The Sediba Hiking Trail is located near the tranquil village of Memel in the northeastern Free State. The name "Memel" translates to "surrounded by water," while "Sediba" means "fountain water," hinting at the region's abundant water sources.

The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, with a variety of bird species to spot.

Hike Directions

The Sediba Hiking Trail offers two stunning circular routes that start and end at the base camp:

Day 1: The 10.5km Trail

Embark on a challenging hike through diverse landscapes, including rolling grasslands, rocky cliffs, and lush river valleys. As you ascend the trail, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of distant mountains and the quaint village of Memel. The trail is marked with white footprints and features thrilling challenges like ladders, bridges, and narrow passages. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as rhebuck, duiker, and steenbok.

Day 2: The 6km Trail

This shorter route takes you along the ridge, offering panoramic views of Seekoeivlei and the winding Klip River. The trail is marked with yellow footprints and features numerous ladders and bridges that traverse rocky terrain and water streams. The Ou Hout Trail, named after the dominant tree species, provides a unique hiking experience.

Birdwatching Paradise

The grassland and Seekoeivlei wetlands are home to an impressive variety of bird species, including 230 recorded species and 15 Red Data species, such as the Crowned, Blue, and Wattled Crane, as well as the Rudds and Bota's Lark.
