Day 1 — Flatrock to Tierhoek: Approximately 5.5–6.5 km. Meet the guide at the reserve, then walk down through fynbos at Flatrock to the Tierhoek area, where broad views open over the vlei. Transfer to the overnight base follows.
Day 2 — Melkkamer and Opstal: Approximately 15 km in total. Walk around 8 km to historic Melkkamer, then use a guided boat transfer across the vlei before a further walk of roughly 7 km through fynbos and plains around Opstal.
Day 3 — Koppie Alleen, Wyoming and Potberg: Approximately 9 km in total. A transfer reaches the marine-protected coast at Koppie Alleen. The coastal stage crosses dunes towards Wyoming along a section associated with the last part of the Whale Trail, followed by an inland Potberg walk to the vulture-viewing area.
Day 4 — Opstal to Tierhoek: Approximately 8 km. A final reserve walk is followed by transfer back to the entrance and hikers' vehicles.
All daily starts, transfers and route variants are managed by the guide and reserve operator. Follow the current briefing, particularly where tides, marine access, wildlife movements or management activities affect the day plan.
What to expect
Bring a small day pack, water bottle, sun protection, warm and windproof layers, closed walking shoes, swimwear if desired, basic first aid and binoculars. Trail conditions include fynbos paths, dunes, open plains and coastal ground. The group moves between areas by road and boat, so this is not a continuous through-hike.
De Hoop's wildlife and coastal habitats are a major part of the experience. Keep a respectful distance from animals, never approach birds or nests, stay with the guide in sensitive areas and leave all plants, shells, rocks and heritage material where they are found.
Accommodation and trail support
The walking itinerary uses a catered reserve-based stay, generally at De Mond Villa or Melkkamer Homestead. That accommodation supports the hiking experience but should not be listed as separate lodging in this SA Hikes article.
