About the Holhoek Hiking Trail
Holhoek is a farm-destination hiking trail near Paul Roux in the Eastern Free State. The route is a figure of eight through mountain valleys, streams, caves and rocky slopes, with self-catering huts at the farm base. It is exactly the kind of destination hike that belongs in SA Hikes alongside Imla: the farm is the starting point, overnight base and setting for the trail itself.
The route’s standout feature is its cultural landscape. Several caves hold rock art or evidence of earlier settlement, and old structures appear on the hiking line. Natural highlights include a cave waterfall and pool, while bridges and ladders add a more adventurous element to the walk.
Hike directions
Day 1 – Main loop (13 km)
The longer section uses mountain paths and valleys to reach a series of caves. One is near a stream and contains San rock art; another has evidence of Iron Age farming. The route also passes historic shelters and older farm ruins. Bridges over streams and ladders on steeper ground require steady balance.
Day 2 – Shorter loop (7 km)
The second section completes the figure of eight. It leads to another cave associated with local war-time history and offers more of the Free State mountain scenery before returning to the farm base.
Accommodation and preparation
The on-site self-catering base includes thatched huts and a larger house, with beds, mattresses, hot showers, toilets, kitchen facilities and a lapa/braai area. This accommodation is integral to the trail, so it can be described as route logistics rather than treated as a separate accommodation listing.
Bring your own bedding, food, utensils, firewood and toilet paper unless the operator confirms otherwise. High-clearance vehicles are advisable on the approach road. The ladders and bridges can be uncomfortable for people with a fear of heights, and care is essential in wet weather.
About the area
Paul Roux lies on the N5 corridor between Bloemfontein and Durban, in the rolling, sandstone country of the Eastern Free State. Holhoek is reached by gravel road from the town and is within reach of Clarens, but feels quieter and more remote once you reach the farm gate.
