About Strandloper Hiking Trail

The Strandloper Hiking Trail is a four-day backpacking route along the Eastern Cape coast from Kei Mouth to Gonubie. It is a proper coastal traverse rather than a beach stroll: hikers move over sand, rocky shelves, boulders, shingle, grass paths and stretches of deep sand, with estuaries and river crossings shaping the rhythm of the walk.

The trail links familiar coastal places—Morgan Bay, Double Mouth, Haga Haga, Chintsa and Yellow Sands—with wilder stretches of shoreline. It is unescorted, so the group needs to be self-sufficient, comfortable carrying personal gear and willing to adapt plans to tide, weather and the condition of the river crossings.

Overnights range from a basic log cabin to bunk rooms and a simple hut. There is no single standard of comfort, which is part of the route’s character. The reward is four days close to the sea, tidal pools, white sand and the constantly changing edge between coast and grassland.

Hike directions

The hike begins with a morning trail briefing at the Enviro Centre in Kei Mouth. The standard direction is south-west to Gonubie, where hikers leave the supplied keys at the designated finish point and arrange onward transport.

Day 1 – Kei Mouth to Double Mouth (13 km)

The opening stage follows beaches and grass paths via Morgan Bay to Double Mouth. The overnight is a basic log cabin, with ablutions available at the nearby caravan park. This is a useful day to settle into the coastal terrain and establish a safe pack-carrying pace.

Day 2 – Double Mouth to Haga Haga (9 km)

The route begins on rockier ground to the Quko River, then alternates between sand, goat paths, rocky sections and beaches on the way to Haga Haga. Accommodation is in simple bunk rooms at the hotel.

Day 3 – Haga Haga to Beacon Valley (22 km)

This is the longest stage. The first 8 km includes rocky shelf and shingle beach walking, followed by a longer sandy section towards Beacon Valley near Chintsa. The overnight hut is basic, with rainwater, a cold wash area, long-drop toilet and braai facilities, so carry the personal gear and supplies you need.

Day 4 – Beacon Valley to Gonubie (15 km)

The final day combines sand, rock and pebble beaches, first reaching the Kwelerha River and then continuing to the Gonubie River. Refreshment options can be limited or seasonal, so never rely on finding food en route.

River crossings and safety

River crossings are a defining part of the Strandloper. The number and depth depend on season, rain and tide; expect at least several crossings and potentially more. Never attempt a crossing at a river mouth, and use closed water shoes or old takkies rather than hiking boots. Keep your clothes, food, electronics and sleeping gear inside properly sealed waterproof bags.

Before departure, obtain the current crossing guidance, tide information and emergency procedures from the trail manager. A survival bag and a length of light rope for securing or floating packs may be useful. This is not a trail for hikers who are uncomfortable with wet feet, rough footing or changing coastal conditions.

What to pack

Carry a sturdy backpack, broken-in hiking boots, rain and wind protection, sun protection, warm evening layers, sleeping bag, swimwear, towel, personal medication, basic first aid and a headlamp. You will also need your own food plan, drinking water capacity, cooking and eating kit where required, and toilet paper.

Villages or hotels can offer occasional food, supplies and charging opportunities, but these should be treated as a bonus rather than the basis of your plan. Pack enough food and water for the next section before leaving each overnight stop.

About the area

This part of the Wild Coast is defined by estuaries, long sandy reaches and weathered rocky shore. Kei Mouth marks the northern trailhead, while Gonubie lies near East London at the southern end. Between them, small coastal settlements offer brief contact with services, but the trail’s strongest moments are the quieter stretches where the coast feels expansive and untamed.
