About The Crater Camino

The Crater Camino is a five-day slackpacking walk through the Vredefort Dome, the vast landscape shaped by an ancient meteorite impact. The route follows farm paths, bushveld ridges, river country and historic sites around the Vaal River, with luggage transport and accommodation arranged between the daily walks.

The Camino is designed as a slower, place-based journey rather than a race. Walkers pass wild olive forest, old quarry ground, Boer War remains, a small historic church and high viewpoints over the rolling Dome. It is a moderate trail, but five days on uneven ground still calls for sound walking fitness and prepared feet.

Hike directions

Day 1 – Stonehenge River Lodge to Wild Olive Guest Farm (9 km)

The journey begins beside the Vaal River, then heads into the rock formations of the Dome. The route passes the World Heritage quarry area and reaches the wild olive forest at the first overnight stop.

Day 2 – Wild Olive to Paradyskloof (16 km)

The trail climbs gradually through bushveld hills, passing Boer War trenches and a small church before descending into the Paradyskloof valley. Look out for the wider Dome views that explain the shape and scale of this old landscape.

Day 3 – Flexible Vaal River stage

This day has alternative formats. Hikers may combine a short walk of about 6.4 km with a still-water row of roughly 6 km, or choose a longer walking route of around 23 km. Confirm the selected option and its exact sequence before the hike.

Day 4 – Paradyskloof to Sunnyside, then towards Twane Bush Camp (17.5 km listed)

After breakfast near Venterskroon, the route continues through valley trails towards the river and Sunnyside. The programme then moves deeper into the crater landscape, with rockier paths and views from the higher ridges before the next overnight.

Day 5 – Twane Bush Camp to Hadeda Creek (17 km)

The final stage leads through wide plains and quiet valleys back towards the Vaal River, finishing at Hadeda Creek. It is a gentler end to a route built around geology, open space and reflection.

What to expect

The trail is slackpacked, so carry a comfortable daypack with 2–3 litres of water capacity, sun protection, rain layer, snacks, personal medication and a light warm layer. Trekking poles can help on rocky or uneven slopes, while a swimsuit is useful for river-based sections where conditions allow.

Overnights, main meals, lunch packs and luggage transfers form part of the organised trail experience. They make this a hiking destination rather than a standalone accommodation listing. Still, confirm the final itinerary, individual distance options and what is included before booking.

About the area

The Vredefort Dome is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, formed by a meteorite impact roughly two billion years ago. The impact shaped the ring of hills, folds and river corridors that make the area unusually rich for geology-minded walkers. Its mix of bushveld, riverine woodland, rocky ridges and working farms also supports varied birdlife and plains game.
