About the Karoo 3 Peaks Challenge
The Karoo 3 Peaks Challenge is a guided three-summit hiking break in the Sneeuberg around Nieu-Bethesda and Graaff-Reinet. It combines three distinct high Karoo mountains—Compassberg, Nardousberg and Toorberg—with village and farm hospitality between the climbs.
This is a farm-and-town destination hike in the same broad family as SA Hikes’ guest-farm hikes: the accommodation and meals support the walking experience, but the three mountain days are the core of the trip. All three summits rise above 2,000 m and demand fitness, suitable mountain gear and comfort with exposed terrain.
Hike directions
Day 1 – Arrival in Nieu-Bethesda
Arrive in Nieu-Bethesda, settle into the selected accommodation and use the afternoon to explore the village. The evening briefing prepares the group for the three summit days.
Day 2 – Compassberg (2,504 m)
Compassberg is the highest summit in the Karoo. The climb is short in distance but steep, with a reported ascent of about 900 m over roughly 6 km. The summit provides far-reaching views across the Great Karoo, but weather can be sharp and changeable at this altitude.
Day 3 – Nardousberg (2,420 m)
Nardousberg is the longest hike of the three, using a jeep track approach to the summit. The source lists a distance of 24.27 km and a significant vertical figure; confirm the current route profile and start point with the guide before travelling.
Day 4 – Toorberg (2,106 m)
The final summit is Toorberg, a roughly 10.21 km hike with an indicated ascent of about 595 m. After the climb, the group returns for a farm lunch before the departure arrangements.
What to expect
Each peak involves a full mountain day. Bring a reliable daypack, plenty of water capacity, energy food, waterproof footwear, sun protection, warm layers and a windproof outer layer. Trekking poles are useful on steep ascents and descents. Do not rely on village weather forecasts alone: the summits are exposed and can be considerably colder or windier.
This is guided hiking, but it is not a substitute for personal conditioning. The combination of altitude, sustained climbing and three successive days makes it best for hikers with existing hill fitness.
About the area
The Sneeuberg rises above the eastern Karoo in a landscape of huge skies, dry grassland and isolated peaks. Nieu-Bethesda brings a creative village atmosphere, while Graaff-Reinet provides a historic base at the edge of the Camdeboo region. Together they make this one of the more distinctive ways to experience the high Karoo on foot.
