About the Wild Coast Amble
The Wild Coast Amble is a hotel-to-hotel guided slackpacking walk along the southern Wild Coast. It links beaches, cliff tops, rocky headlands, river mouths and small coastal settlements over five walking days, while luggage is moved ahead and the group sleeps in established coastal accommodation.
The route starts in the Trennery’s or Seagulls area and finishes near the Kwelera River, at either Areena Riverside Resort or Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve depending on the selected final-day option. It is a hike with a cultural dimension: local Xhosa guides accompany the opening part of the route and share knowledge of the coast and its communities.
This suits hikers who want the scenery and distance of a multi-day Wild Coast route without carrying camping equipment. The terrain is generally moderate but still includes sand, rocks, cliffs and a tide-sensitive river crossing, so it is not a casual resort walk.
Hike directions
Day 1 – Arrival and local excursion
The first day is used to transfer from East London to the northern trail base, crossing the Kei River by ferry where conditions allow. A short guided excursion introduces the coast before the first overnight.
Day 2 – Kei River area to Morgan Bay (14 km)
Walk to the Kei River with a community guide, then continue through Kei Mouth to Morgan Bay. The route combines coastal walking with history linked to the former Cape Colony boundary.
Day 3 – Morgan Bay to Haga Haga (14 km)
This stage follows cliff tops, beaches and rockier shore. One river may involve a wade at low tide or a short swim at higher water, so conditions must be assessed on the day. The route also passes beachcombing country where marine debris and historical fragments sometimes appear.
Day 4 – Haga Haga to Chintsa area (16 km)
Expect a varied coastal day with beach walking, small headlands, estuaries and rock pools. The trail finishes at the overnight accommodation in the Chintsa East area.
Day 5 – Choose the coastal or game-reserve finish
The coastal option is about 10 km on mostly sandy beach, followed by a short paddle up the Kwelera River to Areena Riverside Resort.
The game option begins with a transfer to Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve, then follows a guided reserve route of about 13 km to tented camp. It combines walking with a game drive and is a genuine destination-hike variation rather than nearby accommodation.
Day 6 – Return transfer
After breakfast, the package returns hikers to East London.
What to expect
The Amble is guided and supported, but coastal weather, sea conditions and ferry operations can still influence transfers and daily plans. Pack comfortable walking footwear suited to beach and rock, sun and rain protection, a swimming layer, daypack, water capacity and any personal medication. Ask about current luggage-transfer limits, meals, guide arrangements and the availability of your preferred finish option before booking.
About the area
The southern Wild Coast holds a pleasing mix of wide sandy bays, sandstone cliffs, estuaries and long-established coastal villages. It is less remote than some northern Wild Coast hikes but retains a strong sense of space between settlements. The trail provides a gradual walk through this coastal landscape rather than a single out-and-back destination.
