Aasvoëlbad is a small hiking destination on the northern Magaliesberg near Brits, within the Magaliesberg Biosphere. Two intermediate routes climb through the farm landscape to views and rock pools, while a separate labyrinth walk offers a slow, contemplative alternative.
The farm is named for Cape griffon vultures associated with the mountain slopes. Game such as kudu, zebra, impala, wildebeest and other antelope may be encountered during a hike.
Hike directions
The two marked hiking routes are 4.5 km and 6.5 km respectively. Both include a worthwhile climb, natural views and rock-pool scenery. Confirm the current start point, trail map and gate access with the operator before travelling.
The optional labyrinth walk is not a substitute for the hiking routes; it can be described separately within the listing as a quiet, self-guided walking experience.
What to expect
Bring water, sun protection, footwear suited to uneven terrain and a basic first-aid kit. Keep gates as you find them, follow the farm’s access rules and give wildlife plenty of space. There is no formal picnic area, so plan accordingly and follow the operator’s current rules about food and alcohol.
About the area
The farm lies on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg, close to the Cradle of Humankind and other North West attractions. The biosphere setting combines bushveld wildlife with mountain ridges and vulture habitat.
