About Karoo Erdvark Hiking Trail

About

Karoo Erdvark is a genuine hiking destination rather than a farm-stay listing. The Rooiheuwel network offers short marked day routes, a four-day daisy-chain option from Boplaas, and defined five- and seven-day point-to-point itineraries across the Nuweveld Mountains and Great Karoo landscape.

The landscape combines rocky terrain, koppies, dry valleys, fountains, river crossings and expansive semi-desert views. Hikers can carry their own equipment or arrange luggage transport where that service is currently available.

Hike directions

Short routes range from 2 km Knoffelfontein and 2.3–2.6 km Dripval up to the 17.4–18.9 km Tafelkop–Grootdroom variants. Other marked choices include Donkerhoekfontein (4.2 km), Doringleegte (5.1 km), Bulhoek (5.83 km), Rivier (6.2 km), Piekniekval (6.3 km), Donkerhoek (8.34 km), Rooiberg (8.45 or 12.79 km) and Aar (8.9 km).

The Boplaas-based circular sequence uses Tafelkop (13.31 km or a 10.1 km shortcut), Aar (8.9 km), Piekniekval (6.24 km) and Bulhoek (5.83 km) over one to four nights.

The five-day route is Boplaas–Middelplaas (12.9 km), Middelplaas–Arendsnes (9.8 km), Arendsnes–Rietvlei (15.44 km), Rietvlei–Grootdroom (15.3 km), then Grootdroom–Boplaas (12.8 or 14.3 km). The seven-day option adds the 8.3 km Donkerhoek circular walk and the 8.9 km Aar loop, either before or after the main route.

What to expect

The network covers a wide range of effort levels, but the longer lines are rocky, exposed and more demanding than the distances alone suggest. The Karoo can be very hot in summer and cold in winter; plan water, sun protection, wind layers and start times accordingly.

Carry enough water, navigation supplied for the selected route, a headlamp, basic first aid and blister care, sun protection, a warm layer and comfortable footwear with good support. Anyone on the multi-day routes should know the current water, camp and emergency arrangements before departure.

Camps and route bases

The network uses Boplaas, Grootdroom, Bloubos and other farm bases. The five-day itinerary includes a tented night at Arendsnes, an overnight in the old Rietvlei school building and stays at mountain/farm accommodation. These are trail logistics, not a separate accommodation article; exact facilities and whether tents or gear are required must be confirmed at booking.

About the area

The Nuweveld edge of the Great Karoo is quiet, dry and highly variable in light and temperature. The trail network relies on managed farm access, so stay on marked routes, close gates as found, leave no litter and avoid disturbing stock or wildlife. Do not assume water from seasonal streams or fountains is potable without current advice.
