About
The Penguin Trail is a guided, three-day slackpacking hike based in Betty's Bay. It combines the Hangklip coast, Kogelberg mountain country and the shoreline to Stony Point Penguin Colony, creating a compact but varied introduction to the Kogelberg Biosphere.
The trail is more than a penguin visit. Its three walking days cross coastal rock, beach, fynbos, yellowwood forest, waterfall country and a marine-reserve shoreline. It is also community-led: the published trail supports the Hangklip Community Care Centre, though the precise fundraising arrangements should be confirmed for the current season.
Hike directions
Hangklip Peninsula to Silversands Beach — 13 km: Start below Hangklip Mountain and pass the lighthouse, coastal midden landscape and fish-trap area before traversing the peninsula. Expect beach walking and some rock scrambling around Sea Farm Peninsula before finishing at Silversands.
Kogelberg Oudebosch to Harold Porter — 10 km: Begin in the Kogelberg Biosphere and climb the Oudebosch River Valley through yellowwood forest. A rocky ascent reaches the saddle, then the route continues via Leopard's Kloof and descends by zig-zag path into Harold Porter National Botanical Garden. This is the most demanding day, with scrambling and some exposure.
Jock's Bay to Stony Point — 5 km: Follow the coast from Jock's Bay via Dawid's Kraal and Main Beach, then around Stony Point Bay to the penguin colony. The river outlet may require a safe wade or a route adjustment depending on conditions.
The trail is timed around low tide for the coastal days. Follow the guide's current route and never attempt to cross river mouths, scramble coastal rocks or enter sensitive heritage areas independently.
What to expect
Bring stable walking shoes, thick socks, a day pack, water, rain and wind protection, sun protection, a hat, personal medication and a basic first-aid kit. A hiking pole, swimwear and binoculars can be useful. The weather can change quickly on the Kogelberg coast, especially in spring.
Keep a respectful distance from penguins, shore birds and all other wildlife. Middens, fish traps and coastal heritage features are protected; look, learn and leave them exactly as you find them. Tides dictate safety on the beach sections, so guide decisions take priority over the published plan.

The standard format uses a Betty's Bay guesthouse base, meals, transfers and a qualified guide. These are logistical supports for the hiking route, not separate accommodation content for SA Hikes.

About the area
Betty's Bay lies in the Kogelberg Biosphere, a centre of Cape Floral Region biodiversity where mountain fynbos meets one of the Western Cape's most dramatic coastlines. Hangklip, the Kogelberg forests and Stony Point each show a different face of this landscape.
Stony Point is a managed African penguin colony. Visitors should use the official access facilities and follow all manager instructions; viewing wildlife responsibly is part of the trail's value.
