Silence on the Edge of the Tankwa

Tankwa Karoo National Park is a vast, dry landscape between the Roggeveld Escarpment, the Cederberg and the Tankwa Desert. It is a park for space, geology and hard-earned quiet rather than a place with a long list of managed hikes. The apparent emptiness is its great strength: succulent Karoo vegetation, wide plains, weathered cliffs, tortoises, birds and astonishing night skies reveal themselves slowly.

Drive for the Landscape, Not for Speed

Most exploration happens by vehicle on designated roads and tracks. SANParks identifies the Leeuberg and Watervlei 4x4 trails as routes that require skill, while other roads can still change quickly after rain. Use a suitable vehicle, carry adequate water, fuel, food, puncture and recovery equipment, and do not leave the road. Distances that look short on a map can take much longer than expected.

Camping under Proper Desert Conditions

Formal and informal campsites give visitors access to the night sky, but self-sufficiency is essential. Some sites have no water or ablutions, and temperatures can swing from very hot days to cold winter nights. A headlamp, shade, sun protection and warm clothing are basic equipment, not extras. Use designated overnight places only and observe seasonal travel-time restrictions inside the park.

Walking and Wildlife

Tankwa should not be presented as a network of established public hiking trails. Short walks around camps, viewpoints and interpretation stops can be rewarding, but guests should ask reception what is currently permitted and safe. Birding, game watching, mountain biking where allowed, scenic viewpoints and stargazing are the stronger visitor experiences listed by SANParks.

Plan Before the Signal Disappears

Check weather, road conditions, accommodation, gate arrangements and fire restrictions before you leave the last reliable town. Tankwa is wonderful precisely because it is remote; travel in a way that keeps it that way.
