Suikerbosrand is one of the relatively few Gauteng nature reserves where hikers can undertake a proper overnight hiking trip.
Unlike the Cheetah and Bokmakierie day trails, the overnight hiking system is not one fixed route. Hikers plan their journey through the reserve using the hiking-trail network and overnight huts, allowing the distance and number of days to be adjusted to the group.
The remote hiking huts accommodate groups of up to 10 people. Hikers should be self-sufficient and carry their own food, equipment and other supplies rather than expecting serviced accommodation along the route.
Because the huts are remote, overnight hiking is best undertaken as a group. Confirm the condition and availability of the huts, the route to be followed, current booking requirements and any trail closures before departure.
Suikerbosrand’s terrain includes grassland valleys and repeated climbs onto the reserve’s ridges. Routes can therefore accumulate considerably more climbing than the relatively modest Highveld elevations might suggest.
There are no drinking-water points along the hiking trails, so water planning is particularly important for an overnight itinerary. Do not assume that natural water sources will be available or suitable for drinking.
Much of the hiking network is exposed or only partially shaded. Start early, carry sun protection and be prepared for rapidly changing Highveld weather.
Late winter and early spring can also coincide with controlled veld-burning operations. Check that the intended route and huts are accessible before travelling.
