About Skeurkrans Hiking Trail
Skeurkrans is a Waterberg basecamp hike near Naboomspruit. Two marked circular routes leave from the same camp: a longer 9 km Leopard Trail and a shorter 6 km Bobbejaan Trail. Together they make a relaxed hiking weekend with steep enough sections and mountain views to keep experienced walkers interested.
This is a farm-destination hike. The small A-frame hut camp, communal lapa and self-catering facilities form the base for the trails; they should be described as part of the hiking logistics, not made into a competing accommodation listing.
Hike directions
Leopard Trail – 9 km
Follow leopard-paw markers through thick bushveld and past a stream. The route then climbs steeply to a plateau below a distinctive koppie, where the first wide views open out. It continues towards Hanglip, crosses a saddle and reaches the top of the krans before dropping through a kloof with rock pools.
The final section crosses indigenous bush, climbs once more to a plateau and descends back to camp. The route is well marked, but the repeated steep sections call for a steady pace and good footwear.
Bobbejaan Trail – about 6 km
The shorter trail follows baboon-footprint markers through indigenous bush. It includes one steep climb to the mountain top, making it an easy-going second day for hikers who want views without another long route.
Basecamp and preparation
The camp is about 200 m from the parking area, up a rocky, winding path, so pack to carry your own food and gear. It has A-frame huts with bunk beds and mattresses, a communal kitchen and lapa, hot showers and flush toilets. Bring your own cutlery, crockery, food and other personal camping supplies unless the operator confirms updated equipment.
A high-clearance vehicle is sensible on the gravel approach. During the rainy season, the Waterberg vegetation and streams are at their best, but paths may be wet and slippery.
About the area
The Waterberg is an ancient mountain region of bushveld, rock ridges, seasonal streams and wide views. Skeurkrans offers a compact way to experience it, close enough to Pretoria for a weekend yet far enough from town to feel like a real bush getaway.
