Community, Cliffs and Hot Water

Riemvasmaak Community Conservancy lies between the Orange River and the dry Molopo River, west of Kakamas, in a powerful landscape of granite cliffs, mountain desert and naturally heated pools. It is a community tourism destination with a history of displacement and return, so a visit is not only about scenery: it also supports a place whose people continue to shape how the land is shared and experienced.

Hot Springs in a Harsh Landscape

The hot springs are the obvious centre of a first visit. Warm water below high rock walls can feel almost improbable after the dry approach, but it is still an outdoor, remote setting. Confirm current opening arrangements, pool access, camping or accommodation options, road conditions and any fire rules before travelling. Bring drinking water, food, shade and recovery equipment suitable for your vehicle.

Hiking, Riding and Riding Responsibly

The local tourism information describes hiking trails and mountain-bike opportunities, but visitors should not assume every route is an unsigned, free-to-use trail. Ask the conservancy about current routes, permits, guides, distances and seasonal conditions. Granite terrain, heat and isolation make a guided outing or clear local briefing a good choice, especially for visitors new to the area.

Respect the Community and the Desert

Stay on authorised tracks, take rubbish out, do not disturb rock surfaces or cultural sites, and ask before photographing people or private spaces. Cell reception, supplies and emergency assistance can be limited. The most enjoyable trip is the one that arrives prepared and leaves the fragile desert as it found it.

Riemvasmaak combines naturally with Augrabies, Kakamas and other Orange River attractions, but do not attempt to squeeze it into an over-ambitious day. Give the pools, cliffs and walking opportunities enough time to be more than a roadside photograph.
