The Wild Coast Waterfall Bluff Hike is a five-day guided traverse through the heart of Pondoland. It starts near Port Edward and links river mouths, beaches, cliffs and coastal villages before reaching Waterfall Bluff, Cathedral Rock and the Tearoom area.
This is a supported Wild Coast route with local overnights and two meals a day, allowing hikers to focus on the coastal walking. The trail is moderate in distance but remains a real multi-day hike: the terrain is uneven, the coast can be exposed, and the route passes through remote areas where weather and trail conditions can change plans.
Hike directions
Day 1 – Port Edward to Mnyameni (15 km)
Meet near the Wild Coast Sun in Port Edward and walk south along the coast to the Mnyameni area for the first overnight.
Day 2 – Mnyameni to Mtentu (15 km)
Continue through the Pondoland coast to the Mtentu area. The day is typical of the route: a changing mix of natural shoreline, river country and rural coastal landscape.
Day 3 – Mtentu to Port Msikaba (13 km)
The third stage travels south to Port Msikaba, a quieter portion of the Wild Coast where hikers experience the scale of the coast away from larger towns.
Day 4 – Port Msikaba to Port Grosvenor (11 km)
This shorter day moves towards Port Grosvenor. Treat it as a chance to hike steadily, take in the scenery and arrive with enough time to enjoy the overnight stop.
Day 5 – Waterfall Bluff, Cathedral Rock and Tearoom (11 km)
The concluding stage visits the signature sights around Waterfall Bluff and Cathedral Rock. The final details of access, river conditions and the day’s line should always be confirmed with the guide.
What to expect
Bring well-used trail shoes, a daypack, rain and sun protection, swimming clothes, headlamp, personal medication and snacks. Accommodation and the main meals are normally part of the guided trail, but hikers should still carry the water and personal supplies they need through the day.
The Wild Coast is beautiful precisely because it is less developed. Be prepared for patchy mobile signal, changing weather and practical adjustments from the guides. Respect local communities, stay with the group and do not cross rivers or approach cliff edges without the guide’s direction.

Pondoland is one of South Africa’s most evocative coastal landscapes, known for its green headlands, river mouths, deep gorges and long open beaches. Waterfall Bluff is especially memorable because the waterfall drops directly into the sea, a rare feature on the South African coastline.
