The Okavango River Core of Bwabwata

Mahango Game Reserve is the name many visitors still use for the Mahango Core Area of Bwabwata National Park, south of Divundu beside the Okavango River. The distinction matters: Mahango was incorporated into Bwabwata when the national park was gazetted in 2007, but it remains a useful visitor name for one of the park’s most accessible river-and-floodplain wildlife areas. Here, dense riverine vegetation, baobabs, broad floodplains and Kalahari woodland create a striking contrast with Namibia’s better-known dry landscapes.

River Wildlife and Exceptional Antelope

Mahango is valued for elephant and buffalo as well as a strong range of antelope. Sable, roan, tsessebe, red lechwe and sitatunga are among the species associated with the Okavango and its floodplain habitats, while hippo and crocodile make the river a place to observe from a safe distance. Lions, leopard and hyaena are possible but never promised. Keep vehicle doors closed near water, do not approach riverbanks on foot and make wildlife space part of the day rather than a restriction on it.

Birding Where Water Changes Everything

The river corridor and wetland edge make Mahango a rich birding stop, with more than 300 bird species recorded. Reeds, riverine forest and open floodplain can produce a very different list from the dry woodland beyond the water. Take binoculars and give yourself time at one or two suitable viewing areas rather than driving constantly. The reward may be a fishing owl call, a waterbird in the shallows or a small movement in the reeds, not only a large mammal on an open plain.

Vehicle Choice and Route Discipline

Namibia Tourism Board visitor guidance describes two game-viewing roads and recommends 4x4 access, with at least two vehicles travelling together. Conditions can change with rain, sand and river levels, so check current route and vehicle advice before leaving Divundu. This is not a free-walking hiking area: large animals, water hazards and sensitive habitat mean that any walk should be guided and formally arranged. Stay on permitted roads and use an authorised operator for boat or guided activities.

Pair Mahango with the Wider Kavango

Mahango is close to Popa Falls and forms part of a broader north-east itinerary linking river scenery, cultural experiences and protected areas. Plan fuel, water, accommodation and daylight before entering, and make sure a visit supports the people and conservation systems that maintain this landscape. The core attraction is the Okavango itself: a living river corridor on its journey toward Botswana’s delta.
