9.5 km: A moderate route centred on the Knysna Forest and the region's literary and cultural history.
Departure walk — approximately 3 km: A short final nature walk around the base property.
Daily trails can be adjusted for weather, conservation restrictions and group ability. Follow the current guide instructions and do not enter SANParks or private land outside the authorised programme.
What to expect
Pack sturdy walking shoes, a hat, sun protection, insect repellent, a small day pack, water, snacks, spare socks and weather layers. Forest paths can be damp and slippery after rain, while the coastal stage may be exposed to wind and sun.
The route crosses protected and private landscapes. Keep to the guide's line, do not use drones, do not bring pets on the trail and respect all flora, wildlife and historical remnants. A hiking pole is optional but can help on uneven ground.
Accommodation and trail support
The usual format uses a four-night base at Portland Manor, with guiding, meals and support included in the itinerary. This is trail logistics, not a separate SA Hikes accommodation listing.
Confirm the current departure dates, guide-to-hiker ratio, transfers, conservation permissions, food arrangements and weather contingency with the operator before booking.
About the area
Rheenendal sits inland of Knysna, close to the forests and historical mining country of Millwood. The wider Garden Route landscape moves quickly from indigenous forest to rolling valleys and coast, creating a varied walking experience within short travelling distances.
The old mining sites, forest tracks and literary associations give the route a strong sense of history. They should be explored respectfully: leave all objects in place and follow access guidance around heritage remains.
