The Kransberg Hiking Trail is a guided slackpacking journey through the Waterberg around Thabazimbi. It joins mountain passes, jeep tracks, single-track sections, private reserves and conservation-focused overnight stops. Luggage is transported between the bases, so hikers walk with a daypack.
The source describes two main itinerary families. The longer route continues from the Indaka/Kransberg area via Shakawe and Grootspruit to Dabchick Wildlife Reserve; the shorter option includes the Klipbokkie single-track loop before finishing at Shakawe. Both are organised departures rather than a permanently marked public trail, so SA Hikes should explain the character of the route without publishing a fixed calendar.
Hike directions
Indaka to Kransberg – about 11–13 km
The first walking day follows the steep gravel of Bakker’s Pass into the Kransberg area. Short local walks and waterholes may be available after arrival, depending on the programme.
Kransberg to Shakawe – 15 km
This is the signature mountain section: a mostly level jeep-track walk along the Kransberg range, with small streams, Waterberg views and a lookout near a dam. The route can include a historic stop near the Grobler museum site before reaching Shakawe.
Leopard itinerary: Klipbokkie single-track option
The shorter itinerary includes a circular mountain walk near Klipbokkie, descending to waterholes before returning to the lodge base. The exact distance varies in the source itinerary; confirm the current guided route.
Lion itinerary: Rankins Pass and Dabchick section
The longer variation continues down Rankins/Trichardt’s Pass to Grootspruit, then adds a guided single-track hike in Dabchick Wildlife Reserve. The total route is around 50 km across four hiking days.
What to expect
Most of the trail is hard gravel road or jeep track, so cushioned walking shoes can be more comfortable than stiff boots, although good grip remains important. Pack a daypack with water, sun protection, warm layers, rain protection and personal medication. Bushveld temperatures are variable: hot afternoons, late summer rain and cold mountain winter conditions are all possible.
