The Mathikithi Wilderness Trail is a small-group guided hike in the south-central Kruger National Park. It uses a rustic wilderness camp near the N'wanetsi stream, but the heart of the experience is walking through rocky bushveld with professional trail rangers rather than travelling the park by vehicle.
The terrain includes sandstone outcrops, viewpoints and broad wildlife paths. Elephants and buffalo are part of the landscape, which makes this a fully guided wilderness trail and never a route for independent hiking.
Hike directions
Hikers meet at Satara for the trail departure process, then travel with the ranger team to the wilderness camp. The two middle days follow the usual wilderness-trail rhythm: an early guided walk, a rest during the warmer middle of the day and a shorter afternoon outing before returning to camp.

The trail uses basic huts with shared facilities and low-impact power, not a standard rest-camp setup. Prepare for early starts, long walking days, dust or heat, cool mornings and very limited connectivity. Bring already-worn-in boots, neutral-coloured walking clothing, rain and sun protection, a headlamp and a reliable water-carrying system.
