Hike Directions

Start from the Lion’s Head trailhead and parking area on Signal Hill Road, off Kloof Nek Road. Pass through the gate and follow the broad track as it climbs gradually around the mountain.

The path spirals around Lion’s Head, progressively gaining height and opening views over Cape Town, Table Mountain and the Atlantic coast. Higher up, the route becomes steeper and includes rock steps and short sections where chains and metal aids may be used.

Continue following the established summit path to the top of Lion’s Head and return by the same main route. Take particular care on the upper rocky sections, especially in wet weather, strong wind or poor visibility.

About the area

Lion’s Head rises between Table Mountain and Signal Hill above central Cape Town. Its position gives hikers unusually wide views over the City Bowl, Table Mountain, the Atlantic seaboard and the Cape Peninsula.

The mountain forms part of the Cape Peninsula’s fynbos landscape and is one of Cape Town’s most popular short mountain hikes. Although close to the city, the upper slopes are steep and exposed and weather can change quickly.
