Upington’s Granite Koppie Reserve
Spitskop Nature Reserve is a small game reserve north of Upington, named for the granite koppie that rises above its dry Kalahari surroundings. It is an easy place to add nature, a short climb and a quiet overnight stop to an Orange River or Green Kalahari journey without pretending it is a vast wilderness area.
A Short Climb with a Big View
A brief climb to the top of Spitskop Hill gives a wide view over the plains and offers a useful orientation to the region’s open scale. Wear shoes with grip, carry water, avoid the hottest part of the day and stay alert for snakes and uneven rock. The reserve has promoted hikers and cyclists, but obtain current guidance on permitted routes and day access before arriving.
Small-Reserve Wildlife
Springbok, gemsbok, eland, hartebeest, zebra, ostrich and smaller mammals have all been recorded or promoted at Spitskop. Camels have an unusual local history too: they were bred for mounted police patrols in this arid region and may still be seen. Observe all animals from a respectful distance; a small reserve does not make wildlife tame.
Birds, Reptiles and Desert Detail
Sandgrouse, shrikes, raptors and open-country birds add interest around the koppie, while tortoises and reptiles are part of the landscape rather than an invitation to handle them. Slow walking and binoculars make the reserve more rewarding than a hurried circuit by car.

Chalets, caravan sites and camping have been offered at Spitskop, but facilities and day-visitor policies can change. Confirm booking, gate, activity and road information directly before travelling from Upington, particularly in very hot weather or after rain.
