About Bokmakierie Trail - Suikerbosrand

The Bokmakierie Trail is Suikerbosrand's principal day hike and offers a considerably tougher outing than the shorter Cheetah Trail. Repeated ascents and descents cross rocky Highveld ridges and valleys, with broad views across the reserve and surrounding Gauteng landscape.

Despite Suikerbosrand’s proximity to Johannesburg, the route contains repeated climbing and descending. Allow enough time rather than judging the hike on distance alone.

More than 270 bird species have been recorded in the reserve. Kudu, springbok and blesbok may also be seen, although hikers may encounter tracks and other signs of game more often than the animals themselves.

The trail is only partially shaded and should preferably be started early on hot, clear days. There are no water points along the route, so carry all required drinking water from the start.

Controlled veld burns sometimes take place before the summer rains in late winter or early spring. Confirm that the trail is open before travelling during this period.

Hike Directions

The Bokmakierie Trail is Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve’s main day hike and offers a much more substantial outing than the shorter Cheetah Trail. Hikers can choose between an approximately 10 km route and the longer 11.5 km option.

Ignore old signs or information referring to a 17 km Bokmakierie Trail. The route was redesigned and the longer current option is approximately 11.5 km.

The trail is circular and does not have to be walked in a prescribed direction. One documented option is to walk clockwise, which produces some noticeably steeper descents than climbs.

From the start, the route follows a river uphill towards the top of the ridge. A bench at the ridge provides a good viewpoint before the trail drops into the next valley. The route then continues through groves of sugarbush with broad views across the surrounding hills.

Farther along, trail markers give hikers the choice of completing the shorter 10 km circuit or continuing onto the 11.5 km option. This junction makes a useful halfway rest or lunch stop before deciding whether to add the longer section.

About the area

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve lies south-east of Johannesburg near Heidelberg. The Suikerbos Ridge runs east to west through the reserve and rises to approximately 1,918 metres above sea level, creating surprisingly substantial hills for a Gauteng nature reserve.

The landscape includes open grassland, wetland areas, rocky ridges and groves of indigenous sugarbush. Suikerbosrand is also archaeologically important, with evidence of a large pre-colonial Tswana settlement discovered within the reserve.
